The author can definitely write – she builds a beautiful, atmospheric world, she writes characters that aren’t as flat as I know them from that genre, she has interesting ideas. Honestly, I liked this book very very much and I am glad I bought it.

This book is awesome!! I looked forward to reading it every night and would be left a little creeped out each time. It’s got all the exciting glam of balls, dresses, and romance ( less steamy than bridgerton) but has a lot of dark and eerie visuals. Kept me on my toes the whole time and so exciting to read.

I completely and utterly fell head-over-heels in love with this book. This was one of my most anticipated releases of the year and it did not disappoint. It was absolutely everything I was hoping for and so much more. This might not be a completely perfect novel for everyone—or just in general, as literature is such an objective thing—but it was perfect for me. A dark retelling of the Twelve Dancing Princesses, this novel had everything I love; suspense, intrigue, suspicious deaths, ghosts, curses, dark magic, all told in a beautifully eerie and captivating way. I was hooked from page one.
In this novel, we are transported to a manor by the sea called Highmoor where we follow a girl named Annaleigh. She was once one of twelve sisters, but death befalls sister after sister, placing the Thaumus family into a constant state of mourning. This unbelievable string of bad luck has caused the residents of their town to begin whispering about the family being cursed by the gods and they keep away from the sisters in fear.
When Annaleigh starts to experience vivid, ghostly visions of her sisters, she comes to realize that the deaths that have been written off as tragic accidents may not be accidents at all. On top of this, her sisters have been running off to go dancing at lavish balls each night, returning at dawn with their shoes completely worn through. But where are her sisters going? And who are they dancing with? Annaleigh must work to discover what is plaguing her family before more harm can come to them.
This is a hauntingly beautiful tale of a family under attack by an unknown force and the lengths Annaleigh will go to in order to protect the ones she loves. It is fast-paced and absorbing and I could not put this book down—it captivated me more than any book has in a while and it was wonderful. I am a massive lover of dark retellings that are both unique as well as faithful to the original story, and Craig completely nails this.
There is so much mystery and creepiness on every page of this story—moments that will make your heart pound and keep you riveted to each word. It is a complex and carefully woven tale filled with intriguing mystery, dark and frightening ghostly visions, and unexpected twists that constantly had me on the edge of my seat. I became so wrapped up in this story and these characters and I never wanted it to end.
All of the characters in this novel are created extremely well. Annaleigh is a very strong lead character. She’s intelligent, tough, and will do absolutely anything to protect her family no matter how confusing or out of control things appear to be. She maintains her convictions about what is truly going on at Highmoor despite facing disbelief from others. I feel like I connected with her right away—she is portrayed very clearly and is multi-dimensional.
Annaleigh’s sisters are also beautifully portrayed. I love that they feel so thoroughly fleshed out and that they are so realistic and three-dimensional. Mercy is my personal favorite! And the relationships between all of them are done to perfection. They are realistic and believable, making it easy to come to care for them and to be eager to see their troubles end. Each sister’s personality is so vividly depicted and I was so glad to see that they played such a big role in the plot. Annaleigh’s love for them is so strong and the driving force of the story and the love they all share for each other is unshakable.
I actually ended up really loving the romance in this novel. This is something that I say very rarely, but Craig created such a sweet and lovely relationship that melted my heart. I was a little wary early on as a love triangle is hinted at briefly. However, it never actually happens, which I was very thankful for. There is quite a bit of insta-love here, but that is something I don’t usually mind, especially when the romance is well-constructed. Craig does one of my favorite things when it comes to romances in fantasy novels which is truly keeping it a side plot. Never once does it overpower the main plot and Annaleigh maintains her focus on her family and taking care of them.
Though I would have liked to hear more about his storyline and background, I really like Cassius a lot. Cassius is very caring and he and Annaleigh go together really well—you can definitely feel a strong connection between them. I wish he had been in even more of the story. The moments between Annaleigh and Cassius are so sweet and pure that they are a fantastic contrast to the rest of the novel. The progression of their relationship creates small breaks of light happiness among the darkness and sadness in the main storyline and that worked out beautifully. And frankly, it was just plain romantic, adorable, and enjoyable!
Now we come to my favorite part of this novel—the writing. Craig’s writing is completely and utterly beautiful. Her style is so lyrical and enchanting, bringing out a strong fairytale feeling in the narrative. At the same time, her words are haunting and emotional, flawlessly bringing out the darkness of the tale. Loss, longing, love, and hope all run throughout each page. It is a style of writing that is incredibly enjoyable to get lost in for hours.
