This is the third SSD drive I’ve purchased and installed, and I’ve been extremely happy with it this far. My first two SSD drives were early-generation Intel drives (80Gb), which have, in all honestly, operated wonderfully for well over two years now, one in a large HP desktop, and the other in a Mac Book Pro laptop. I’ve been following the reviews for the SanDisk disks, which seems to be, on average, significantly higher than most other brands, and when the price on the SanDisk 240Gb fell one day, I grabbed it. I have not been disappointed.

The SandDisk drive physically appears just as it does in the product photos, with a semi-glossy black-and-white case. The form factor appears to be exactly what it should be for any typical notebook drive (although take careful note that some laptop users are reporting that there is a slightly different size variant in use out there on certain laptops that requires a slightly less tall drive; I suspect that this applies to only a small proportion of notebook drives) and has the exact same screw mounts on the sides of the case to attach the drive directly to the mounting sleeve that either your laptop or your desktop uses. The drive is light and makes no noise in operation. Very little heat is generated during operation.

Because this is a 6G SATA III drive, read and write speeds with this drive can really scream. Even if your computer is not equipped with SATA III, the unit will operate at either SATA II or SATA I levels. Regardless of your SATA level, this drive will easily outperform any mechanical hard drive, and if you happen to have one of those new SATA III systems, you’ll see an even further boost. And what do I mean by “outperform?” Well, from my own personal experience now on three separate computers (an HP laptop, an HP desktop, and a Mac Book Pro) boot times will reduce from 30 – 40 seconds down to about 10-12 seconds. Program launch will be nearly instantaneous: no sitting around waiting for a program to start. Click on it, and it IS started. Shut down times can be reduced down to about three seconds, in some cases. (My Mac Book Pro shuts down in three seconds, and my HP laptop does it in about the same. My HP desktop takes about four or five seconds.) There is almost no other way to improve your system performance than by use of one of these solid state drives.

The price on this drive is right, too. It is one of the less expensive models on the market right now, and occasionally, will drop even further on one of those flash sales (which is when I picked mine up). The prices on all these units are finally dropping: the price I paid for this 240Gb model was significantly less than I paid for either of my two 80Gb SSD drives two years ago.

I’ve been building computers for over two decades and have installed virtually ever upgrade possible over that time. Some have incrementally improved performance, some made not too much of a change. But no hardware upgrade I’ve ever performed can even remotely compare with SSD technology. These things are fast, fast, fast, they are completely silent in operation, generate very little heat, and draw far less current than their traditional disk drive equivalents. This means they significantly improve the operational speed of almost any computer, and, if you are installing it into a laptop, will reduce heat output and extend the laptop’s charge time (because it is drawing less current than a spinning platter drive does). They are an exceptionally easy recommendation to make, and these SanDisk drives seem to be an excellent choice.

Okay last week I went from 12 to 24 gigabit ram on a three year old Dell XPS 9000.
It would only recognize 16 gigabit so I made a ram drive with the extra 8 gigabits for my temp files and cache
I was just trying to get Photoshop?Bridge to run better with my raw files being 72MB it has been straining my machine

The ram drive really helped but now I could see that my old 7200 RPM Western Digital HD was obsolete

I bought a 120 and 240 Extreme SSD and used Paragon Software to migrate to the 120 as my main drive.
The software worked without a hitch and with my prefetch, superfetch, restore, and hibernate turned off I was really impressed.

The 240 went in next and again it was really simple to get it quick formatted and up and running as a storage drive

Not a benchmark person but to transfer 80 gigabit of raw files from my external Western Digital Extreme to the new 240 Sandisc was 30 minutes. Then just for fun I transferred the same folder from the 240 Extreme to the 120 Extreme system drive and it was 7 minutes. System Boots up in 33 seconds now from what use to take a sundial to time

Afterthoughts the 120 had the 211 firmware
the 240 had 205 but with Sandisk Utility is was a snap to get it updated to 211 also
the 120 isn’t getting written to at all the ramdisk (superspeed software)
and the 240 are acting as my temp file folder, cache folder, and scratch disks so the 120
dosent have to really write a thing hence not over writing to it which SSD’s don’t like

