It was extremely easy to flash this drive and watch blu-rays using VLC, only took me like 2 minutes to do so.
MegaWatt –
I bought this with the specific intent of ripping files from old PlayStation 3 discs, as this is one of the few external blu ray drives capable of doing that. As for anything a normie would use this for, I have no idea. But if you’re using RPCS3 and wish to copy your own games over, this will do the job.

Chose a “good as new” listing from the vendor list, got a unused refurbished unit in OEM packaging including the protective plastic stick-ons. Did not bother with the included software disk. Plunged it into a USB-3 slot to give it enough power, on Win11. Tested a DVD and Blu-Ray using VLC, worked. Have not tried writing with it. I really got it to read PS3 disks for RPCS3, and it worked very well for the 1 I’ve done so far.
I’ll update if problems appear in the near term.

First of all, I love LG stuff. Almost everything I have is LG. However, with the advent of SD cards, I don’t use the Blu-Ray drive much. Maybe 4 times. But I noticed issues on the 3rd time I used it, where my laptop was having troubles recognizing it. On the 4th time, I realized why; the micro usb port. When I pulled it out of the laptop bag, the port came out right with the usb cord. While in my laptop bag, I kept the cord plugged in, but in a safe direction so that it would not stress the connection. It didn’t matter. Micro USB port broke. Do not buy this one.

I got this blue-ray drive for ripping PS3 Games for emulation, and movies for streaming with Plex for a NAS, or keep backups of them. Great drive.
Jacob Perialas –
Rips blue rays easily. Have not had any issues after 6 months of use. Got my entire Blu ray collection into digital.

Originally, I was upset that it I received the WP50NB40 (instead of the BP50NB40), but plugged it in and it still works for ripping games with RCPS3 for PS3 emulation! Keep in mind that it’s a dedicated device and you should attempt to plug it into a direct USB port (and not an unpowered hub). I had issues with my unpowered hub (where the Blu-Ray player was recognized, but couldn’t read the disc in Windows 10), but they were fixed when I put it into a dedicated USB port!

I bought this drive specifically for the purpose of digitizing my DVD and Blu-Ray collection. Out of the box, it ran flawlessly. I plugged in the provided micro USB connector-to-dual USB A cable, my mid-2012 Macbook Pro recognized it, threw in a DVD and was able to convert it. No issues whatsoever. Great, I’ll come back to it tomorrow to start chipping away at the rest of my collection. Plug it in as I did before, I hear the drive starting to initialized, but nothing comes up. After experimenting with how it was connected, checking that my USB ports weren’t failing, using different power sources, I just couldn’t get the drive to show up at all. Plug it into my Windows machine. I can see it in the hardware profiles, but it doesn’t come up as accessible to me. Online forums didn’t help at all. I was nearly ready to return it when I grabbed a spare micro-USB to USB-A cable laying around, single-ended. Plugged it in. Came up immediately. Tried on both Mac and Windows. Haven’t had an issue since. I waited a few months to post this review because I wasn’t fully confident in this drive’s ability to be recognized consistently. Since then, I’ve digitized somewhere around 100 DVDs/Blu-Rays and it doesn’t show signs of slowing down. Highly recommended. I just hope my experience saves someone some grief if they find that their drive isn’t being recognized by their computer, hence the minus one star.
