Bought this to replace an aging Motorola, connected easily, worked right out of the box, life was good, a modem and a router, who could ask for more?
Then came the bad stuff.
First it started dropping signal after about six weeks, no wifi at all sometimes, modem worked but wifi was hit or miss then quit completely, tried everything, rebooting, restating, resetting and support, nothing worked it would work for a short time after unplugging but would disappear within the hour, sometimes not at all, no wifi signal two feet away.
Thought I had just bought myself an expensive brick, luckily Amazon was very helpful in helping me return it.
I cannot in good faith recommend this item, that’s saddening since Motorola was once known for outstanding products that rarely failed, this item was just a disappointment.

The Motorola AC1600 modem/router for CenturyLink works reasonably well. It wasn’t too difficult to install, but it was not an automatic snap, either. It’s a good think I had all the numbers & info from my CenturyLink ISP that were needed, although the Motorola got most of them correctly. It provided a good, steady connect speed via the ethernet ports/router, but I had a major conflict with trying to use my Netgear Nighthawk to carry the wireless router duties. There was no way to disable the Motorola wireless signal & this prevented me from using the much faster & stronger Nighthawk. The Motorola wireless signal strength was insufficient for our 3-level, 2400 square foot home. The Nighthawk projected into even our outdoor spaces; something Motorola could not do. I bought this unit hoping I could use it simply as a modem; this was not possible, at least not as a modem combined with my Netgear Nighthawk wireless router. Therefore, because of this problem and lack of communication withmy Netgear router, I returned the Motorola. On its own, it’s OK. Not great, but it worked, just not well enough to meet the needs in my home.

I had enough of the ZyXEL modem/routers from Century Link. The modem was my biggest concern and being an ASDL connection there are not a lot of choices. Plus, it was iffy how much help I would get from Centurylink. I was a little worried โ but donโt be, Century Link really doesnโt care what kind of modem you have.
I went ahead a purchased the Motorola AC1600 model # is the MD1600 and frankly, glad I did. Prior to receiving the modem/router/wi-fi unit, I went to the Motorola support pages for the MD1600, downloaded the most recent firmware, manuals and QuickStart guide. I then email support to see if there was anything I would need form Century Link and they quickly emailed back no. If I had any issues to contact them. I also wrote down as much info as I could from my old XyXEL modem/router. I saw that I had ASDL, PoE, VPI, VCI and LLC 8/35. Frankly, I didnโt know what some of these were but wrote em down anyway.
I got the MD1600, hooked up my PC to a LAN port, logged into the modem/router using the defaults and simply followed the easy instructions on upgrading software (firmware). Once completed (it took about 3-4 minutes), I plugged it into the DSL line, restarted the modem, logged back into the modem/router using my PC and it had a connection screen up asking if Century Link was my Internet provider. I marked yes, and it stared retrieving the info it needed. After about 5 minutes it still wasnโt connected. I called Motorola and they said everything seemed ok to them, perhaps Century Link required a user name in my area and to call them. I called Century Link and before they could answer, the modem had connected. I spoke with Century Link anyway, they didnโt seem to care what modem I had. They asked a few questions, verified a few settings that the modem retrieved and send me a help guide in case there were issues down the line. Bottom line โ donโt get too impatient when connecting to your ISP (internet provider) the first time, its retrieving info from Century Link and my download speed is a whopping 3Mb (yes its true) โ give it 15 minutes or so and I would have been connected without any calls.
Motorola help was excellent. Phone was answered quickly, they are based in the USA, spoke clearly and were very professional. Their hours were 7 am to 10 pm too.
The modem is excellent โ I am getting the fastest download speed Iโve ever been able to get from Century Link. The router has a nice feature set with a lot of automatic settings. The Wi-Fi has both the 2.4G and 5G radios that work independently of each other. I can turn either or both on and off with different SSIDโs and passwords. A full feature set is in the Wi-Fi section too. The 2.4G seems to have very good distance for it can reach our barn and inside the chicken coop, both have wi-fi devices in them. The modem is loaded with features โ Iโm very happy with it.
When Century Links service guy was out Saturday, he told me they are upgrading the area. I am so glad the modem and router will work with Century Links upgraded service.

This modem solved my internet issues completely so far. Every few hours with my Frontier provided modem (Netgear 7550) or 3rd party modem (TP-LINK TD-8616) the internet would cut out causing me to wait ~5 minutes before it would reconnect. It’s really frustrating when playing an online game or streaming video. I dealt with this for almost 2 years and finally had enough. I received this modem and tried to set it up with the Frontier information from my old modem but it didn’t work. Every time I tried contacting Frontier I’d get a different set of settings (VPI/VCI) to use with it but they never worked. I found it odd because the TP-LINK I had before required this information and the same info didn’t work with this modem.
Eventually I got a hold of an area field tech at Frontier that gave me a username/password that I haven’t been provided before. After getting frustrated that it also didn’t work, I set the the Motorola connection mode to VDSL with the supplied username and password and I was online right away. It’s odd because I do not have VDSL, I am 100% positive I have ADSL as the TP-LINK TD-8616 only works with ADSL and it says ADSL right on my Frontier bill. Regardless, I am online and I figured I’d share this information with others.
If you contact Frontier and they give you a very long ############@connect.frontier.com with long alpha-numeric password, try setting the connection as VDSL and see if it works. I’ve been online for 4 days now and not once noticed single dropped connection, I hope this lasts.
As for the other features of the modem, it’s not as user friendly as some other ones I’ve used in the past. There are a lot of advanced settings and it’s not the most intuitive to navigate. For 99% of people none of those settings are necessary. The internet works, the Wifi was pretty easy to setup and the range is decent so overall I’m pretty happy with it as long as it keeps working.
