Great sounding and looking turntable, however the combination of 1) the platter & plinth being made of lightweight materials, 2) there being 3 feet rather then 4, and 3) the feet not being ‘grippy’, can cause problems in use. in other words you have to be careful when opening and closing the lid and changing speeds, becase it can cause the turntable to tilt or move quite easily.
It’s dificult to know if/how much these things will bother you until you are faced with them (by which point you’ve already bought the turntable) and to be clear, I think these are probably common issues with all budget turntables.
You can correct these things, obviously, but adding weight to the plynth, making the feet more grippy and upgrading the platter all cost money and you probably want to weigh up the cost of doing these things with the cost of getting a more expensive turntable that might have them as standard.

The platter is not just plastic, but as lightweight as possible without it being thin and VERY plastic-y. They should’ve kept the MDF platter for sure. Everything else is a decent kit, it’s really too bad Pro-Ject replaced their entry-level MDF platters with these molded plastic cheap thing.

So Pro-Ject’s new entry level turntable is a sensational performer. I was after a second turntable for my budget system iny man cave (Audiolab 6000a, Q Acoustics 3020i plus a Sonos Connect). The amp has a really good phono stage so I was able to go for the base model at ยฃ199 in white. I had tried a Fluance RT81 but, despite being a beautiful, heavy beast of a machine, it arrived with a problematic tonearm that had virtually no lateral movement due what I can only assume was a damages bearing. Even after being lubricated it continued to skip so it went back
It somewhat soured the brand for me, which is a shame as there was much to like.
The E1 is the polar opposite to the RT81. It’s light, almost too light. Indeed unless you are careful it will slide around when you open the lid. I’ve resolved this with some sticky pads of the type used on cars to keep phones on dashboarda but this shouldnt be necessary and Pro-Ject should look at options for the next version of this turntable.
Where the E1 shines, however, is reproducing music. The stock OM5E produces a wonderful, accurate and engaging playback of vinyl records. The somewhat odd ABS plastic platter is a revelation and offers a weighty presentation that is discernibly better than a steel or aluminium one.
NOTE: in the photo above you can see my E1 with an upgraded acrylic platter from Cherry Audio Accessories. This is a ยฃ60 upgrade and well worth the money HOWEVER the stock platter is superb and you don’t need to upgrade in order to get great playback.
The E1 is a brilliant entry point for a serious vinyl collector. It comes out of the box ready to play (there is a version with a built on preamp if you want to use powered speakers and also a version with Bluetooth if that’s your thing). There’s no messing with counterweights or anti skate, it’s ready to go. Speed selection between 33/45 is via a switch so, even though it’s a full manual turntable you won’t have to move the belt around for speed changes.
This is an excellent introduction to real turntables. in terms of sound quality it’s a step up from something like an AT LP60X largely through that superb Ortofon cartridge.
It’s not perfect, I’d have liked it to have more physical weight to the plinth and I don’t like captive phono leads, though they are, at least, fairly decent quality.
Used with a budget to mid range amp and some decent speakers this will give most people everything they want from vinyl.
Pair the phono preamp version with some decent powered speakers, from the likes of Edifier, and you have a stunning budget vinyl replay system with plenty of upgrade paths (platter, cartridge, amplifier etc).
