So this is a real instrument, the little drum sounds a little woodpecker-ish. I rubbed some oil in it and it made it better, I also tuned a little bit, and made it a little bit better. I’m hoping it’ll get better over time, but it’ll work. It’s always a gamble when you buy bongos that you can’t hear first. But overall I’m happy. I’ll play with it a little bit more tuning wise and it’ll be fine.

at $34, i thought, these will be more like a toy than a real instrument. NOT! these are small but you can extract nuance from them. actually, i’m a drummer and installed them on a rack. i play them with sticks, but i can get a great sound by paying around the head and with rim shots. they’re tunable! real cowskin heads. real lugs and real solid wood. some reviewers mentioned they’d use them to practice while travelling. for a pro or serious hobbyist, i doubt that would work given the head size. i’d recommend a 6″ toca for that purpose. but for a cool effect, which is how i’m using them they’re great. i’ve got them installed with a set of toca bongos, lp aspire bongos, set of junior congas, and three full size congas. yes, its rediculous, but i get the full range from tiny bell-like sounds from the minis all the way down to the big kahunas.

The bongos are of a high quality, but they are small so it’s difficult to get much sound out of them. Good for small hands.

My 2 year old LOVES to play the drums. These bongos are very small with wonderful, real sound that can be played by adults as well. They are heavy, so if a child uses them, you have to teach them how to be careful with them since they are real & not a toy. They are beautifully crafted and tunable. Big hit with my daughter and the look on people’s faces when they hear what great sound they have is priceless.

I purchased these for my 18 month old son who LOVES music. I wanted a “real” bongo, not a cheap child’s play instrument. He LOVES these, and they fit his hands perfectly with years of use to come. High quality and great sound, without being too loud. We obviously always supervise him while he is using these as they are a real instrument, not a toy. Very pleased.

Yes,there small but very well made!!I recieved apair of the cresent red mahogany a while back.they were half off.and one of the skins were very thing.I broke it while using drum sticks.only the overly thin skin broke, but for the price, replacing it will not be a big deal because they are still very nice bogos.I like my small ones just to goof around w/,my fingers and are very nice, strong sturdy proffesion bongos.Too cool!Thanx amazonians!!

I love mine, but they might not be right for someone just starting out. The small size makes them harder to play; you have to be very precise and hit them harder, and the sound is not very bongo-like at all. That said, they are more than toys; the sound they do make is clear and pleasing depending on how you tune them (and position them), they are well made and very beautiful. I tune it so the hembra sounds like horse hooves and the macho sounds like Woody Woodpecker, alot of fun to play. Also, you can (carefully) mount these on a standard snare drum stand. UPDATE: 2/19/14 : they still sit on my coffee table and I still play them often, just ordered a pair for my sister.
