 The Qidi Q1 Pro is an excellent 3D printer for hobbyists and 3D printing professionals. Although the build size is a little on the small side at 245x245x245, in my experience, anything bigger results in more frequent print failures due to the failure of the printer to heat the build plate adequately. The build quality of the machine is second to none. This product prints quickly given the current 3D print technology available to hobbyists. What used to take 15 hours+ can be printed in only a couple of hours.
Pros:
* High build quality
* Advanced features for price point (enclosed printer, heated enclosure, high temp extruder, automatic bed leveling)
* Small size allows for use in office
* Fast printing
* Adequate build size for most functional and craft projects
* Qidi Slicer software makes it easy to create the G-Code needed to print your project
* Many filament and nozzle profiles are included that provide optimal settings for printing your project
Cons:
* Uses custom Klipper software that can’t be upgraded by the end-user other than through vendor supplied firmware updates
* Uses a custom screen and screen firmware instead of Klipper Screen
* Custom screen is buggy – can freeze on guided utilities like filament changes requiring power cycle to recover
* Automatic bed level process is slower than eddy current sensors such as Beacon 3D and not as precise
* Location of spool holder is not ideal – a flush side mount or front mounted design would be more appropriate for where 3D printers typically live – on utility shelving where access to the rear of the machine is restricted
* Uses small belt size for motion systems that may wear out quickly for high volume printing
* Bed heater is slow to get to temperature – should use a 110v heating mat and SSR to speed heating up

First 3D printer, for the younger one (just turned 10). Shipping was very quick, saved the birthday. 🙂
Packaging is excellent, you can even lift the (fully assembled) printer out of the box by the plastic lining (it says so on the top).
Setting it up is pretty straightforward, everything is on-screen, calibrations are all automatic.
Print your first layer first, it will immediately show if there is some issue – our first two attempts at first layer tests were both clearly poor, but I suspected that putting it on a marbletop nightstand with a missing caster didn’t help the calibration… after “upgrading” the leveling (coasters under one leg), changing from the included filament to a generic PLA, and a couple of recalibrations later the first layer was printed fine.
Next morning the just-turned-10 owner wanted to print something impressive so he went for the Coin Catcher Castle Tower (w/ auto-leveling still included); took over 4 hours, almost an hour longer than it showed, but it turned out great, see attached photo.
The *official* way to change filament is a bit weird: you need to grab the pipe above the print head and yank it out – yes, with a strong move, giving you a heart attack you are breaking something, but no, this is by design. Next, you cut the filament below, stick back the pipe, pull back onto the spool the unused length, then extract the remaining filament (using touchscreen manual controls) until it runs out.
Unofficial way: just keep pulling back the filament (using touchscreen manual controls) until it is above the print head box then pull it out at the spool. Voila, much easier, faster, safer, and no waste.
Rumor says there’s a free model to print a filter basket to hold active carbon pellets, this can be installed on the exhaust fan from the inside, giving us VOC etc. filtering, but so far I couldn’t find the gcode file…?
It is a great system, very nice manufacturing quality, and using it across the network, including real-time or time-lapsed camera feed, is really-really nice.
I cannot wait to see what kind of future upgrades QIDI is cooking for us, and when will they arrive for this brand new platform. Fingers and toes crossed that they are working on an AMS unit for a later release; that would make it the most popular unit under $1k, for sure. 🙂
