Scubed –
Right out of the package, these were playable for a beginner. I tuned them up a little bit to try to match the head tension of a comparable Latin Percussion set. I noticed that to get a similar sound to the professional ones, I had to strike quite a bit harder than usual. The higher overtones are much duller on these than the LPs as well, so may have trouble cutting through an ensemble and get lost in the mix. Overall, quite like them for the price point, and they seem very durable. Would probably recommend for a kid or adult beginner.
