I have a lot of stock in both Milwaukee and Makita cordless tools and corded tools. So when I needed a new grinder I knew it had to be cordless, brushless and one of these 2 brands. I had owned the brushed Milwaukee and didn’t care for it, and have used the brushless Fuel version, which is so much better. However when I was looking at the Milwaukee compared to this Makita I couldn’t overlook the $60 price difference, so I went with the Makita. After using it for several weeks of grinding and cutting steel, I have to say…its a fantastic tool! Its got plenty of power on a 5.0 battery and will go for several days of intermittent use without draining the battery. Its not much heavier than the corded versions with the 5.0, and its so convenient to be able to work untethered. Of course you can run the Milwaukee until the cows come home with the 12.0 battery but who wants to carry that monster?? The next one I buy will be the XAG09Z for the electric brake, its worth the extra $25 to be able to just set it down after you switch it off and not have to wait for the wheel to spin down or grind on something to stop it. Sorry Milwaukee, I see no reason to spend the extra money for the Fuel unless you needed the extra runtime and don’t mind holding the weight of a giant pack.

I have several of the Makita LXT 18 volt tools. They are all very good quality and this one is no exception.
I’ve been using it to grind cement patches smooth and it is powerful and not very noisy. I haven’t even felt the need for ear protection.
My only complaint is how fast us goes through a battery. I use 2.0 AH batteries for all my tools. They are lightweight and run plenty long enough on the other tools for most jobs, including the chain saw. But this grinder uses up a 2 AH battery in just a few minutes of use. I have ordered a 4 AH battery to use in this tool, which should last twice as long. That will still be pretty short, but a lot more useful.
Otherwise, it’s another excellent tool in the Makita LXT line.

This replaced my 15+ year old original brushed model that still works to this day. Overall this is more powerful, ergonomic and easier to use. I’ll keep my old one as a backup. Makita makes some of the highest quality cordless tools available and this is no exception.

If you’re considering a grinder, this cordless Makita is the WAY TO GO!!! It’s compact enough to fit anywhere, very durable (dropped it from a 40′ windmill by accident), and the most quiet grinder I’ve ever used. I only wish it had a tool belt hook.
