I purchased the AC600 adapter back in June 2, 2014. My intentions were to test it with my aging Netgear WNDR3700 wireless N router, but most importantly to utilize it with upcoming upgrade to Netgear Nighthawk AC1750 (6700), which was purchase recently from Costco. I noticed the mixed reviews, but decided to purchase, as I am a seasoned level 4 tech and figured I could tweak it in both WNDR3700 & Nighthawk Genie interfaces as admin.
Results:
1. Used on 3 different Win 7, USB 2 port HP PC’s with max of 72Mbs connectivity using WNDR3700 router. This is half of what I am able to obtain with older wireless Netgear N600 (WNDA3100v2) wireless adapter, which is steady at 144Mbps and rarely any drops\disconnects.
However, I did no expect much as AC adpaters are not intended for Wireless N routers.
2. Connection with Nighthawk router reflects 433Mbs on my customized gaming PC with USB 3 & USB2 ports on both frequencies 2.4 & 5 GHz, but with sporadic drops averaging about 5- 7 times a day and drops occur like clockwork upon file transfer from\to another node.
This is a major problem for me as this is why I purchased this adapter.
3. Lowered MTU from 1500 to 1492, but no such luck.
I checked to make sure if my ISP was throttling me, but after switching to a dedicated connection, no issues transferring\downloading or uploading of any kind on all PC’s, and I have a AC wireless laptop and no issues with Nighthawk router. Also, speed test with 3 different sources (Speedtest.net, Glasnost & Neubot) and no indication of throttling.
I agree with users who are complaining about the firmware as I have completely wiped out all network entries on 4 different PC’s, uninstalled\reinstalled software (both standalone and Genie), flushed out all DNS entries & IP protocols only to experience same results.
I paid $40.00 less than a year go for the AC 600, which obviously needs a firmware update, but highly unlikely to get one, judging by Netgears history, lacking firmware updates to improve their products.
I am totally disappointed with Netgear to the point I am returning the Nighthawk router as well. Easy to do, due to Costco membership. Netgear took me for $40.00, but will lose out on $140.00 on the Nighthawk, which is not smart business. Their management should pay attention to reviews of their products by those who know better and make the necessary minor (firmware) adjustments to retain their customers loyalty.

Easy to install and load drivers. Seemed to work well at first, but then I noticed intermittent audio stuttering and found the driver for the dongle was using 90% of CPU. Occasionally it would lose connection and become unresponsive – and again, use 90% of the CPU.
Checked and found I was using the latest drivers, so there’s no easy-fix to try next.
I would not buy again.

The adapter arrived a lot quicker than expected, simple to install and brilliant WiFi signal. Highly recommended

Before buying this product, I tried first 2 non-branded ones that claimed to have faster Network speed on both 2Ghz and 5Ghz bands. My desktop PC is in another room away from my wireless router (3-band Netgear with 6 antennas). The first non-branded one was a disappoint; on my current Wi-Fi subscription of 100Mbps, I was only getting 5-7Mbps download speed but at least upload is 25Mbps. I returned the item and bought another one, little expensive than the first one and with good reviews as well. Tried it and same disappointment and ended up returning it. With some hesitation because of some unhappy reviews about this Netgear product and 2x pricey than the other non-branded ones, I decided to try it. And to my surprise, its brand name speaks for itself; it erased all my doubts and its performance is superb — 100Mbps download and upload — and still going. Excellent product!

This WiFi adapter is easy to setup and use and I like it for upgrading clients of my IT practice at a reasonable cost. In the latest instance I used the AC600 adapter to replace a old EDIMAX wireless N 150 USB nub that kept dropping connections even with a strong signal. The Netgear AC600 made my client very happy (and me too) with more than 5X the speed connecting to their TP-Link EAP330 access point.
I downloaded and installed the latest software from Netgear’s site, plugged in the USB adapter which was instantly recognized and paired with the 5GHz band. This client has their office in a building with nearly a dozen access points at 2.4Ghz so that band is pretty crowded. Only a few at 5Ghz which has a lot more channels available!
Bottom line for me is this modest USB WiFi adapter does a great job at a reasonable price. I trust the Netgear brand to deliver a good quality adapter. Because it makes my client happy it makes me happy to and that gets 5 stars from me.

Works well in windows and with Linux distribution. Tried it on Slackware 14.2 Driver is available in Linux and can use the 5G capability as well.
If you dual boot windows and Linux, this product is what I will recommend.

Doesn’t work on Linux but works great on Windows.

**Update** This adapter was great when it worked. It was fast and it kept a steady connection. A major downside was what a major pain in the ass it was to get it to connect after waking a sleeping laptop. You had to do quite a lot to get it to pay attention. And now, as of about an hour ago, it has completely quit working. My computer will no longer recognize it as being plugged in, no matter what USB port I put it in, even after a reboot. So now I have to go buy a new one, and it sure won’t be another one of these.
After fiddling around with a “best seller” adapter that was a nightmare, I returned it and got this one. What a huge difference! Pretty sure both use the same Realtek drivers, but this one actually functions. I get 5Ghz connection with consistent stable speeds pretty close to our internet package max speeds (there are issues with the connection totally unrelated to the adapter) The only downside to this one is occasionally after waking my laptop up the connection is dead in a way that means unplugging and replugging the adapter in. (even with the “let windows put this device to sleep when not in use” option turned off) I can deal with that.
Keep in mind that when you do the “standalone” install, it still installs the “genie” software. As far as I can tell the only thing “stand alone” means is that the genie software just doesn’t manage the connection, letting the native Windows wifi manager to do it. I wish there was a way to totally avoid the genie software installation completely.