The world-building is absolutely fantastic. Craig carefully constructs a detailed and intricate setting. Seamlessly blending the tone of the narration into the environment, she creates a vivid and entrancing experience for her readers. The setting is described so thoroughly it is very easy to place yourself there and feel it come to life around you. The atmosphere is dark and eerie—to the point where it is almost tangible—and fits perfectly with the narrative itself. It is extremely clear that Craig put a huge amount of time and effort into absolutely every aspect of this narrative. Her descriptions are so clear and detailed throughout and the way she constructs the Thaumus family’s life, traditions, and backstory is magnificent.
The only minor issue I had was with parts of the ending. Things happen very quickly and I found myself slightly confused at times. Mainly, I wish there had been a little more explanation of the religious/mythological elements—they appear to come somewhat out of the blue. I wish that those aspects of the plot had been developed a bit more and had a bigger part in the story, mainly because I was so intrigued by them. However, the ending, particularly the moments involving the main villain, was properly freaky and intense and it fit the tone of the story perfectly. And that small bit of confusion did not detract at all from my enjoyment of it.
As I’m sure you can probably tell by now, this is one of the newest additions to my list of all-time favorite novels. I connected with this story completely—it was right up my alley. The suspense, the intrigue, the characters, the world, everything was perfect. Erin A. Craig’s writing is so enchanting and beautiful and I loved getting wrapped up in it. I absolutely cannot wait to read more from her in the future! I very highly recommend checking this novel out if you haven’t already.

Esse livro tem uma das capas mais bonitas da minha estante, mas eu adiei a leitura dele por um bom tempo. Tinha alguma coisa que me mantinha um pouco apreensiva, talvez as resenhas negativas que tinha lido. Ninguém falou de nada que me fez desistir de ler, mas ainda assim não esperava gostar muito.
Fiquei surpresa quando comecei o livro gostando bastante da escrita, da ambientação e da protagonista. Sobre a escrita, acho que ela conseguiu ser imersiva, bonita, mas sem ser prolixa. Em alguns momentos, ela acabou tendo que incluir explicações sobre o universo em se passa a história, o que chegou perto de ser infodump. A ambientação é muito boa, mas teria ajudado bem se tivesse um mapa. Primeiro, que a autora poderia tirar algumas explicações sobre as ilhas em que a história se passa, segundo que ficaria menos confuso e chato ter que decorar nomes inventados que não significam nada (e muitas vezes nem foram relevantes).
Ainda sobre a ambientação, acho que a autora conseguiu descrever cenas de terror e medo muito bem, conseguiu passar as sensações certas, principalmente aquela de que alguma coisa não estava certa, mesmo em cenas comuns. Essa atmosfera de terror é ótima no livro inteiro.
Agora, sobre a protagonista. Annaleigh está bem no meio de tudo que acontece, então acho que foi uma boa ideia contar pelo ponto de vista dela, mas confesso que talvez tivesse sido mais interessante estar na terceira pessoa e de vez em quando mudar para outras irmãs. Sei que a ideia era fazer uma releitura de Twelve Dancing Princesses, mas essa quantidade de irmãs foi meio inútil quando elas tinham pouca ou nenhuma relevância, basicamente serviam só para morrer.
Aliás, a releitura é só um mÃnimo, mÃsero detalhe, e isso infelizmente me decepcionou um pouco. Quer dizer, em questão de contos de fadas, esse é um dos mais sem graças que já foram escritos. Por isso, eu estava animada para ver como a autora faria ele se tornar macabro e assustador. Mas as semelhanças com o conto são só pano de fundo.
O fato é que esse livro é muito bom até mais ou menos a metade. A impressão que me deu foi que a autora escreveu até lá e depois mudou de ideia sobre tudo que aconteceria, sobre as motivações e até a fantasia da história. A partir do momento que Cassius tem mais foco, o livro desanda de um jeito desenfreado e até ridÃculo em alguns momentos. Vou tentar explicar melhor, mas ainda sem spoiler.
A sinopse fala sobre as irmãs que estão morrendo e a Annaleigh desconfiar de que não fosse só acidente. É assim que o livro é vendido, então me incomodou bem descobrir a razão por trás das mortes das primeiras irmãs (que acontecem antes do livro começar). Primeiro, porque essa razão tirou a importância delas, mas principalmente porque pareceu tão casual, tão sem sentido em relação a tudo que aconteceu depois, que atrapalhou mais do que ajudou.
