Collin –
I bought this book (Kindle Edition) for school purposes and found out that not all the code is in the example code in the book. This makes it rather hard to understand what should go in the positions unless you have a friend next to you with the hardcover to show what’s actually supposed to go there.
So if you get this, buy the hardcover.
Agyengo –
Although it’s not a book for person with no prior knowledge in coding it’s best book for me
Bill –
Illustrations and examples in the book match what you see on your screen.
Zsolt Hajnalka –
I liked the balance between giving some info on the considerations behind the language constructs but not going into details to a frightening extent.
Louis Umensetter –
Excellent book for those with either a bit of C# knowledge or another language. I was converting from Java and this book gave me all the basics and some more advanced topics.
B. Oakes –
The book lives up to the name. Step by step and easy to follow. Excellent book.
Amazon Customer –
What an absolutely fabulous book!
Having completed a degree (many years ago) when Pascal and then Delphi were all the rage coming to C# and working through this book my mind has been blown away. Yes some of the exercises do need a high level of concentration but it really is worth it.
There are concepts in modern computing that I haven’t come across before. This book covers them so well. For example Covariant Interfaces or Parallel Classes etc, etc – brilliant reading.
One drawback to the book, although the worked exercises are excellent, perhaps some unworked exercises (with solutions) could be considered for inclusion in a future edition.
Leandro Maia Rodrigues –
Provavelmente um dos melhores livros para o aprendizado da linguagem.
Jerrud –
The writing is good and I’ve been learning. I’m bummed that examples that use XAML won’t work if you’re using Visual Studio on Mac. I know it’s a Microsoft book teaching a Microsoft language, but just throwing this out to the Mac VS users out there.
Robert J. Armijo –
I got my CS degree long before OOP became a thing and then migrated into marketing so my programming muscles hadn’t been exercised for years. Recently I decided I wanted to re-educate myself and since Visual Studio and C# is easy to get running on my laptop I decided to start there and used this book as my guide.
This wasn’t the first book I picked for learning C#, but it has been the best.
Ernesto Cabagne –
Para personas que se inician en C#, me parece buen material.
CLPT –
This book is an excellent resource for getting into C#. I consider myself a moderately experienced programmer in another programming language, but I had virtually no prior knowledge of C# or .NET when I bought this book. Having read the book cover to cover and typed along virtually all exercises, I can say that this book was extremely useful towards learning the basics (and more) of C# and .NET, to the point where I was able to create C# tools at work and have informed conversations with C# programmer colleagues.
The book lives up to its “step by step” title: the chapters are arranged in a logical and useful order. The book discusses basic topics first before moving on to more advanced topics.
The writing is clear and unambiguous. There are bits of humour, anecdotes and comparisons of certain features with similar features in other programming languages. The physical book is of high quality: high quality printed pages, well bound. The book is black and white.
There are lots of exercises (a few in each chapter) where you can type along, implement and experiment with the concepts discussed in that chapter. Some chapters build on each other, and some exercises start off from where a previous exercise ended, which helps consolidate learning. Solution source code is provided for each example, so you can start off even if you didn’t finish a previous exercise.
In summary, I’m happy I bought this book and would recommend it to anyone getting started with C#.

I’ve been a fan of John Sharp’s books since I started programming. I highly recommend this for anyone looking to home school themselves to work with VS2017 in C#.
