This is an amazing product.. runs very cool and quiet and is rated at 2.5 million hours for average failure. The 8T of storage will last me a very long time indeed. Be aware the sector size on this drive is not 512 bytes but rather 4096 (4K) and is a 512e (512 emulated), or advanced format drive. It is recognized and runs just fine on my Mac Os X and also on Windows 7 no problem however. The 128 Mb buffer also seems to increase its transfer rates.

The used drive that I received came with a one year warranty from the seller. Buyers should be aware that, according to WDC which now owns HGST, the remaining years of the five year manufacturer’s warranty could not be transferred to a second owner.

I ordered 2 new drives from server part deals. Received a drive with 1400 power-on hours, and one drive with 21 hours. Drive seems ok, but if I wanted used drives, I wouldn’t have paid new prices.

I just bought two of these for use as backup drives. So far I have only used one of them, and I have successfully backed up over 4TB of files. It’s really too early to say that “5 stars” is what I’m getting out of this product, so I will come back and update this review after the shakedown cruise has been completed.

Update: It has been six months since I purchased these drives. Have not had any trouble. One is mounted internally in a desktop computer, and the other is in an external USB 3.0 drive enclosure (Inateck brand). Both have been reliable and I haven’t had any trouble at all.

My main concern was if these were refurbished or not…They were not. Smartctl showed ~200 hours of operation on each drive. The drives have performed as advertised, are quiet and run cool. For the record I am running these in a ZFS RAIDZ2 pool. It has been running for greater than 60 days and no issues.

Ordered 2 of the ultrastar He8 8TB drives for my Synology ds412+ NAS. Performed extended smart test on both with no issues, took about 4 days with them being such large drives. Moving my media library about 4TB to them only took 4-6 hours. Drives are running 7 degrees cooler than the 4TB drives in the enclosure. I am a little disappointed at the noises that the drives put off when being accessed, they are louder than the Seagate or other Hitachi drives I have used.

I purchased two of these 8 Tb drives to install in the Mediasonic ProRaid USB 3.0 2 Bay 3.5 inch SATA Hard Drive Enclosure – USB 3.0 Support UASP and SATA 3 6.0Gbps Speed (Version 2) (HUR5-SU3). I wanted to consolidate my media libraries for use with iTunes/Apple TV and have space to grow as I move from DVD’s to digital. Both drives installed without a glitch and showed up as 8GB in the finder on my Mac Pro 2012. I formatted them with Apple’s Disk Utility as GUID, journaled. These are the first HGST drives I’ve ever owned. Although I have owned Seagates and Western Digital. I’ve not had a WD drive fail on me before, as far as I can remember, but I have had a Seagate fail I believe.

I will update this review should anything change in the future… which I hope I don’t have to do because copying terabytes of files takes quite a while— and I would really hate to have to do it all over again! But, so far, so good. The drives in the external USB 3.0 enclosure seem to be fairly fast, and I hardly notice the difference between the speed of these drives and my WD Blacks that I have installed internally.
