Excellent well researched information on a controversial topic. Weil considers medicine from a logical balanced viewpoint. Not only a traditionally trained M.D., he has experienced and/or examined other forms of healing and therapy and presents his conclusions without bias.
Hi –
I wanted to read this book to learn more about health it (eat this, not that; exercise at half speed for a half hour, etc.). This sort of information is not there, really. However, it contains a great exploration of alternative approaches to good health, beyond pills and surgery. Weil is an MD, but he is also well versed in many other ways to heal and live well. There is a lot of medical history here. So, this book is not exactly what I expected but it taught me about various theories and practices. He’s very knowledgeable and also a very good writer. I truly enjoyed reading it. Thanks!

I’ve used many books over the years, but this one is by far the most useful. If you have a health condition it’s covered and Dr. Weil tells you exactly how to eat and what to supplement to cure it. He talks in terms of himself often. He is compassionate. He speaks of his own anxieties so to tell you that it’s okay for you to have them too. The most important thing I learned from him is how to breath. I know that sounds funny because most people don’t regard their breathing at all. But the fact is that people are anxious. They don’t breath fully. It will impact your health negativity. Dr. Weil teaches you every aspect about your breath. It’s amazing how improved my life is because of it. He focuses on stress reduction, which is probably the biggest destructor of health. Modern medicine masks symptoms. Here you learn that you can only cure yourself through diet (along with stress reduction and even exercise). Dr. Weil teaches you exactly how to cure yourself. He focuses on every aspect of Health and Healing in this book. It’s getting old. I sure hope there is a revision coming. Brilliant – the answer to natural health and healing without Big Pharma as the only option. Total common sense and essential info.

I have been a large fan of Dr. Andrew Weil for years, although my wife and I didn’t read this wonderful book until recently.
In my opinion, he is a visionary among his peers. As Deepak Chopra says, he is … “a pioneer in the medicine of the future”.
My wife (who is an RN) and I are both “passionate” about our health – especially about “prevention” and “holistic healing” (despite Dr. Weil not being a proponent of the word “holistic” in this context :>). We greatly respect alternative practitioners and we believe in WELLNESS, through the power of exercise – good nutrition – safe, natural supplementation – and wise lifestyle choices – as opposed to treating SICKNESS (from medications) through expensive and often toxic DRUGS – with their inevitable side effects. Accordingly, we loved this book.
Dr. Weil presents a balanced look at both “conventional” medicine and “alternative” modalities. He leads the reader to look at his/her own role in healing and in making appropriate choices in our OWN health care – it is up to each of US to decide what we, as persons seeking wellness, will need in terms of treatment and what we choose to place our belief in.
Dr Weil explores the role of FAITH – and the patient’s “confidence” in their treatment – as positive inducators for the “outcome” of the treatment. I see this as being in the same realm as that of the great Dr. Bernie Siegel’s best-seller book … “Love, Medicine and Miracles” (the mind-body-spirit connection).
OUR HEALTH – Our health and well-being is our single most ‘precious ASSET’. Nothing in the universe is more important. Nothing.
As a Financial Advisor and Business Consultant (primarily to health professionals) – I’m used to talking about investments / net worth / wealth, etc. But the raw truth is this: we can have all the riches and prosperity in the world – all the financial success on the planet – but without our HEALTH – these resources don’t really matter – we will not be able to truly enjoy such rewards.
We personally believe that we can only achieve “complete” WELLNESS when our physical, emotional, spiritual and financial well-being are in ‘harmony’ – enabling us to achieve our life purposes … wellness in mind, body, spirit – and finances. We believe that vibrant health, financial abundance, time freedom and peace of mind – IN BALANCE – TOGETHER = our total WELL-BEING.
Dr. Weil, trained as an M.D., believes that conventional medicine is great at handling trauma and sudden, life-threatening conditions, like heart attacks, but it’s less good at dealing with chronic conditions like arthritis, diabetes, obesity. We agree completely.
Dr. Andrew Weil’s book … “Health And Healing” is without question, a 5-STAR candidate.
Sincerely,
Peter Arnold, CLU, CFC / Founder
