Not bad.
Neku –
A dry, but dense overview of 19th century European history.
Diane Ferguson –
Very well written. I am using it for an online course with Oxford University.covers the material required.i would highly recommend this as required reading for this era.
Pictomaniac –
I purchased this book as the text for a course I have not yet taken (Scheduled to start in late August.) I am sure it is a comprehensive, excellent book of the period. Print is small, margins are small. But this gives a smaller book.
Sam Wilson –
This is an awful book, with terrible incoherent writing. The guy starts sentences with one subject, and finishes them with another:
โThis conservative society was an overwhelmingly rural world.โ
โAlthough not a closed caste in most parts of Europe, the power of the nobility was grounded in hereditary privilegeโฆโ
Paragraphs are written with no flow of thought. They recount jumbles of vaguely related facts, with no coherent sequence of thought and certainly no sequenced development of an idea. The author seems to have data-dumped paragraph-sized chunks of vaguely related notes.
Pointlessly convoluted sentences concatenate multiple vaguely related facts, often leaving the resolution of the opening thought dangling, subordination after subject-changing subordination, till the end.
This is an awful book. Not worth the effort to finish.
Would not buy again.

Just what we needed for my daughters class. Good condition

I love history, but this book was too hard to follow. The text went on and on with long sentences and complex concepts presented in long drawn out paragraphs. I feel this book was written by European scholars for overly educated people. I will keep looking for a history of 19th century Europe written in a clear style that gets to the point. I’m sorry, but I couldn’t finish the book.

A very dense book, great if you want lots of information and event narration in one tome. Whilst I prefer more spread out and country-by-country or event monographs, it’s a really good introduction if you want to know the basis of a given event. Naturally, as is the case with most English historical books, bar Norman Davies, the author seems to place a blanked out, vacuum between the German-speaking states and the Russian Empire, with a mere mention of the Great Polish Uprising of 1848, or the November and January Uprisings. That being said, for a Western European-centred history degree or mind, it’s not a bad deal.
