We have nesting hummingbirds about 150 yards from our porch, where we have two of these RED (really red!) feeders. Our Sit-and-Sips see a lot of traffic during the day, particularly when the younglings have hatched. These feeders are easy to fill and attract many hummers during the day. Unfortunately, the feeders must hang in direct afternoon sun, so the nectar can spoil easily. The bright red and yellow feeding ports can prove difficult to clean, even with hot, soapy water, and they can have a tendency to leak nectar. But overall, they bring joy to our days and laughter to our table.

I bought this feeder to prevent the bees from taking over but it was barely functional. The slightest movement made the liquid pour out of the feeding ports and filled up the cups making it easy for the bees to still get to the sugar water. The hummingbirds wouldn’t use it because they got scared off when the liquid came out. And I don’t mean a dribble, I mean it pours out. Maybe it could work if it sat on a flat surface but otherwise it’s just a poorly designed product.

The birds love the stand in front of each flower but you be filling this thing up every week! For whatever reason it leaks and the ants and bees appreciate the heck out of that. The glass capsule is nice, it doesn’t discolor like the plastic ones do, which they too eventually leak, but this unit leaks immediately. Best you make your own nectar, otherwise you’ll go to the poor house using commercial nectar with this unit

So I ordered this feeder in spite of previous reviews about leaking. Initially it worked great, but sure enough, when the sun heated it up it started dripping. At first some Teflon tape around the threads did the job. But after continued use it started a slow drip again. So I went to the o-ring at the base of the threads fix and that is working so far. It’s a shame that this version leaks because I really like the improvements that the company made over the old version (wide mouth opening, red glass, ant trap). It really is a very sturdy feeder and the hummingbirds are very attracted to it. They now just need to make the seal a little more air tight to stop the leaking issue.
Update – ok so all of my efforts to stop this feeder from leaking have proven fruitless. It continues to drip all over our side walk, attracting ants. The company needs to listen to its product reviews and fix this issue. Rating reduced from 3 stars to 1.
Update 2 – called Perky-Pet customer service and they were very helpful and understanding. I spoke with Megan who provided me with an email address to obtain a replacement feeder. You need to provide a screen shot of your Amazon receipt, your issue with the feeder, your shipping address and phone number. I got a response within 24 hours stating that my new feeder is on its way and will arrive in 3-5 business days. The email is Consumers@woodstream.com. Their customer service is top notch. I’ll update my review again when I get my replacement feeder.
UPDATE 3 – perky Pet sent me a few replacement that I received within 5 days. The new works great! Definitely a design change. No leaking. Seals tight and has all the same new and improved features. C

I was looking for a hummingbird feeder that was less attractive to wasps, and this one seemed like a good choice since the nectar sits below “screens” that are too far for bugs, but accessible to the HB beaks. This seems to do the trick. Additionally, the others I’ve always owned (larger capacity) allow for the nectar to spoil in the heat, whereas a smaller capacity is being drained more quickly so I’m refilling more often – but with fresher nectar. I just make a larger batch and keep it in the refrigerator to refill. Subsequently, I’m getting more birds more often. Cleans easily, doesn’t drip when you carry it inside to refill. Probably 1/2 the price of others I’ve owned, with less successful results.

I have several types of birdfeeders and find these the best. You can put water in the top so ants cannot crawl in. Holds just enough water so the hummingbirds can drink it all before it spoils. Very simple design and easy to clean. I did have one that I bought from a store. It was identical to these except the glass was not red. The loop that you hang it by is plastic. The plastic part broke and I was not able to fix it. I did not use the metal hook that comes with it so that may be why the plastic broke. I had used a wire. I have not had any issues with the ones I ordered from Amazon. But I have not had them very long. I will buy them again .

The red glass is attractive. The bottle with its wide opening is easy to clean. The only problem is it drips sugar water. Could have come with a better hanger as the little s hook comes off too easily.
