It only worked a few times . It would lock up and not turn on for me. I never got it set up! Looks like a nice unit, but has to work!

I have been using handheld GPS for the outdoors and fieldwork for over 10 years and most of them has been Magellan. I consulted a lot of different reviews about this unit (as well as comparable ones from GARMIN) before deciding on purchasing this particular model. Yes, it does indeed take a little bit to get used to the menu system and the touch screen interface but once you do it becomes second nature. You MUST make sure to update the firmware to the latest release available in the Magellan website; the earlier release version was very buggy. One of the things that sold me on this particular model was the easy access to the freeware software available to basically make maps from ANY image (even satellite imagery) to download to this GPS and also the ability to turn this unit into a pocket PC (with the right MOD conversion software stored in the SD memory card) which enables you to do a lot more with it than just GPS functions. It is rugged, good screen size and it does its job very well and reliably.

I am a big fan of Magellan GPS for the auto and own one for each car. I have a Crossover, and expected this to be a step up. I read reviews explaining problems, but several others stated that an upgrade to the fireware made them go away. This has not been the case with me. Mine was shipped with the latest firmware but it locks up almost every time it is connected to the computer, requiring me to unplug and remove the batteries. Since the installed basemap is worthless, you have to connect in order to load maps. I have tried to reload the firmware, but the unit locks up during the process. The instructions included with the unit were almost worthless and the ones online obviously refer to a earlier version of the software, since it describes buttons and commands that aren’t there. The big selling point is the connection with National Geographic TOPO maps. The one map that I have been able to get on the unit is nothing to brag about. The obsolete Crossover has a map that can zoom much closer. The GPS performs well when it is not connected to the computer. Perhaps I’m not as bright as some of the other reviewers, but the menu system is not nearly as easy to use or as intuitive as they said. All in all, this was a big disappointment.

Purchased this item, took it out on a short hike, 10 miles. While I was playing with it before the hike I noticed it was locking up. I would either have to reset it or pull the batteries and restart. It started doing the same thing during the hike. It locked up and on restarting couldn’t acquire any satellites. I reloaded firmware when I got home, reset to factory defaults and put new batteries in, same problem. I checked a few forums and found them littered with problems of the same sort. This is a quality control/design issue on Magellan’s part. The odds are because I got a bad one, the next 30 will be just fine. I’m not willing to deal with this again. I shipped it back to Amazon yesterday. I have a Garmin Nuvi for the car and I love it, so I got a Foretrex 401 instead. Its about the same money and it adds the heart rate monitor, which for trail running is a huge plus. Also, vantage point software is very clumsy and not very useful. I didn’t really like the idea of spending 200$ on maps for it also.

I’m not sure about the documentation on this. Some places is says barometric altimeter, I couldn’t find any such function. It also said electronic compass. The GPS compass was ok when I was moving, but worthless when standing still.

Overall, nice looking product. Very impressive when it works. It didn’t work enough for me.

I really can’t put a star rating on this device, due to the fact that i do not own it. I’m not trying to be a Jerk or put somone out of Business. But the title of the reveiw says it all, dont get me wrong i’m all for someone making a a dollar or 2. But $280.00 New or the cheapest new $249.95 & $173.00 Used Really? I can go to[…] & buy a new Triton 1500 & The bike mount for $246.98 that includes the $7.00 shipping fee out the door. So my suggestion is drop the price to be a fair competitor to Magellan.com

Got this for my husband and he has really enjoyed hiking with this GPS. He is able to mark point of interest with a photo and check actual miles hiked with ease. He loves the way it functions. Has really enjoyed this item. Great for out door people.

I have had the Triton 1500 and encountered none of the many problems I see listed. People say they can’t see screen in sunlight but all you have to do is adjust brightness with side button because screen times out and dims to conserve battery. People say it freezes their computer but for me it has only not wanted to connect every now and then but all you do is restart the gps unit and it connects. You have to make sure the VP software is on and running before connecting gps. But I have now encountered a Major Bummer…It does not support Mac and I just bought a MacBook Pro running the newest OS X Lion. I did not learn this until I wanted to install Vantage point onto my Mac. So the moral of the story is if you have a PC and are moderately computer literate or have a kid that is and can help you the first couple of times it is a good and powerfully accurate unit. I would suggest to carry extra batteries if you are gonna have it on for long durations. Constant use can kill a brand new set in about four or five hours. And one last thing, the guy that said he has been programming computers since the 60’s and this is a definite no buy, well he must have worked for the government in the 60’s because nobody had home computers. Either that or he is just full of it, I put my money on the second one……Almost forgot to tell you that the new update to vantage point offers a pretty good satellite view but the base maps do kinda stink until you pay to upgrade. I personally prefer the ones from VP over the ones from NG Topo for ease of use.
