Here’s the scenario these 1 star reviews are having: the product will work fine once or twice, it will then “Die” and not respond. The owners think that its because the drive died or it isn’t compatible for macs. WRONG. This drive will work with macs and it actually isn’t dead!!! The problem is samsung went CHEAP and shipped bad cables with these drives! YOU NEED TO BUY A THICKER GAUGE CABLE
AmazonBasics USB 2.0 Cable – A-Male to Mini-B
. Keep the piece of crap samsung gives you and compare it to the amazon cable. Once you plug in the amazon cable watch as it will work on your computer now. Just try it. If not, then return the amazon cable!!!
I purchased this product maybe a year ago? I was able to use this disc drive on my mac and windows computer BUT all of a sudden after a month of use it stopped working. I thought, this is not possible with a samsung product. I love samsung products and never had an issue with them. The drive would light up but every time I added a disc, the computer would not read it or recognize my disc drive. I searched google and a couple results came up that made me think- the usb ports weren’t providing enough power. Yeah maybe if my computer was 10 years old and cheaply made- neither of which were the cases. All my ports are usb 3.0 and at one time worked with my external disc drive.
So then I stumbled somewhere about the cables being the limiting factors. I don’t know why I didn’t think of it before. The cable that this dvd drive samsung ships with the device is not much thicker than angel hair spaghetti! I have a mac laptop and iMac running OSX El Capitan and win 8.1 on a partition. On all computers and OSs this drive worked at one time and then stoppped. I’m not sure why this cable would work in the beginning then suddenly not work, but that’s what the problem was in my case. I bought a thick cable from amazon
AmazonBasics USB 2.0 Cable – A-Male to Mini-B – 6 Feet (1.8 Meters)
and the problem was solved- disc drive immediately recognized and able to transfer data.
I know, I know, why the heck should I have to buy a separate cable to go with a $20 product, made by Samsung for that matter? Well, I don’t know the answer to that question quite frankly. To be honest, this never was an issue until 2 months in using the drive. THIS MAY NOT BE AN ISSUE FOR YOU. You may have a mac/imac and the same OSs and not have this problem at all! I just want others out there to know that IF this does happen to you or if you are buying this as a gift for someone and don’t want them to deal with this, just buy the Amazon Basics cable.

