Marsha Wexler –
Let’s cut to the chase
I am familiar with Kichler products, and for the most part, I like this lamp. However, I do have a tad bit of remorse that the light this replaced was a little more conservative in the light it distributed, i.e., its plastic lens was enclosed and did not broadcast as much lighting, as it was behind an opaque lens, wherein this lamp is all glass, is much more open, and I can see the bulb shining.
What was received?
I received a simple non-retail like brown cardboard package that measured about 7” x 7” x 12¼” and weighed-in at neat six (6) pounds.
Inside
Inside of course was Kichler’s lighting fixture; it was packaged perfectly.
Country of origin?
Made in China
Performance
I think it’s an open, airy light that was not that difficult to install and the glass fixture broadcasted more light than the lighting fixture this replaced.
Specifications?
A contemporary light that has glass shading material that is limited to a 75 watt draw bulb – which is a surprise to me, I was going to place an old-fashioned 100-watt incandescent lightbulb in [I think I had to select a larger version of this light]. Backplate Back Plate Height: 12” and
Back Plate Width: 4¾”. Depth is about 8½”
Plastic or glass
Clear seeded glass, which, to me, gives the visual look that the light is floating.
Use
There are several uses, I selected this as an exterior door lighting
Part of collection?
Yes. Several more lights make-up the Mercer collection.
Dimmable?
Yes.
Wet rated?
Yes.
Mounting style?
Wall mount
Mounting weight?
Near 4 LBS.
Seeded glass dimensions?
About 4” x 8”
ETL listed?
Yes, I appreciate that. ETL is one of the most extensive independent testing, inspection, and certification partners that handles consumer products of all types for safety and functionality.
ETL/UL Certification
There is an ETL certification on the light. That’s a positive, for me. I prefer certification. An ETL or UL certification is a third-party organization’s mark to certify the product [for Safety – that’s important for electrical whatever’s]. Having UL/ETL Marks are proof of product compliance to North American safety standards. Ask any electrical inspector. A product with UL or ETL Listed Marks are proof of product compliance to published industry standards, it’s a symbol of safety.
Like my refusal to be driven in a speeding car that has no seat belt; I will not use anything electrical that has not passed muster by a third-party organization, such as ETL/UL/CSA. It’s just common sense on a safety issue.
Is certification required?
A certification isn’t a requirement to sell an electronic device in the US. But do I really want to trust a device that the manufacturer did not want a third-party to certify? Typically, certifications are noted. Again, I DO see an ETL certifications on this lighting, hooray.
Value
The price is very competitive, for this level of quality.
I hope my thoughts added information.
Serial Buyer –
Love the way this looks on the house. Really modern and upscale design. Was an easy install for my electrical guy.
Serial Buyer –
Nice lamp, but not sure what to think of its durability: the body is PVC plastic. It doesnt look like it but as you install it, you can certainly tell. Hoping that the good reputation of Kichler means that this is not going to fall apart any time soon. Install is very easy. The mounting screws were too long so had to cut them (found on you tube that there is a simple cutter in standard wiring pliers–who knew?).

I was always a big fan of Kichler Lighting. But I have to say these lights that they are charging $229 for are way overpriced and poorly made. All 3 of the lights I received had scratches and touch ups. The touch ups look like they were done with a Sharpie that doesn’t match. I purchase the black with the silver highlights. It’s not highlights at all, it’s the cut edge of the material and it was never painted. The only reason I haven’t sent these back is that my wife said she didn’t care as they are higher up and most people won’t see it.
Stugots –
The seeded glass looks great, there is no denying that. I do however think that this light has a design flaw. This is wasp/bug heaven, it has an easily accessible place for them to get into and build a nest, and that is a big no for me. I am constantly fighting off wasps and removing their nests as it is. The light itself seems to be well made and it looks great. If I find a way to close it off so it’s not so easy for bugs to make it home, I will put it up, otherwise it is going into storage. I really like the look of the light, and it seems to be well made, I just don’t understand why it is so open to bugs when it’s an outdoor light.
Andrew Golub –
We have one of these on each side of our garage. The one light bulb produces plenty of light. The manufacturer was very responsive to our issue of how to put it together. Very easy! We have one glass chipped and they are sending us a new one. Completely happy with this product!
Ido2 –
We have several Kichler light fixtures in our home. Kichler products are generally of high quality — and you pay for that quality. The “Kichler Lighting Mercer 20 inch Outdoor Wall Light with Clear Seeded Glass” is no exception. The Mercer fixture is a very traditional style, although it’s described as “Contemporary.” It is 18.75 inches high, 9 inches wide, and 10.5 inches deep. Combine these measurements and you have a REALLY BIG light. Even though it’s quite large, without the glass, the metal fixture alone is surprisingly lightweight and seems almost flimsy. The seeded glass, on the other hand, is quite thick and hefty — which becomes almost painfully clear when holding it with one hand while using the other hand to attach it with two conical devices on the inside top of the metal frame as it sits 8 feet above the ground. (And all this time a pesky gnat keeps flying in my ear and eye.)
It’s a relatively simple installation aside from the concluding step of connecting the glass. I must say, however, that installing the frame would have been even more simple if all of the required hardware came with the light. Two pieces of hardware were missing. Fortunately, I was able to replace these missing pieces with the hardware from another light that I had removed earlier in the day.
The seeded glass is the star attraction of this Kichler light, as you can see in the photos. I think you’ll also agree that the tubular (9 inches long) LED Edison-style bulb looks better than the standard LED Edison bulb.
As for the relatively high price, this is typical for the Kichler brand. If it didn’t have the large, heavy, and *beautiful* seeded glass, I’d say it was overpriced, because the metal fixture is fairly unsubstantial. As it is, I’d rate it generously at 4.5 stars and round it up to 5.
