This is my second one in 10 years worth every penny.

I had a USB Blu-ray burner that, wait for it … burned out. For heavy duty use, internal is superior. This one was simple to install and works great, and I know from my old DVD burner of the same brand, LG is a super solid brand for disc burners. So far very happy!

Does the job, working well, UHD friendly

I bought this for a PC so I can start backing up my movies. I had to roll back the firmware to read the 4k UHD devices, but now everything is working perfectly! Now I can back up the media and host on my Emby or Plex server.
Install was smooth, read/write speeds are good, drive is as silent as a optical drive can be. I might buy a second so I can back up multiple disks at once!

Paired this drive with the Unitek SATA to USB 3.0 adapter model Y-3324 and is working flawlessly with it. I was able to flash it for use with Makemkv using the SDFTool Flasher in order to be able to read 4k Blu-rays. I have not had any issue reading normal 1080p BDs, 4k BDs, and even DVDs (god they look terrible on modern displays) but there is the option for the old schools that still use DVDs. The read speeds I don’t have any complain about it, using the Unitek adapter I am getting speeds of 12-35 MB/s using the back I/O panel of my desktop computer. Of course the back panel must have USB 3.0 or greater to achieve those speeds.
Overall I am satisfied with this little boy and for anyone looking for using MakeMKV, I highly recommend buying this drive and once it is flashed to the 1.02 MK version, it is a breeze porting your physical Blu-Ray and 4Ks library into the digital format.

Will update if the drive fails or have any issues.
After 10 days of having this drive ive gone through about 50 movies, a mix of dvd blu ray and 4k discs. So far zero issues, no read errors or anything. Does not work out of the box for my needs but a quick search online will help you out if you need it. DVDs are strangely slow but that’s so far only small complaint.

I have two computers with these and both work great. They are much faster than what originally DVD that came with the computer. The last computer was a Dell Optiplex 7090 MT and the slim DVD was ridiculously slow. It would take almost a minute to recognize a CD. This drive only takes seconds. (Yes you can put a full size DVD in a Dell 7090 MT)

I bought this LG DVD player/writer back in January of 2016, and it’s still working perfectly in January of 2024. And, I just found out that it was extremely easy to get it to work with 4K UHD discs (with a little work). I’d previously used this LG DVD player/writer to rip my entire library of about 800 movies to my HTPC for easy viewing on PLEX, but hadn’t used it in well over a year. However, my brother recently gave me all of the John Wick movies (1-4) in 4K for Christmas, so I immediately wanted to rip them to add to my library to view in my dedicated theater through my Nvidia Shield Pro, etc. Unfortunately, my LG DVD player/writer initially wouldn’t even read the 4K discs. None of the previous movies in my library had been 4K, just 1080P or less, so I was a little worried that I’d need to buy a new DVD writer to achieve the 4K ripping ability. However, after a little research, I was able to quickly/easily flash my good, old LG DVD player/writer from firmware version 1.00 to 1.02 with the free SDFtool Flasher (As I understand it, version 1.02 is the last version capable of ripping 4K movies on my version of this LG DVD player/writer – WH16NS60). I don’t know why LG removed the 4K ability with later firmware versions, but it’s great to know that you can flash it to whatever version you want with the right free tools, in order to make it more useful. Anyway, I was ecstatic that not only would I not have to pay to replace my 8-year-old version of this LG DVD player/writer, but what made me even happier was that I also wouldn’t need to take my HTPC down and remove it to install another player.

Well, this isn’t a fancy piece of tech and no one would jump in joy for the sight of an optical drive these days. It just does its job and does it well. I bought it several years ago and so far had no issues.
If you buy an optical drive in the 2020s it makes no sense to buy a DVD drive and not pay those few extra bucks and get a Blu-Ray drive instead. This drive is really not expensive and will allow you to watch HD movies on your PC, as well as burn BD-R discs with up to 50GB of storage on a single disc. It is, of course, backwards compatible with both CD and DVD for both reading and writing.
“Easy to install” gets 3/5 just because it’s an internal drive and you will need to open the computer’s case to install it, however that goes for any internal drive, it’s not like this specific model has a different installation method. Also note that many newer computer cases don’t have 5.25” drive bays anymore, so make sure your computer has one before you order any internal drive.
A few extra things that aren’t part of the official specs but would be interesting for some:
Pros:
* Reads Playstation 3 discs – One of the very few models that is able to ready original PS3 game discs. If you happen to have a PS3 with a broken drive, you can use this to create ISOs of said games on your computer.
* Can be flashed with LibreDrive firmware and used with MakeMKV or AnyDVD HD to read UHD movies. Note that this would probably void your warranty.
Cons:
* No bitsetting support for DVD+R – That could be an issue if you have an old standalone DVD player that refuses to play burned discs. Bitsetting is a method to fool such players into thinking that a DVD+R disc is a pressed DVD-ROM, but unfortunately this drive doesn’t support it, even with firmware updates.
