The book shares the most up to date science on IBS in plain terms. Making it an easy to read.

For those of us working in the field, we know how diet and lifestyle can play an important part in managing IBS. However, it’s not always affordable or accessible for IBS patients.

This book breaks down the science, and make it into digestion bites, plus actionable items that patients can use and learn to manage IBS at their own pace.

The book is a labor of love from these 2 trailblazers in the field and one that can serve the IBS population well! ♥️

This book was recommended to me by my dietitian who I saw for guidance with a low fodmap diet to help alleviate IBS. I had no idea how connected your gut is to your nervous system and what affect they have on each other. IBS symptoms make more sense once you know that! My IBS was probably related to POTS/ dysautomonia and PTSD, so going to therapy and processing trauma has helped my symptoms a lot (and low fodmap diet), but I have a coworker who is high anxiety and really been struggling with IBS lately so I gave her this book because I thought of her a lot while reading it. She’s reading it now and I hope the techniques help her too!

My body’s reaction to food has changed over time. It moved from occasional subtle discomfort to “I’m really feeling crappy right now!” When I brought it up to my doctor in a yearly wellness check I was fortunate that she understood the issue. Food triggers was a relatively new concept at that time. My doctor referred me to a dietitian. With her assessment, including eliminating possible other causes, I was able to identify my food sensitivities and manage my gut health. Kate’s blog was fundamental to reinforcing my doctors’ recommendations and understanding the cause and “cure”. This was all about 10 years ago. It’s not that I don’t occasionally have issues, but I know the signs and can realize what triggered them. From my perspective, this book is an updated reference guide. For anyone just beginning this journey, it is also a good introduction.

Would not recommend for newly diagnosed. The theme of IBS underlying cause rests on stress. While it is a trigger, the reader comes away with the view that by merely practicing self care they can personally control their diagnosis. There is great ongoing research in the field of IBS. The authors do acknowledge many other triggers including food intolerances, but the theme is heavy on the role of the patient manipulating their own symptoms through mind over matter. The content is confusing as the cause is not totally understood yet but the control is heavy on personal stress, then a comment on specific food triggers will be mentioned. This leaves the reader feeling solely responsible to control their own destiny.
Science did this with ulcers and then H Pylori was discovered as the cause after years of blaming a stressful lifestyle. Do we understand enough about IBS to make stress the conclusion? Or just one trigger in a very complicated condition? Readers can view this book as not an end all, but one consideration in living with a chronic lifelong syndrome that science and medicine do not understand very well.
