I own several very advanced synths, a groovebox and a state of the art drum machine. I also own a recording interface that retails at over $1000. I own Ableton Live Suite. The S1 is the real deal. It is very powerful and easy to use. The user interface is brilliant. If you are looking for a first synthesizer, or you are looking for an addition to your studio rig, the S1 is a masterfully designed synth because above all else it is so easy to use and sounds so, so good. In my honest opinion the S1 is an incredible synth at a great price. I own 4 korg volcas which is what i learned on, but the S1 eats every single one of them for breakfast. You can do no wrong adding this wonderful piece of musical equipment to your rig. For the price (which is very, very reasonable) you can maximize your creative potential. Do not second guess this amazing instrument, it goes toe to toe with every single synth I own without breaking a sweat.

This synth has a ton packed into its tiny package, but I found the learning curve of the shift functions and sub-menus to be too great. There is a LOT to remember when using this thing.

the day i got this bad boy i took hooked it up to a speaker and sat on a cliff overlooking the mountains and just created some magic it was a wonderful experience to be able to have something that is easy to use and portable.

Love the sound, preprogrammed patterns are meh, but it’s great to play on the go or synched up to the T8. 2 octave keyboard, mini keys aren’t much of an issue.
Only down side is the menus are a little daunting at first, but there’s plenty of resources explaining them.

The Aira compact line is great for big sounding synths in almost-pocket-sized packages. Add a midi keyboard and you might as well have (mostly) the big instruments they’re based on. The S-1 is the greatest example of this with so many controls over the sounds that come from this amazing synth. It has so many options you might need an o-scope to better picture what you’re doing deep in the options and with the oscillator draw/chop feature to make any waveform you wish.
Luckily I also have a Korg NTS-2 which does that just perfectly in an even smaller size.
My 2 favorite Aira’s are this and the T-8 since it has drums AND a 303 bass/acid synth in one package. The E-4 is really fun and the J-6 is great for background chords but the 1st two models give you the most to play with.

The value this device represents is astounding. The sheer amount of music genres you can cover, plus the excellent sequencer, plus the extra 3 voices, plus the outstanding built in effects, plus the line level mix passthrough, the built in batter that’s RECHARGEABLE, the midi passthrough, and on top of all of that, sounds that are oscilloscope matching perfect to the synth it’s based on. This might be the best piece of gear Roland has made since the TB-3. Yes you should have one. There are 100 reasons you should buy one right now. For 200 dollars you could just chain it to a 303 as a second sound source and make the most astounding acidhouse. Or chain it to a J-6 and add four more voices to your chords. Or just use it as the outstanding synth it is.

If you were used to the SH 101, this synth is capable of giving you the same type of sounds and more. Having owned an SH 101 over 20 years ago, I can confidently say that this new synth is a fantastic addition to my collection.
The sound quality is remarkable with a fantastic signal-to-noise ratio. It truly captures the essence of the SH 101 while offering some exciting additional possibilities for sound creation.
My only minor gripe is that I wish it had little LED lights on the pots, indicating the MIDI CC values. It would make tweaking and fine-tuning even more convenient, but it’s a small issue in the grand scheme of things.
The only real drawback I’ve found is the difficulty in storing and retrieving presets in an intuitive way. It can be a bit of a hassle when you want to switch between sounds quickly during a live performance.
In summary, this synth is a fantastic choice for those who have fond memories of the SH 101. Its sound quality and versatility make it a valuable addition to any setup, even if it could use a few minor improvements in terms of MIDI feedback and preset management.

The S-1 is an amazing synth for its size. It sounds like bigger and much more expensive units and even has more features than some. Highly recommended for synth fun!

The Roland Tweak Synth (S-1) has quickly become the crown jewel of my music production setup, and for good reason. This compact powerhouse packs a punch that belies its size, delivering a sonic palette that’s both rich and incredibly versatile. From the moment I unboxed it, I knew I was in for something special.
First off, the build quality is what you’d expect from Roland – solid, with every knob, button, and slider feeling both sturdy and satisfyingly tactile. The design is sleek and intuitive, making it a joy to explore and tweak sounds on the fly. It’s clear that Roland has put a lot of thought into the user experience, blending traditional synthesis with modern functionality in a way that feels both familiar and innovative.
But let’s talk sound – the heart and soul of any synth. The S-1 delivers in spades, with a range of presets that showcase its capabilities right out of the gate. From deep, growling basses to ethereal pads and cutting leads, every preset is a starting point for exploration. The real magic happens when you start tweaking. The synthesis engine is robust, allowing for deep sound design that can cater to any genre, from EDM and pop to ambient and beyond.
The feature that sets the S-1 apart for me is its portability. It’s compact enough to fit in a backpack, but don’t let its size fool you – this synth can easily become the centerpiece of a live performance or studio session. The onboard effects are top-notch, adding depth and dimension to the sounds without the need for external processing.
In conclusion, the Roland Tweak Synth (S-1) is a revelation for synth enthusiasts. Whether you’re a seasoned producer or just starting out, the S-1 offers a perfect blend of usability, portability, and sound quality that’s hard to beat. It’s become an indispensable tool in my music-making process, inspiring new ideas and bringing a level of creativity and fun that’s genuinely exciting. Roland has truly outdone themselves with this one, and I can’t recommend the S-1 highly enough.