Used the New Technology Converter Bracket to mount both
into my tower and they are flawless

Windows Experience was a 5.4 for my hold drive The new score is a 7.8

For $ 103 for a Extreme 120 gigabit, $20 for the bracket and $20 for the Paragon Software
    you get a new machine.
Add the 240 as storage with enough RAM to make a ramdisk and u can fly
Since my days with Pentium 4×86 machines I have never seen anything as fast as these for
    the cost

    AMAZING

I have had it for a month now. I stuck it in my laptop and did a fresh install of Windows 7 and it works like a charm. ven though my laptop is SATAII the performance boost is huge. It boots up Windows 7 in 12 seconds (from pressing power to showing the desktop).

I struggled about whether to buy an Intel SSD just because of the brand, but after buying this model, getting an Intel wuld have been a waste of money. SanDisk knows what they are doing, Get this over any other. Works great and relative to other brands, it is cheap!

And yes! it would also be great upgrade for a PC but you can get away running a smaller SSD for a boot drive if you have enough hard drives in your system (I have 5 so a 128GB SSD is fine for my needs!)

This SSD was initially my 2nd choice as I was originally after a Samsung 830 which was priced a little cheaper back then and priced so well that it was sold out almost instantly everywhere, I had spent a week with my order back-ordered with no solid ETA on new stock. So i gave up and decided to order one of these Sandisk SSDs after reading some great reviews.

the SSD has been out for roughly about 3 months according to quite a few reviews but hasnt gathered much publicity until the massive spate of price drops everywhere.

I bought this SSD to replace the hard drive in a rather weak HP DM1 (3200SA)laptop running a AMD E-350. Its a good laptop but its rather slow and can be quite sluggish when there are few windows open and applications running in the background.

Having already put a Crucial M4 in my desktop PC a few months back, I knew exactly what to expect when I installed this SSD into my laptop and it has transformed this little laptop into a rocketship!!!

    ==== HP DM1 USERS =====

I was cautious at first and worried if i would be able to run the SSD at its fully rated speed after hearing many reports that the Sata controller for AMD based DM1s were really weak, but i was pleasently suprised after running a quick ATTO benchmark.

I am getting the FULL speed out of this SSD.

Unlike most newer models of DM1 that came after the 3200 series, mine shipped with a 7200RPM Western Digital Scorpio Black. This made the under side of my DM1 quite warm after prolonged usage or even when i had left the laptop to idle for 30mins after booting it up to the point you could almost feel the heat seeping up through the keyboard. It wasnt HOT ‘HOT’ but it was still very uncomfortable when resting my wrists on the laptop to type as the plastic got pretty warm.

With the SSD installed the issues i was having with the heat have totally vanished. The SSD gets a tiny tiny tiny tiny bit warm, but its not enough to heat up the rest of the laptop like it did previously. I am rewarded by lightning bootup speeds as well as super fast load times from the second I enter my login passowrd to a fully loaded desktop thats ready and waiting for whatever I want to do next.

Added bonus is the SSD makes the laptop whisper quiet! you wont hear it unless the fan starts spinning up. so theres no more humming or clicking of hard drives!

    =====================

If like me you have trouble securing a Samsung 830 – this Sandisk Extreme wont disapoint you!

I had this product for a little over a year now and it performed very well on my Alienware M14x with very fast 4k speeds. It was only until a few days ago that my computer suddenly blue screened randomly. I made disk checks that stopped working not because it ran into corrupt files but because the drive would stop working within 5 to 10 minutes no matter what activity I did.

After verifying that it wasn’t caused by any viruses or loose plugs within the laptop itself, I moved the drive to my desktop to check the disk from there and it determined that there were no problems with any of the files at all. However, within the same amount of time spent moving files from the drive to my desktop, COM surrogate within Explorer stopped working (eventually Explorer as well) and my desktop would experience problems functioning whenever I interacted with the SanDisk drive 5 to 10 minutes in.

Seeming like this drive is already failing when it should outlast my computers gives me doubts about this brand and I cannot give it a good score. Fortunately, the files where not lost and recoverable (hence 3 stars instead of less), but still annoyingly dealing with the drive stopping constantly.
