Perky-Pet Starglow Vintage Glass Hummingbird Feeder 8132-2

After the many different styles of hummingbird feeders I have tried over the years, this particular base style is the only one that both doesn’t drip and the wasps haven’t found their way into the feeding holes. Even the feeders with the cages don’t stop the wasps, I find them either in the hole and have to poke them out every time I clean it (gross) or they end up right through the hole and into the actual feeding solution.

I will never go back to a different style. Heavy duty glass holds up with all temperatures and the vivid red attracts the birds so I can feed them a clean, dye-free solution.

I’ve had this feeder for over 2 years. It hangs in my backyard under an awning over my deck… As a result it’s not really exposed to rain. I recommend you keep it covered if you can to minimize rust or from water leaking into it and also keep it shaded from the sun. I boil one part sugar to 4 parts filtered water to make the hummingbird food.

PROS:
-Sturdy glass and metal
-Pretty
-Attracts the hummingbirds
-Easy to clean
-No leaking

CONS:
-The red coating on the glass bottle is susceptible to peeling however mine is 90% intact after two years (I attribute that to the awning above to protect it from most elements
-Small speck of corrosion under metal plate and a tad around the flowers but has not grown since I started oiling the metal.
-I feel bad there is no perch for the birds to sit on while they eat. Who wants to run and eat? Next one I get, I’ll try the kind with the perch.

TIPS:
-Wash in cool water. I found the glass coating would bubble when i used hot water. I used a bottle brush and toothbrush and dish soap to clean it.
-Try to hang under an awning if possible to minimize exposure to the elements (rain, sun)
-In warmer weather, make smaller batches of nectar to replace it more often. From what I’ve read the bacteria will grow faster in the heat so I want to make sure it’s fresher for the birds.
-To minimize rust, make sure you dry it completely after you clean it paying extra attention around the holes of the flowers. Dab it good with a paper towel and get under the flowers too. Make sure the lip of the bottom plastic plate is completely dry as that is where the metal piece will sit. I also put some organic olive oil on a paper towel and rub it on the metal parts to give it a coating especially around the flowers and the edges.

I already had one of these feeders from a few years ago & I love not only the design & colors but also the quality! I also like it because I don’t have to fill it to capacity to be effective. I change my nectar every 2-3 days so I only fill it enough to insure the base plus an inch in the bottle will be filled when hung. I do wish the feeder had a perch for hummingbirds to rest on while eating but they don’t seem to mind! Hummingbirds are using it all day long! I highly recommend this feeder!!!
I purchased a new one this month & the red was even brighter! So I ordered 3 more to replace a couple of beautiful feeders that require a lot of nectar to be effective yet I never see hummingbirds use them.🥺

Bought two of these to replace the cheap plastic feeders I’d been using, and it took the hummingbirds mere minutes to figure it out – they love it. MUCH easier to keep clean, and none of the leakage that the cheap ones had dribbled all over the porch. One of the two feeders was badly packaged and looked like it had been squashed in transit, breaking the glass at the top where the hanger attaches, but on contacting the seller I got a hassle-free replacement that arrived in mere days and was in perfect condition.

Update: This morning (9/21/17) I found the replacement feeder on the porch, broken at the same place as the previous one (the glass rim around the hanging bale, sugar syrup everywhere. While the birds have been super active this week, I don’t think they’re heavy enough to knock it off the hanger (the feeder barely sways when a bird is feeding from it). I’ll be returning this one, too, once I clean up the syrup and the ants who are swarming all over the porch. 🙁

This feeder is absolutely perfect, and the hummingbirds love it. The top of the base covers the bottom (rather than vice versa as on some feeders), which is terrific for keeping ants and bees out. It’s a beautiful shade of red glass, just as shown in the picture, and it’s a bit smaller than the last one that we had that looked like this, but we like it better – less food is wasted when the sun shines on it and eventually ferments the sugar water. We change it out either daily or every other day, depending on how much sunshine it’s been exposed to. It is very easy to clean (a baby bottle cleaner works really well for the interior), and disposable mascara wands work great for the feeder ports. Exactly what we wanted.
