Everything I was looking for in a snare stand… well, almost. It’s very well designed and is nice and heavy, so it doesn’t walk around when I lay into it. The manufacturer, like some others, neglected to include the basket capacity in the description. This is very worth mentioning. Nothing is more disappointing than ordering a snare stand only to get it and realize that your wood-hoop snare won’t fit in the basket. I decided to have faith that this higher-end stand would have at least a 15 inch capacity, and it does indeed. My wood-hoop snares fit easily into this. Moving parts are nice and smooth. Every bit as nice as the top-dog DW stand that cost $100 more. I have one of those too. What I like more about this Atlas stand versus the DW is that the basket joint is in center-line or linear with the trunk. The DW has an offset joint. This probably isn’t a big deal for most players. It’s an issue for me because I play with two kick drums and have 3 rack toms hovering over the kicks and are in tight proximity to the snare… so symmetry comes into play on my kit. The offset joint on the DW causes me to have to turn the legs a bit and set the entire tripod slightly to the right to compensate for the offset. It can be done, but it’s a bit of a pain to get perfect, and my OCD kicks in because the tripod isn’t directly in the middle between my kicks and pedals. The Atlas is easier to get it just right, and once you tighten it down, it does not move. Ever. And I don’t care for the handle on the joint screw on the DW… it’s plastic and too long, so it won’t spin all around, but rather has a button you have to push in and pull out on the handle, rotate it back, push it back in again, turn it to tighten or loosen, and repeat… a GIGANTIC pain in the a**, and somebody at DW should be fired for coming up with that. So… the only thing I would change about this Atlas stand… and I hope maybe someone at Ludwig (and other companies, for that matter) will see this and pay attention… not every drummer has a want or need for the ability to tilt the basket side-to-side. While the basket joint is linear with the trunk of the stand (which is great), it would still be nice if y’all would offer the big heavy duty top-dog stand with more of a standard type basket tilter that just tilts forward/back and NOT side to side. The toothless tilter is fantastic… just offer one that just goes forward and back and not side to side. I don’t need that feature, and it just makes it a bit more difficult to get it exactly where I want it. Or at least make it so that the forward/back tilt adjustment is separate from the side/side adjustment. That way the player can adjust only what he needs without having to dick with the other at the same time. Come on, hardware designers, you guys are supposed to be smart!!! Overall, this is an awesome stand and I would buy it again in a heartbeat. It’s almost perfect!!

All my cymbal and drum stands being from this same series (Ludwig Atlas Pro) of very good quality, I wanted another stand for a second snare drum so I opted for uniformity, although it was rather expensive. However, I found the lowest price for this item on Amazon.
