I have a love-hate relationship with rope (& other fabric) perches. I bought this because I recently rescued a disabled parrot who needed something he could grip easier. It is good quality and works well for him, however, he is not one that picks at his perches. Rope and other fabric perches can be dangerous for birds who like to pick them apart because they ingest some of the fibers which can cause compaction and other health issues (I had one do this in the past and needed vet care). So, while it’s a good perch, I caution everyone who buys to watch their birds and remove it if you see them picking it apart.

This is my birds favorite perch. She sleeps on it every night. Good quality perch that can be easily washed in the washer machine.

My lovebird loved the smaller one of these I had for him so when I purchased a larger cage I bought him this 32″ one as well. He uses them all the time, and as they are wired inside, you can bend them into the shape you require for more functionality. This is the only perch my bird will hold onto as well (he is a bit on the elderly side) and grip tightly and flap his wings to exercise his wings. He even hangs onto it upside down. He loves it as I’m taking that as an endorsement and I therefore can easily recommend this product.
UPDATE: This week one side of the rope pulled right out of it’s plastic attachment that attaches to the side of the cage. I have therefore dropped this from 5 stars to 4, as I had to go out and buy some gel superglue in order to the glue the rope back into the plastic fastener. I was not very happy about this as it is still quite new, and a lovebird is simply not very heavy and this particular one is not a chewer. Seems a bit shoddy workmanship. I still recommend, but you may find you may have to glue it back together as I did.
In order to advance my crusade to improve bird nutrition and health I wanted to include here a recipe for a fresh diet that a breeder I highly respect gave me (Thank you Angela) just to offer some advice to keep our pet birds healthier – it is not at all related this the product I have reviewed here but it could very well give you some great ideas to get fresh fruits and vegetables into your bird.
All domestic birds, especially parrots, lovebirds, parrotlets, parakeets, canaries, finches, conures, etc, should have fresh fruit and vegetables and they can present a challenge to get them to eat them. Gives this recipe a try Here’s a recipe that I make and it took some time for them to get used to it, but now my lovebirds and my parrotlets both eat this when provided. I give it in the morning and remove uneaten food in the evening.
1 apple cored and chopped
1/2 Cup chopped raw broccoli
1 Chopped bell pepper seed included
2 shredded carrots
1/2 Cup chopped greens (bok choy, mustard greens, kale and/or chard)
1/4 Cup frozen corn (can be eliminated if you put slices of raw corn on the cob in treat holders/clips in your cage – all my birds LOVE it and I have had 100% success getting them to eat this)
1/4 Cup frozen peas
1/2 Cup cooked rice (brown or GABA brown rice)
1/2 Cup cooked dried beans (they will need to be soaked overnight for 8 hours)
A handful of blueberries, chopped cherries and chopped seedless grapes
Mix all ingredients together in a large bowl. Place ingredients in an ice cube tray and freeze. Remove frozen cubes and place in plastic bags to store in freezer. Then you can take out the perfect portion on a daily basis . They say 1 cube per bird but you may find that 1 cube will work well for a pair of birds of if smaller birds, even more. Instead of an ice cube tray I use slider freezer bags and press them flat after I fill them with enough of the mixture which makes freezer storage easy and this way I can easily break off appropriate sized pieces. This recipe is variable and you can switch out or add/delete ingredients that you have on hand or what you know your birds already like.
This recipe is in ADDITION to their regular diet of pellets and seeds and not a substitute.

I got one large and two small of these rope perches for my budgie (parakeet) who now has a disabled leg. He needs a way to climb more since his landing skills aren’t as good, and I wanted to provide a softer surface for his good leg since it’s getting most of the pressure now. I installed the two smaller rope perches in a half circle around his food and water dishes so he has an easy landing/perching surface for eating and drinking. The long rope perch runs from the bottom of the left side of the cage up to the top of the right side, and it’s not a small cage. He also has several wood perches and a couple of platforms to choose from. I see him sitting on the long rope perch quite often.
The most important thing with rope perches for any bird is to wrap them with vet wrap. When they’re brand new they’re fine, but with wear and tear, especially if your bird chews on them, strings will start to come loose. These strings can wrap around a toe, leg, or even a neck, trapping your bird and causing injury or death. There have been many cases of birds ingesting the rope fibers after chewing on the rope perch—this will cause an expensive vet bill, as the fibers get impacted in the bird’s crop, requiring surgery, or the bird will die. By wrapping the perch in vet wrap you protect your bird from these loose strings. If your bird is an avid chewer, like my caique, vet wrap may not be enough and a rope perch may not be the best choice. For birds like my budgie though, who doesn’t chew very much, it can be made to be very safe.
Now onto the quality of the rope perch. I’ve owned a few rope perches in the past. This brand seems to be just as good of quality as any others I’ve owned. They were easy to install, even with my hands being not all that strong. I love that they’re bendable and they will hold whatever shape you put them in. They are hard to clean, but again if you wrap them in vet wrap, the vet wrap is somewhat easier to clean and you can just remove it and rewrap when they get too dirty. Overall they seem pretty durable and I expect them to last a long time.
