I love this story. It was never written as a study of the human condition, it’s the story of a boy, like 70 years ago, lost in the woods of Maine. And, it’s a true story, as Donn Fendler for years visited classrooms and spoke about his experience. I was discussing the book with my siblings, and one brother, who is a history buff, and particularly, a Maine history buff, had never heard the story. That surprised me, as I thought it was a read aloud in every 3rd grade classroom in Maine.
Anyway, I have had copies of it in the past, for my classroom, but couldn’t find one, so I replaced it, for my siblings to read and pass amongst them. Pretty quick read, just an hour or two, but a great story of a time gone by.

Great book for kids – especially if they like the movie that comes out in 2024. Wonderful tale as told by Fendler himself.

A truly fast read I read in a couple of hours. It’s written more at teenager level but still a really interesting story as he roams the mountain for NINE DAYS. Lucky to be alive. What’s in like “mentally” to be a young kid lost by yourself? That’s covered quite well here. I probably will see the movie but it is quite an inspiring story in a long ago time.

I haven’t read the book but my brother did!! And loves it!

It was a gift for my 10 year old grandson but I read it first and really liked it!

Amazing true story of a courageous 12 year old boys day to day existence as he struggles to survive in the wilderness of the mountainous region of northern Maine. Fascinating read for anyone one who will be, is, or has ever been 12 years old.

I guess. I don’t even remember getting this one.

I read this book when I was about the authors age at the time of the incident, and I enjoyed it, and it is still good reading for a young person. As an adult I found it OK, and I might have felt differently if I were a religious person, with all the references to prayer. But, as I say to religious friends, if it works for you, that’s fine with me. That being said, I would recommend the book for the age 10 to 15 reader, and you have to admire the author for the stamina to get through the ordeal, but also wonder what the heck he was thinking about when he left the safety of his experienced companion and guide. It also points out if he had just stopped where he was when he first realized he was off the trail he would likely have been found within 24 hours. There is a take-away for anyone headed into the wilderness.

A heart stopping, tear jerking, cheer-out-loud inspirational true story of a 12-year old boy’s terrifying experience of being lost on a mountain for nine days in freezing cold conditions. Half naked with only a blanket he found in a deserted cabin to cover himself at nights while sleeping in beds of moss under trees, fighting starvation, unending mosquitos and other biting insects, he never gave up hope of finding help. He prayed every day and night thanking God for whatever berries he could find to eat and asking why it was taking so long to find help. A great story of adventure, survival and never giving up that young and old alike will find deeply inspiring. I bought 6 books to give to my grandchildren to inspire them with the joy of reading. My one 11- year old grandson is now writing a book report on it that, by the way, is required reading for all school children in Maine.
