Not writing much of a review here. Just giving it my 5 stars – for both seasons 1 and 2. I first became aware of the series from some of the TV ads but I didn’t pay much attention. I DID glimpse Robert Carlyle in those ads and I thought, “oh darn, HE isn’t in ANYTHING bad but I am NOT going to get HOOKED on a tv show!” Then, I was channel surfing here and there, and caught a few bits and pieces of the 2nd season. That was enough to get me a little curious and I went online to watch some season 1 episodes to understand the story better. Well. If the first scene of the first show of the first season doesn’t grab a person by the shirt collar, I don’t know what will! –Charming’s flowing cape, his horse’s thundering hooves, the dramatic landscape, the driving, suspenseful music: you just KNOW a thrilling, epic story is in store — and it is!!! :o)

The writing, casting, costumes, sets and acting has all been so good. –And the CONSISTENCY of the quality has been amazing — so much so that I honestly don’t know how they’ll be able to maintain it – I hope they do, but seasons 1 and 2 were so good and so fun that if they AREN’T able to maintain the quality and creativity, what they’ve given us already has been enough to make me a Kitsis/Horowitz fan for life. WOO HOO “Once Upon A Time”!!! :o)

[A word for fellow fans: I write this after the latest episode, S2E18 “Selfless, Brave and True” has aired. WHAT’S going to happen with Belle and Gold?!?!? –SOOO romantic, but SO doomed! I want it to work out so badly, but HOW is THAT possible?!?!]

A problem this show can have is that it has too many characters and sometimes that’s a bad thing. This season we’re introduced to the character that, from what I’ve read since I got into this show three years ago, has divided the fan base: Killian Jones aka Captain Hook. I’ve personally enjoyed the character and seeing him develop from a pirate with a thirst for revenge to where he is now. I just wonder why bill him as a recurring guest star just to bump him to main character status mid-way through the season. Granted Ruby got the bump from recurring to main but nothing is done with her. She gets more to do than Archie got in season one and yet she has less to do. I honestly don’t know what the plans were for her character but after she regains control of her wolf form, she gets pushed to the background. I’ve read that there was supposed to be a thing between her and Dr. Whale but I never got that impression. Belle also becomes a main character (for better or worse) but her whole thing is deciding whether or not she’ll take Gold back only to lose her memory halfway through (not much is done there either) only to get it back in the finale. I like Belle but I’d like to see her separate herself from Gold. Still waiting on that.

We also get this season, who is still unsurpassed in my eyes, the best villain the series has had, Barbara Hershey as Cora. After only one appearance in season one, I was hoping to see more (besides flashbacks) and was excited when she popped up at the end of the second episode. She’s cruel, heartless, power mad, and more manipulative than Regina could ever hope to be. She’s a character one should hate for all the terrible things she’s done done to her daughter and others. Yet I love the character for it and I’m always excited when I find out she’s coming back! I don’t what it is about Hershey’s performance that draws me in but I was bummed when she was killed off. Sadly we also get the worst villains of the series in Greg and Tamara: two halfwits who want to destroy magic on the basis it’s unholy and report back to the “home office”, something that’s hugely underwhelming when it’s revealed who they work for. It’s also a shame that, after her three brief scenes in season one, Maleficent returns but as a crappy CG zombie. I know Kristin Bauer was on True Blood at the time, and it does at least give an explanation as to how the character physically returns in season four, but what was the point? Especially when she’s defeated off screen anyway.

I’ve heard, but can’t confirm, that the season was supposed to be headed in one direction but after they got the rights to the Peter Pan stuff, everything was changed. I can kind of see it since there is a lot of meandering about after Cora’s death (who wasn’t supposed to get killed off when she did) so they could get to Neverland but from Emma and Snow going through Jefferson’s hat to everyone boarding Hook’s ship and sailing to deal with the not so dire threat of Peter Pan, it was still an enjoyable season.

Once Upon a Time has become the most original and moving fantasy on television, reinterpreting the old fairy tales yet remaining true to their message of hope, courage and grace under pressure. The residents of Storybrooke Maine are fairytale characters who have been enchanted and transported into our world with no memory of their lives in the Enchanted Forest. Emma Swann, daughter of Snow and Charming was sent away before the curse struck so she could fulfill her destiny of breaking the curse. The first season alternates between the present in Storyville and the past in the Enchanted Forest, retelling all of the tales that we love so much.

In the second season, the curse is broken, but a new curse has taken its place, trapping the residents of Storyville, with their memories, but unable to leave. Snow and her daughter Emma are now trapped in the Enchanted Forest looking for a way back to Storyville and a way to break the curse. In this episode, we learn more about Regina and how she became the evil queen. As with many villains, it turns out to be a sad story. Victor Frankenstein also makes an appearance in the past and the present, twisting the knife one last time for Regina. Meanwhile, Snow and Emma fight ogres, unmask Lancelot and search for a portal.

Watch Once Upon a Time, start with the first season and keep going as this reinvention of the classic tales is enchanting, well written, well acted and all of the production values are superb. In particular, the costumer and set designer must be having a field day of fun. Just wonderful.

I love Once Upon a Time because I love fairytales and happily ever Afters. Except in once upon a time they have to fight for there happy endings. And not all the fairytale characters are as good as they seem in the books, they got a bit of an evil side to them!! 😂

Story Tales Turn your brain down, relax and enjoy the imagination of the writers and everyone else having to do with making this show. It does go back and forth in time a lot but once you get used to how the story line process works you don’t notice it. And the stories are NOT what you always think they are which makes it interesting. Just a bit of fun and a good binge.
