I have a Raspberry PI 3B (running Raspbian Stretch). I was tethering it to an iphone 6 over USB/hotspot with a Mint Mobile SIM. This setup worked great, but I was tying up an iphone just for the RPI and every once in a while I would need to restart the iphone (it didn’t happen that frequently actually maybe once every 5 weeks). I have the RPI configured as a WIFI hotspot for a security camera at a remote location with no other internet besides what is provided through the iphone and the data plan I had there. So the internet service via the iphone was the only way for the security camera to communicate out to the world (me) and for me to communicate back to it (using reverse SSH – for those who want to know…). This worked fine but was a pain if I needed to restart the iphone, say due to a power outage causing the battery to run down. I’d have to drive to the location, and restart the iphone, re-enable the hot spot – you get the idea, it was a pain.
I figured there had to be a way to use my Mint Mobile SIM (which is on the T-Mobile network) directly with the RPI. This USB modem does the trick. I saw another review state they got it working with qmicli (which is a command line interface to configure a qualcomm based usb modem), I didn’t get that working with qmicli as I couldn’t immediately find instructions. Fortunately I found another blog post that walks through setting up this exact modem on the RPI. All you need is your carrier’s APN. In my case for Mint Mobile it was “wholesale”. I can’t post the l-i-n-k so find the instructions by the following method below:

Once you get the instructions, It’s pretty straight forward. In the end where it explains how to update the DNS service, I replaced it with the google dns which is 8 8 8 8 and 8 8 4 4. Everything works great, I can get like 5-22Mbit/s up and down which is perfect for my needs (and considering the device is in a bad T-Mobile area, I’m happy with that). Now when I reboot the PI, internet comes back up – no iphone needed 🙂

I looked everywhere for a device that would use my T-Mobile SIM card that I was previously using in another laptop that had a built-in SIM slot for mobile broadband. When I first got this device, I couldn’t connect to T-Mobile as others have stated. I called T-Mobile and gave them the IMEI number of the new device. It turns out that the number that comes up in the Cricket app in the “Choose Device” list is missing the final digit. T-Mobile transferred me to higher and higher levels of support until I was told that the device is incompatible with Windows 10. Not true! I finally found the correct IMEI number in Windows 10 – Network Settings, Cellular, Advanced Options. I called back and gave this info to another T-Mobile representative, and the connection then came up, but I still could not surf the web. I had to enter an Internet APN in the same Advanced Options screen. Here are those instructions: give it a profile name – T-Mobile works fine, then enter the APN as epc.tmobile.com. Leave everything else at the default settings, apply the profile, then save. It took a lot of trial and error with T-Mobile tech support to get the correct APN settings, so I hope this will help someone. Attached is a screenshot from speedtest.net after getting it to work.
Farvision Networks –
This device does NOT work with Tmobile sims. I have an older Rocket 1 Sim, a brand new prepaid ‘kit’ sim, and two sims from older ZTE hotspots. The device itself is blacklisted from the tmobile network. I get a page redirect to Tmobile that says ‘Your data plan does not work on this device. Click *here* to sign up for a new data plan.’ Clicking the link takes me to ‘We’re sorry, we are not able to help you with a plan change here. Please check my.tmobile.com or call customer care to complete this service charge.’
Additionally, the cricket connector software (which works great by the way) opens a Cricket purchase page. Which does not resolve since the device is not on a network. I re-enabled my Desktop connection to diagnose. Worked on it for an hour or so. All other Sims with all other devices brought me to the tmobile page to reactivate or pay more. They want your money for sim data. Not for this device. I didn’t even bother calling in. They know the score, it’s an obvious blacklist.
This device may work with other carrier’s sims – but not tmobile.
Additionally, the IMEI pasted into Cricket’s BYOB check showed it was NOT compatible. There was a number missing. Not going to play guessing games on this one. Will return for true Tmobile rocket usb device.

I had to learn what an unlocked modem actually meant.
This device is blocked from Tmobile itself, but subcarriers like Simple Mobile work just fine.
I am doing some testing with carriers in my Florida market.

Tested an H20 Sim. Buying worked even better than Simple. ATT network instead of Tmobile.
Put on the $10 plan which is supposed to not have data, but it worked.

Got my Lyca Mobile sim in the mail. Activation required a handset, so I had to flip them to run * codes. Then activate the sim on their website before I could even get to plan purchase. $19 was the min and that was for 100 MB data. Plans did not seem comparable to others on the market, so I mothballed the sim. Changed review to five stars. I love unlocked USB modems! May play around with other sims and data plans but we sort of already have a North America winner in ATT and TMOB with H2O and Simple. Simple has a Walmart partnership and you can grab top-up cards from anywhere, as well as online, easily.

Bought this for use in China and in Hong Kong (China Mobile and Unicom). Both sim cards did not work. Device would not activate. Not sure if it is all hardware but being this is an unlocked device, I am assuming it would work with any GSM sim card. Couldn’t test it on TMobile (but reviewers say it works) while in the USA since this item requires a full sized sim card and I did not have a way to put my nano sim in it for testing before coming back to China. who uses those nowadays?
The other thing shoppers should note, the spring inside the sim card housing is too strong. I needed more than a fingernail to push the sim in and get it locked.