Main points:
This plays and burns CDs and DVDs (not Blu-ray). It has the same read/write specs as the Samsung 218GN and the older Samsung slim burners. The main difference is that the 218GN has MyStory photo- and comment-sharing software (Windows only).
Only needs power of a single USB port, but some devices don’t have enough USB power. They can still use this with a powered USB hub, docking station, or a Y cable (not included).
Windows software for burning is included. For most Windows versions additional software is needed to view DVD movies (free trial software included).
This is plug-and-play for Macs for playing and burning.
For Android, which doesn’t support burning, it reads/plays discs only (see note below).
Chrome only supports reading *data* CDs and DVDs.
Plays DVDs and CDs quietly. Burning or reading data is louder.
Reads/burns dual-layer DVDs and M-discs.
Plays home photo and video files on TVs (see AV mode below).
Different than the older Samsung models in (1) lower power needs, (2) burning M-discs, and (3) eject button on top.
USB cable included.
Reads/writes most DVDs at 8x speed, DVD-RAM 5x, CDs 24x. Reads/writes dual-layer and DVD-RW at 8x/6x. Writes M-discs at 4x.
System requirements
Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8
Mac OS 10.4.6 or higher
Android 3.1 or higher (read/play only)
Chrome (read data only)
Pentium 4 (2 GHz), Atom (1.8 GHz), Core Duo, i3, i5, i7, etc
2 GB RAM (1 GB for some uses)
USB 2.0/3.0
Fuller version:
This is one of the new Samsung slim DVD burners intended to replace the very popular Samsung models that have long been top sellers at Amazon. The other new Samsung model on Amazon is the
218GN
. The product descriptions don’t say, but according to a Samsung representative, the difference between this model and the 218GN is styling and bundled software:
“Function is the same. Cosmetic is different. In addition, 218GN has ‘My Story’ software that you can download all of your posts in Facebook, Instagram, and Google+. if you follow 3 to 4 steps, you will get all of your pictures and comments from your family and friends will be secured in your PC or in a disc.”
MyStory only works on Windows. The cosmetic differences are minor. If you don’t care about the MyStory software, this 208GB is as good as the 218GN.
As a player, this does exactly what I wanted, plays the DVDs and CDs my laptop won’t recognize anymore. It plays them smoothly and *quietly*–important for watching a movie or listening to music.
I’m only using this to play DVDs and CDs, so I haven’t tried burning them, but it does that too, including dual-layer DVDs and M-discs. Others have tried burning DVDs and CDs and it works fine, and the results of a professional test are given below.
This burner is about 5-3/4 inches square and a bit over 1/2-inch thick including the foam pads on the bottom (5.8″ x 5.7″ x 0.55″). It weighs just under a half-pound (7.4 ounces). Very portable.
The housing is sturdy plastic, looks nice, sleek. The tray pops out about an inch and you pull it out the rest of the way and close it manually. It feels a little delicate but like it will hold up fine under normal use. The receptacle for the USB cord feels solid (that’s typically a weak point for portable devices).
The included USB cable, standard-A-to-mini-B type, is two feet long including the connectors, unusually thick and fairly stiff. The mini-USB port is the only port/receptacle on the machine.
Operating systems
For Windows, you may need to install the included CyberLink Power2Go Essentials software for burning, or use your own third-party software. Most versions of Windows require additional software to play DVD movies on any device. A 30-day free trial of PowerDVD is included, and other software is available from other sources. (Free trial versions of PowerBackup, PhotoDirector, LabelPrint, and PowerDirector are also included.)
On Macs, it’s entirely plug-and-play, no software installation required, since OS X includes basic DVD- and CD-playing and burning software.
Android doesn’t currently support writing to discs, but you can use this to read/play discs.
NOTE FOR ANDROID: Android users need to change the AV mode each time they plug the drive in (very easy and quick to do, instructions included). In AV mode, the drive must convert the file structure to a different format, which takes about 30 seconds per GB before the disc is recognized. The delay doesn’t mean the drive isn’t working as it’s supposed to.
Chrome OS doesn’t support playing or burning discs. It only supports reading data CDs and DVDs, such as software installation discs. This and pretty much any other external optical drive can be used for that.
Power needs, workarounds
The Samsung slim models only require one powered USB 2.0 (or 3.0) port, no other power is needed. The Samsung rep says the new models use less power than the older ones, but some tablets, laptops, and even some desktop computers might still not supply enough power through their USB ports.
If you have power issues using battery power, try it with your computer plugged into a power outlet. Some Surface Pro 3 owners have found this works, even if battery power doesn’t.
Try all the USB ports you have before giving up–sometimes they aren’t all equally powered.
You can use a separate powered USB hub or docking station if your device’s USB port is underpowered.
You can also use a Y cable that plugs into two USB ports instead of one, like this one:
1 Feet USB Y Cable – USB A to mini B
. (For the Surface Pro, one branch of the Y goes into the USB port on the power cord brick, the other into the USB port on the computer itself.)
Improvements/changes
The listed performance specs for the new Samsung drives are the same as for the old. The improvements/differences from the older models are:
— Improved power efficiency.
— The new models can burn M-discs (archival quality DVDs). You had to pay extra for that on the old ones.
— The eject button is on top. The older models have the eject button in front.
Speed and quality burning/reading test
A professional review by CDRLabs found that the drive met its specs for max speeds, which are good for a portable burner. (It found access times below average, but they’re faster than the published specs.) The quality, in terms of errors, was generally good.
The average burn time for a full DVD+R or DVD-R was around 11 minutes. It took 16:39 to burn an M-disc. A dual-layer DVD+R DL took about 22:30.
For DVD+R 16x media, the review found that the burning quality was good with Sony and Taiyo Yuden discs, but not so much with MBI (Moser Baer India) and Verbatim. For DVD-R 16x media, it was good with Sony, Taiyo Yuden and MBI, but not Verbatim. The quality for a Milleniata M-disc was fairly good.
The test found that a full Verbatim 52x CD took a little over 5 minutes to burn. The quality was good for all three brands tested, Verbatim, MBI and Memorex.
(The link to the CDRLabs review is given in the first comment to this review–Amazon removes links from reviews but not comments.)
AV mode
This drive offers an AV mode that allows it to be used with Android devices (see note above) and audiovisual devices like TVs that have USB ports. You can use it to view photos and videos in the most common formats used for home media creation. It takes about 30 seconds per GB for the drive to convert the file system before a disc is recognized in this mode.
This is *not* for playing commercial DVDs on TVs–that requires decoding that is done by regular DVD players or computer software.
To use AV mode, you have to switch to it each time you plug the drive in. Very quick and easy to do, instructions are included.
Manual, firmware updates, support phone #
For Windows users the included software CD has the manual and a Live Update program that will automatically update the firmware.
For non-Windows users the included software CD that includes the manual and firmware update program doesn’t work. I’ve given links for the manual and a Mac firmware update page in the first comment to this review. I don’t know if there’s a way to update the firmware for Android and Chrome users, but it’s unlikely there will be any reason to need to update it for reading or playing discs anyway.
The support phone number for this drive is also included in the first comment to this review.
Warranty
There’s a one-year repair-or-replace warranty.
Details
Though this drive works with USB 3.0 ports, it won’t work any faster than it does with USB 2.0. USB 2.0 is plenty fast for this burner’s specs.
The tray opens normally only if the unit is plugged into a powered USB port. There’s a little hole in the front to open it with a paper clip if there’s no power or the powered mechanism fails.
The DVD region code is firmware-based, RPC-2 (not same as region code 2), and can be changed five times by the user.
This is a “two-sheep” burner (a classification used in connection with SafeDisc).

I have nothing to say about this product. It works on my macbook pro and i feel satisfied that works properly without any problem, but it’s a bit slow whenever you pause and resume.
Andrei –

Works exactly as described. I used it to put all old my CD’s on my 2014 macbook pro that didn’t have a drive. It was a little loud and slow, but did the job it said it would.

After purchasing my new laptop, I quickly realized that I would need a cd-drive. With computers becoming thinner and thinner, more features are becoming obsolete or are sacrificed to create a smaller form factor. The cd-drive has fallen victim to the need for a smaller form factor. I had a need to install older programs off of CDs, watch the occasional DVD, and create discs for music for long car rides. Because of that, I ordered this.
Overall, the Samsung cd drive has fulfilled my needs: it is easy to use, maintains a small and easy to carry form factor, and has not failed me. I have been able to load my music onto CDs for long car rides and I have also been able to watch movies as needed. Installing programs has been quick. After a few months of use, the drive has held up very well, showing little to no signs of wear. The drive itself is well built; the buttons provide proper feedback when pressed and it ejects properly. Additionally, it is pretty quiet when in use. The cord provided is good quality and has held up very well despite being placed into some questionable shapes. Overall, I recommend the Samsung ultra slim cd-drive to anyone with a laptop that doesn’t have one built in. I am very pleased with the product and I am happy with my overall experience.
