This review is for the Black Panther Shadow snare, and I am surprised that there arenโt more reviews of this drum. Seriously. The snare wires are extremely responsive at all dynamics. The finish is beautiful and unique. The strainer is totally smooth and precisely adjustable. The bearing edges are consistent and well cut. The stock heads and snare wires sound great, though I will replace them with others that I like a little more. This drum sounds just as good playing backbeat stuff as it does playing jazz. It has that thick Philly Joe thing happening. I usually donโt like deeper shells as much because you typically lose some snare response, but this drum has a slightly wider snare bed that keeps the snare wires lively. An amazing instrument all around. My only complaint is that the Mapex โMโ is on the top of each of the snare adjustment knobs. I know itโs a small personal preference kind of thing, but I think the โMโ that they put on everything now looks cheap and tacky. That aside, Mapex is absolutely killing it right now. I have a small Saturn kit, and a larger Meridian Maple, that both sound really fantastic. Best quality for the money of any brand, without question.
