A very entertaining read. Great protagonists, antagonists, and supporting cast.
In some ways this novel reminded me of Like Water for Elephants.

I’ve read several books by this author, and I was not as thrilled with this one, but it was still interesting and entertaining. It was sort of frustrating to read, because I felt perhaps the main character could have done something about her circumstances. Part of the point of the book, though, was to highlight her mental illness. I knew some things about the “snake oil salesmen” but not about the 1900 hurricane in Galveston. Even though the title of the book mentions Galveston, though, the hurricane was a short section at the end of the story, and I thought it could have played a bigger role. The author is a nurse, and the medical issues are described thoroughly and accurately. Not a bad story, all in all.

My first impression at the start of this book was that, although well drenched in history, the main character was devoid of character. I was wrong about that, as The book unfolded before me. Great character development and setting added to an amazing story!!! Addictive reading!!!!

I stumbled upon Amanda Skenandoreโs novels in recent years, first reading The Nurseโs Secret. After that novel I proceeded to binge all her previous work as fast as I could buy them. This most recent novel didnโt disappoint.
Another historical fiction masterpiece where Amanda weaves together the characters and storylines so artfully that each character develops effortlessly and yet somehow in perfect time with the larger story. She strings together details in a way that draws readers into a vivid storylineโ it reads like a feature film! Her writing style is so descriptive it feels like youโre there alongside the characters. Like always, the last chunk of the novel is so captivating that sleep can wait for another day as I find myself enthralled and invested so deeply into the characters that I read for hours into the night just to know the ending.
As a practicing registered nurse in modern healthcare, I deeply appreciate Amandaโs integration of historically accurate medical practices and ideologies along with complex historical events and cultural practices. Overallโ another excellent piece of literature by an amazing author.

I really enjoyed this novel- itโs great historical fiction about an era I was not familiar with before reading. The characters are very enjoyable, and some are villains some are heroes. The main character is a female doctor and my favorite.

I picked up this book because I’m familiar with the Galveston hurricane of 1900, and because the plot sounded interesting. I enjoyed finding out more about medicine shows (I hadn’t realized that they were actual shows with performances, rather than just ‘infomercials.’ And I really liked all the supporting characters. Even Huey is wonderful to hate.
But the main character is another matter. I had a very difficult time believing that Tucia had ever had the gumption to go to medical school. If all of her negative self-talk is meant to make us feel sorry for her, it didn’t work for me. She appears, objectively speaking, to be just as useless as she (and others) think she is. Nor is it believable that she is suddenly functional at the end. She didn’t finish her internship, so how does she have surgery-under-pressure skills?
It didn’t help that I found three typos (mostly the wrong word substituted for the correct one) in the first thirty pages or so.
This could easily have been a four-star read if not for an unbelievable main character who is full of victim tropes and not much else.

Do not miss this book! A fantastic author , , larger than life characters , and a plot that just took my breath away!! As someone with a grandmother born with epilepsy in 1906, it is quite true that they would put the patient in the asylum. My mother and uncle both passed away believing that their mother had died in childbirth at age 29, when my uncle was born. In truth, her death certificate states that she actually died from a grand mal seizure 3 months after my uncle was born. Her parents were so afraid she would be put away that the truth wasn’t discovered until it was too late… My mother and uncle both passed away without this life-changing knowledge. How far the world has come!! Great read by an amazing author!!! I will follow this writer always!

The author takes on a journey of a woman in early 1900s. One with big dreams as women were taking steps beyond being wives and mothers. Though the dream was big, she took big steps forward. But on the ladder up it’s not hard to find people only to willing to push you down. How far can one fall before you are paralyzed in the failure? The book is not about the hurricane that hit Galveston as I had hoped. But the party of the book that does cover it is very interesting. In the end I learned a lot of things about those traveling shows. It was a good read.

Whereas I have loved The Nurse’s Secret by the author, I was rather disappointed in her new novel . I had big problems getting into the story and most of the characters were uninteresting for me. They were way too predictable. It could well be because I had expected a novel more focused on medicine. The last part of the novel was much more compelling when the flood got in the way…. However I did enjoy reading about a boy with Down syndrome as I have one myself and worked with many. What the author mentioned about their medical condition was correct, but when Toby was talking he didn’t sound at all like a child with Down syndrome. His language skills were too good (particularly at his age), and he was given a behaviour much too mature that did not fit.
