These adorable little oblong dishes are super cute. They’re nice and lightweight and I love the organic shape to them. They are pretty small, but they do dress up a table setting nicely. Very happy with these and would recommend!

These are lovely little oval serving trays. I have some black & white speckled plates and bowls from roro, and I was very happy to run across these black ceramic trays that will mix and match with them perfectly. These are a good size for a single serving of an entree or salad or for small bite-sized appetizers or desserts. They are quite small so be sure to check the measurements before ordering (11″ probably sounds big, but these are only 5″ wide, so the entire tray is about the size and shape of a hoagie/grinder/sub sandwich). The trays are fairly thick and feel durable but not too heavy and they have a lip to contain juices or sauces. Since they are hand-made, there is some individual variation in size, shape and thickness The glaze is glossy and smooth and has been neatly applied with no flaws (the bottom is left unfinished). They are dishwasher safe, but I always wash them by hand to keep the finish nice. I have lots of ceramic pieces from this brand and I know I can expect quality. The current price of $11.95 for two of these well-made trays is a great deal. The trays were well packaged in bubble-wrap and a sturdy box and arrived in excellent condition.
KEO Kmit –
We host a lot of dinners, so we’re always looking for dishes that will work for our table. These are perfect for a small side dish or an appetizer, which is great. They’re long, flat with just a tiny lip around the edge, and lightweight without feeling flimsy. Having two on hand is just right for a big table, since you can put one at either end and reduce the amount of plate passing.
As for the handmade aspect, they’re mostly smooth, with a slightly uneven lip/edge to give them character without reducing functionality. Gloss and paint are evenly applied. One is ever so slightly smaller than the other, so they stack neatly for storage, too. Personally, I would prefer a matte look, but the glossy coating is very easy to wash and looks quite nice underneath food so I’m not complaining.
We don’t use a dishwasher, so I can’t comment on how well they hold up in one, but I had no problems hand-washing them; the bottoms are unglossed and did not stain from sitting in the sink or anything like that. The packaging says they’re oven-safe at low (less than 300F) temperatures, which I assume is for keeping food warm, so I popped them in the oven for a little while to test this — no issues.
All in all, I like them a lot and I think they will be a stylish addition to our table. I’ll most likely use them for fresh fruit/vegetables, pickles, gyoza, or maybe sliced fish like herring and smoked salmon.
STOPHCHRIS –
This brand makes some unique and fun stoneware, often with vibrant and impressive colors. I’ve bought some other pieces that I liked, so already knew they made great products. These plates interested me as the size and black surface would be perfect for displaying/presenting sushi, as it would help showcase the variety of colors in the sushi roll. Note that only the top of these plates is finished — the bottom is unfinished. I kind of like that look, but if you like your stoneware to be fully finished, these are not for you.
The Great Plate
One of the plates was of very good quality — sleek and smooth throughout with even distribution of the rich, black color both on the surface and around the edges. Really looks nice and is indeed a great choice for displaying colorful food items, such as sushi.
The So-So Plate
While you expect some variation with hand crafted stoneware, the second plate simply wasn’t made as well. There are some spotty areas of cloudiness on the center of the plate, perhaps from the color not being uniformly rich enough. And around the edge of the plate, the finish was very scratchy and even had some areas where the black coating was incomplete, allowing the original material to show through. In comparison to the other plate, while still functional, this one was just sloppy.
Overall, I’ll continue to use these — but if I only need one, I’ll defer to the nicer plate.
STOPHCHRIS –
Thought these were more oval based on the pics but they’re even more thin / elongated than I realized.
Feel good in hand, and really like that they’re microwave safe and dishwasher safe.
They’re going for a less precise “hand made” feel with this set and that’s actually why we wanted them. We’ve been watching too much Pottery Throw Down I think!
One dish is slightly smaller than the other but they do still stack ok.
But this set crosses the line a little from “characterful defects” into “sloppy” and “total lack of care”.
There are bubbles in the finish that you can see unfinished clay through (so it’s not sealed where food will touch).
Cosmetically, there are some massive smudges that are from mishandling.
It’s a shame because, at first glance, we really like the aesthetic and irregular outline.
Got to knock at least a star off for that.
Reasonably priced, still a functional item, but be aware that their claims of “use in restaurant” and “smooth reflective black glossy finish” might not meet your expectations when seen in person.
