Mealworms are expensive and I wanted to keep the squirrels away from eating them all and this did the trick. The bluebirds, catbirds and others eat easily. The opening/filling mechanism is clever but I have had problems with the hinge coming apart and it is difficult to fix permanently.

Update 2: nachdem ich die Würmer per Hand rausgezupft habe, damit die Vögel die Leckerbissen besser wahrnehmen können, wird die Säule jetzt akzeptiert. Was leider immer noch bleibt, ist die schlechte Qualität, aber ich gehe wieder auf 4 Sterne hoch.

Update 1: nachdem das Teil jetzt seit knapp 10 Tagen hängt, habe ich festgestellt, dass kein einziger Vogel sich dort Mehlwürmer holt. Die gleichen Mehlwürmer in einem anderen Futterspender bzw. auf den Boden gestreut, gehen weg wie warme Semmeln, im Perky Pet werden sie einfach nicht angerührt. Das macht das Ding einfach unbrauchbar und deshalb gibt es auch nur 2 Sterne.

Ich habe nach einem guten Futterspender für Mehlwürmer gesucht und bin auf den Perky Pet aufmerksam geworden. Der Spender ist auch wirklich gut durchdacht. So kann der Boden zur Reinigung relativ einfach entnommen werden und das Nachfüllen der Mehlwürmer ist über den schnell und einfach zu öffnenen Deckel möglich.
Die Qualität an sich ist aber (besonders bei dem Preis) grenzwertig. Der durchsichtige Futterzylinder ist aus dünnem Plastikmaterial (dünner als eine normal PET-Flasche). In dieses dünnwandige Material ist der Boden eingesetzt und ich hoffe, dass das nach mehrmaligem Reinigen auch noch hält. Der rausnehmbare Boden ist eigentlich eine tolle Idee, aber die beiden Haken, die in die Aussparungen des Zylinders greifen, sind – wie der Rest des Bodens – aus Plastik. Als ich den Boden für die erste Reinigung entnommen habe, habe ich schon bemerkt, dass diese beiden Haken am Ansatz weisslich verfärbt sind, was ein Anzeichen dafür ist, dass das Material bereits jetzt schon stark strapaziert ist. Ich bin also sehr gespannt, wie lange die Haken halten.
Und der Hinweis auf dem Boden, dass das Material Bisphenol A (kann zu einer Schädigung des Erbgutes führen) enthält, ist zwar offen, aber nicht wirklich beruhigend.
Für die Funktionalität (Befüllen, Reinigen, Futterspender) gebe ich gerne fünf Sterne, für die Materialwahl und die Verarbeitung ziehe ich einen Stern ab.

Nearly all plastic construction; only metal is the hanging wire.
Base held on by two plastic tabs; be careful not to over stress them if you decide to push them in to release the base from the main tube.
Feeder is a bit lightweight both in construction and in feel; clear plastic main tube thin and flimsy, if I get 3 years out of it I will be pleased.
Worked as expected; careful positioning needed to encourage birds to feed.
Nice to know; made in Canada, deep base and recessed feeder ports keeps contents relatively dry, birds feeding from it are Starlings, Sparrows, various types of Tits.

My backyard birds won’t use this feeder! I got it for mealworms and they barely fit through the holes. I will probably end up trying seed in it. I don’t know if they just don’t want the mealworms, if the mealworms are too difficult to get out, or if they don’t like the feeder at all. They come to all the other feeders and have eaten dried mealworms from the ground that I put out in hopes that they would then figure out the feeder. This thing is plasticky and junky. One of the feeder slot covers keeps coming off. Should have spent a little more to get something better.

We were looking for a mealworm feeder that better protects the mealworms before they are eaten, was easy to clean, and could hang from any feeder pole. The Perky Pet feeder seemed just what we were looking for. However…
Including the Perky Pet Mealworm Feeder, we have 5 different mealworm feeders in our backyard. All four of the other feeders are different in design from the Perky Pet. Once we put the Perky Pet feeder up and filled the other feeders, we noticed that the other feeders were all consumed in a few days, but no food was removed from the Perky Pet. In fact, we’ve observed very few birds even landing on the Perky Pet. After the other feeders were empty, birds did start to eat the food in the Perky Pet, but at a very slow consumption rate. Once we put food back in the other feeders, consumption from the Perky Pet stopped.
So, our conclusion is that though we like the design of the Perky Pet, the birds do not share our appreciation.
FYI. Our primary consumers of mealworm are Blue Birds, Carolina Wrens, and Northern Cardinals. Occasionally, a Tufted Titmouse will also eat.

I psent a fortune on other bluebird feeders, but this one is the best! It’s inexpensive, easy to clean and with a baffle, animals don’t get into it.

Bluebirds, yellow-rumped warbler, carolina wren, and mockingbird are very happy with this. Took a few days, but our curious wren found it first and the bluebirds followed a day or so later. Warbler was right behind, and it took several attempts before our dominant mocker found out how to fit on it AND get a dried worm!
