I live in a rural area in a 6000 square feet home. Being in a rural area means I have no choice but to use satellite internet, which is super slow. Like snail speed slow. My internet provider advertises internet speeds up to 10 Mbps download and 1 Mbps upload. Often times the internet is slower than this advertised speed.
I always assumed that I couldn’t cast Netflix to my TV’s chromecast or watch youtube videos without interruptions because I have a slow internet connection. Turns out that was not the main problem. I was just too far from my router so the connection wasn’t strong enough. Due to the way the house is, the router had to be placed in the basement on one end of the house rather than on the main floor near the centre of the house.
This WiFi extender solved the problem and I’m so happy that it was so simple to set up. I originally set it up to extend both the 2.5Ghz and 5 Ghz channels but that was still super slow. It was basically not usable. Once I switched it over to the fast lane mode to combine the 2.5Ghz and 5Ghz channels to extend just my 2.5Ghz channel, the problem was solved. Now I get decent internet connection from even the other end of the house. Before there was no connection at all on the opposite end of the house.

I tried to use this to extend my wifi signal to a smart TV in my bedroom (about 30 feet through two walls). Bottom line: it does not work in this configuration.
After an excruciating three hours on their support line in India (with significant language barriers, and two dropped calls), Netgear finally concluded that it would not work for this service and suggested that I return it.

Update Dec 28, 2020: After years of owning this extender I’ve come to realize it’s not that powerful given I even hooked it up via Ethernet so I’d get optimal performance. There’s still plenty of dead/low signal areas in my house despite being installed in a centralized location. I’d recommend a true mesh system.

After much research and reading a ton of reviews I decided to give this extender a try. I’ve always been leery about getting an extender as I continue hearing that the overall performance of these types of devices tend to be quite low compared to a wired access point. The install/setup was extremely easy to do. At first I had both 2.4G and 5G bands serving wireless accross my house. Coverage was excellent and the overall performance was decent. I decided to give Fastlane a try (it’s an option in the settings). Performance almost doubled by setting my connection to my main router to 5G and serving 2.4G wireless to my clients. Overall I’m extremely satisfied with this product. I only wish switching between this extender and my main wireless router wouldn’t require setting up a second SID name. (Currently you end up with 2 AP’s. ex: MyMainWifiName and MyExtenderWifiName)

I bought mine used locally.,,,, On seting it up I pressed the WEP button to connect to my WIFI….. I then downloaded the Netgear Genie free. This when run allows you to rename it select and modify everything. I set it up as an Extention of my main WIFI router name. The signal is very strong throughout the house. Just what I needed I now also have it hard wired to a computer works great. No signal loss in speed tests I have made.

Provides a good strong signal and works reliably if you have it hardwired to your modem/router (which I did for over a year), but as a wireless extender it is glitchy and unreliable. If I had tried it as an extender originally I would have returned it…
I have been trying to use it in “FastLane” mode for months, connected to my provider’s wifi modem on the 5GHz band and then re-broadcasting on the 2.4Ghz band. I’ve turned off 2.4 on the modem to reduce interference and have had my modem upgraded and replaced twice, which didn’t help. Any devices close enough to the modem I connect directly via wifi or ethernet and have no issues. Devices further away are connected to the 2.4GHz band through the extender and speeds are fine when initially connected, but they inevitably lose internet connection every day or two.
They stay connected to this extender, but internet stops working through this extender for all devices (laptops, phones, chromecasts, rokus, etc.). I can disconnect/reconnect or restart the devices and it makes no difference – the only thing that helps is to restart the extender constantly. I’ve finally bought a timer plug that turns the extender off once every night, which helps a little, but shouldn’t be necessary, and I still have to restart it manually a few times a week.
I’ve searched forums and seen many reports of the same problem in this netgear family of extenders, but never a response or fix from netgear and I haven’t been able to find a solution. Unless you plan to use it hardwired to your modem, I would recommend avoiding this extender and spending a little more on a wifi mesh network instead – I’m giving up on it and a mesh system will be my next purchase instead.

Works as advertised. Occasionally, we get some weird connection errors – specifically from Nintendo devices – that have only happened since we installed this device. We resolve it by powering down the Netgear extender, rebooting our internet router, reconnecting the Nintendo devices (always connect first try) and then restarting the Netgear extender. Have to do that maybe every month or so. Have to power down my crappy ISP router that often anyways.
Before we got this, I could walk out the door onto my deck and drop my connection. My son’s bedroom is literally 15 feet from the router (straight line) and he would drop. Installed the Netgear extender. I walked out on the deck – full bars on iPad, walked to the property line (40 feet) – full bars. Walked on to my backdoor neighbour’s front yard, and then crossed the street – 2 of 3 bars on the iPad.
I have the Netgear extender upstairs connected via WiFi. The delay is negligible. I have not hardwired it into the router and done a comparison because, as I said, the delay through WiFi is negligible.
