Graphic novels have been the one thing to convince my son to read and I’m so glad for this story as a graphic novel. It has great illustrations and an adventurous story, that my son has gone back and read a few times!

This is great! One of my boys loved reading all of these books and I read them along with him. My youngest son doesn’t like to read as much, and I tried to get him interested in the series, but they were a little over his reading level. But he likes graphic novels, they are a little easier for him to process. I was so happy to see this available. It’s a great way for him to experience some of the books we all love on a little easier level and maybe then he will be more willing to try the regular books.

I bought this as a gift for my husband, and he loves it. Having read it as a kid, he loved being able to revisit the story again. The artwork looks beautiful.
The only downfall was some creasing on the corners of the cover when I pulled it out of the packaging, but I attribute that more to shipping conditions.

The peaceful abbey of Redwall is threatened by rats led by Cluny the Scourge, and Matthias must find the armor of Martin the Warrior to help defend his friends.
This is one of those tales that really is better as text only. It lacks some of the emotional connection, the mystery, and wonder in graphic novel form. You don’t really have time to get to know the characters like you do in the text version (for example, when Matthias and Cornflower are paired at the end there’s no build up at all and it feels like an arranged marriage, whereas in the book their friendship is actually built up to that point). For most of the text only version you are left in the dark as to what kind of creature Asmodeus is, but when he’s clearly illustrated on his very first appearance that mystery is non-existent in the graphic version. And I really didn’t feel the sense of wonder or enchantment as the clues connecting Matthias and Martin were uncovered. I also found some of the illustrations of rats, ferrets, and foxes to all look really similar and hard to tell the different creatures apart. (This could have been partly because the illustrations are all in grey scale.) Overall, it just felt rushed and lacking oomph. The best aspect of this I guess is the ability to read it so fast, and I did like the way the Sparra kingdom was done. I also can see this generating more interest in the Redwall series. That has slacked off somewhat in our students in the past couple of years, and given the fact they’ll read anything graphic novel-style, I think this could be good in bringing it back to their notice.
Notes on content: A couple minor swear words. No sexual content. There are numerous battles throughout the story, and Cluny also tends to kill off creatures at a regular rate outside of battles so the death count is a bit high and creatures die in quite a variety of ways. The black and white drawings help minimize the gore aspect somewhat, and usually just a crumpled body is drawn. But some, like the killing of the snake are a bit detailed and bloody.