Aliás, o motivo que amarra a história inteira foi, para dizer o mÃnimo, risÃvel. Mas até aà tudo bem, até aÃ, eu me faria aceitar e fingir que acreditava e que era o suficiente para desencadear tudo que tinha acontecido. O problema mesmo foi o clÃmax da história. Annaleigh se depara com um problema que seria desesperador, além de muito interessante, que praticamente coloca a história de cabeça para baixo, e eu achei que seria uma reviravolta super inesperada e interessante.
Mas o problema dura dois segundos e o clÃmax se torna outra coisa, que não encaixa de jeito nenhum na fantasia até então do universo e que foi tão, mas tão exagerada, que foi ridÃculo, e eu acabei só rindo.
Não é porque um livro é de fantasia que qualquer coisa pode existir e acontecer nele. Precisa ter uma lógica, um limite. A história desse livro foi conduzida como um tipo de fantasia, de fantasmas, de pesadelos e tudo o mais. Quando a autora começou a introduzir deuses, já achei que era diferente demais do que tinha mostrado antes, mas aà ela incluiu tricksters e uma fantasia mais féerica, além de que o final foi ainda mais confuso e ‘fantasia épica’ e acabou quebrando o encanto meio sobrenatural e assustador de antes.
Ou seja, o final estraga a história. Demais, aliás. É uma pena, porque o que veio antes era muito competente e teria feito o livro valer pelo menos 4 estrelas. Depois de um final bagunçado, sem noção e aos tropeços, duvido que eu vá querer ler outro livro dessa autora tão cedo. E, afinal, não sei se posso dizer que indico o livro.

Let me say first and foremost- I do feel like this is a great book. Overall, I recommend it. I feel like Erin A. Craig came up with a great story. Although it is based upon The Twelve Princesses fairytale, it has a unique perspective on the story. However, I also feel like the book fell short of the true potential it could have reached. I had two dislikes with House of Salt and Sorrows. One issue pertained to the writing. Weirdly enough, I feel like the writing started out great, but became more juvenile towards the last 30% or so, especially concerning the dialogue. I will give two examples and no worries, spoilers will not be given. First example: The main character Annaleigh is very clearly in trouble, with dangerous situations occurring. Poop is hitting the fan (not literally, but figuratively). It’s toward the last third of the book, when the pace has really picked up and getting action packed. She is talking with the character Cassius, and he says to her, “Not exactly…This could get very dangerous, Annaleigh.” No matter what course of actions she takes, it is apparent she is already in extreme danger. She could literally sit on the ground and not move for the rest of the day, and still be in colossal amounts of danger. The dialogue just seems like it is stating the obvious towards the last section of the book, becomes irritating to read, and has the reader just thinking “DUH!” after each exchange. Next example: Another dialogue between Cassius and Annaleigh, where she states, “I can’t imagine wanting something badly enough to summon a Trickster.” Yet, before and after this line, she has stated to him how she could see the allure of making a deal with a Trickster, and would consider doing so herself. If she has been for it, with no new information given, then why would she make a statement such as this? It literally makes no sense. The issues of the dialogue writing (in the last sections of the book) were what bumped it from 5 to 4 stars for me. The strangest part is that it only occurs in the last third of the book, so I found that pretty weird. I don’t know if the author got burnt out at the end or what. It almost seems like the dialogue got written by a different author. My last criticism (where I wish I could make the rating 3.5 stars) concerns the story itself. Based upon the premise of its summary, etc. I thought the antagonists would be ocean based. I had thought it would be more aquatic, which is something I love (mermaids, etc.). It is actually more about gods, goddesses, demigods, etc. It is not a bad thing, I just felt like it was more of a case of false advertising. Due to that, I chose to round up to 4 stars, rather than 3. While I felt like my first critique was more objective, I know this last issue is far more subjective. Despite all this, I am happy I purchased it. I was so enthralled, I even read it almost nonstop! The heroine is so likable, the characters create a wonderful foundation, and the family dynamics fun to read about. There are twists and turns that keep you guessing, trying to figure out the mysteries. I thoroughly enjoyed that element best. It keep you engaged and made me finish it within the course of 2 days. This was the first book I read by Erin A. Craig, and most likely will not be my last!
