I purchased this book because I was intrigued. I bought for my granddaughters with the intent of reading it first. Love, love and love this book. Magical, fun and wacky adventure with a dose of everyone is important in their life’s journey. I am pretty sure they will absolutely love it.

Kudos Kate!
For any kid who has felt “less than” it is an uplifting treasure. The vocabulary is an extra boon to pick apart and examine with kids. Of course the wackiness, humor and absurdity are what keep the kids interested and entertained, but the three girls in the story each have many wonderful characteristics that endears them to the reader. I read this with my eleven year old neurodivergent granddaughter and she enjoyed every aspect. The book brought us to discussion regarding “others”, their differences, needs and feelings to name a few. We loved it and we both highly recommend it.

TLDR: Love the book cover and illustrations! I haven’t gotten to read it yet but I love the book design. It seems like it’s a book full of good life lessons and will uplift anyone who feels different in the world today, which is exactly why I got it. It looks great on our bookshelf and I can’t wait to fully read it. I just finished reading this with my 3rd grader, and we both agree it deserves 5 stars! The vibe is something like Harry Potter meets A Series of Unfortunate Events meets Despicable Me and then just throw in a focus on female characters, Kate McKinnon’s incredible humor and creativity, and you have a great little series brewing. We loved the positive message about the strength in being different, the value of science and learning, and we were laughing the whole way through. It was a great read to do together because of the elevated vocabulary, but I loved that Kate trusts our young readers to learn some new words and didn’t oversimplify the language. I think my 5th grader could easily read this independently and she’ll be getting it next. The book ended with a few threads of a mystery unfolding and we can’t wait to see what happens in the next installment!

I bought this book after seeing Kate on the Tonight Show and Late Night with Seth Myers. It sounded wonderful. She said she wrote it for middle school age kids who find themselves not fitting in to the common mold. I’m sure Kate can relate to being different as she has such a special sense of humor and is gay. My husband and I have loved her work on SNL and I hoped that humor would be in this book as well. I plan to give this book to my grand daughter for Christmas but I had to read it first. It is delightful! I hesitated after another reviewer said it ended on a cliffhanger. I would disagree. The first story ends but the next book that
is set up. She said she had been putting this book together for the last 20 years, I hope it doesn’t take her that long to write the next one. The illustrations are great, the character names hilarious, the plot well laid out. As to age of the reader, I’ll have to take Kate’s word for it being for middle school age. I’m obviously much older but I like quirky stories and I laughed out loud at least once and smiled a lot. The girls in the story learn valuable lessons and develop skills they never expected, and felt the pleasure of being successful after being told they were losers all their lives. That’s a great lesson for all of us.
