I realize that the Schwann Sporterra was a budget option when I ordered it but it still fell below my expectations. Here’s why

First off, when I took the bike out of the box I quickly realized that the front fork was installed backwards so I had to unscrew some bolts to turn it the right way around.

No instructions were included so I had to search online for videos to help with the assembly.

The valve stem on the rear tire was badly damaged right out of the box to the point that I had to replace the inner tube in order to inflate the rear tire.

The chain set did not work properly. The chain would constantly rub on the front derailleur and the rear derailleur would often skip gears when shifting. I had to adjust both derailleurs so much before they worked properly that the front shifter cable became frayed and had to be replaced.

The disc brakes were underpowered and took a long time to stop the bike. Even though it was a gravel bike I felt that the tires didn’t have enough traction on gravel surfaces.

Worst of all though, was the fact that the rear rim would constantly puncture inner tubes right where the valve stem comes out. The opening had sharp edges that would could the inner tubes. I replaced three inner tubes on the rear tire before the problem became apparent.

Overall I’m not impressed with the build quality of this product. If I buy another bike it won’t be a Schwinn.

Took a while to get the derailleurs and disc brakes set up. They should have stuck to rim brakes, they’re easier and just as good as these ones. Overall, it’s a bit heavy but once set up it’s a decent ride. Did blow out an inner tube on the first ride, no sign of any nails or spikes so might have been a faulty tube or trapped tube on the rim. Still, for the price gotta say it’s pretty good value.

The bike arrived in a big box, I opened the box and everything was well packaged. Each piece was wrapped for protection. Took about 30 minutes to put together with minimal tools, all i needed was an open end wrench and allen wrenches. Went on a quick ride around the neighborhood and it was sweet. Wen home and tightened everything back up and went on a 15 mile ride. Very smooth, very happy. Rode a little bit of gravel and it did well in the hard pack, once i got to the super loose sand had to get off and walk but that is to be expected.

***CAUTION*** I am 5’8″, if I was shorter this bike would be too large.

    PROS
    – Easy installation
    – Bike came well protected in the box
    – Good looking
    – Brakes needed very little adjusting
    – DeRailleur needed no adjusting.

    CONS
    – Super uncomfortable seat

This is my first bicycle purchase as an adult at the ripe age of 35 and havent ridden a bicycle in over 15 years. My last bicycle was some bmx bike with 20″ wheels and the seat low because i dont know maybe i wanted to feel cool back in the day. I remember having a terrible cruising experience and cramped legs.

I started getting interested in riding and sought out a gravel bike. After looking a bit online and checking out big box stores i found them quite hard to find in my area. Not sure if this bike truley is a gravel but it is advertised as such along side as an adventure bike.

Putting it together was slightly daunting but for the most part everything went in place smoothly despite some reporting bent forks. YMMV on the bike when it comes to defects/issues. I found three fixable issues with my bike:

    1) the front tire was installed incorrectly on the rim. Instead of the tread moving in foward direction of the road it was installed in reverse. I simply took the tire off and flipped it.

    2) the drop bar was installed backwards on the stem clamp. I simply opened the bracket freeing the drop bar and flipped it.

    3) likely to happen on most bikes, brake rubbing. Mine was really off centered especially on the back. I could feel drag when riding. I centered the brake calipers and problem was solved.

Dont want to fix anything? As long as the parts arent damaged/bent im sure any local bike shop could tune up your bike in smooth functiong condition. Despite being very new to this i was able to make the corrections with the help of online vids. You will absolutely need at the very least allen keys and possibly the tire remover tool if you encountered my issue.

The shifters were very easy to use, i cant really compare with better ones since i dont have that experience and they do make a sound when shifting which really doesnt bother me. Peddaling doesnt make all that much noise either.

There is no kick stand. I ordered and installed these off amazon and they are perfect for this bike.

I am 5’4 and a half, initially this bicycle felt too big. The inseam (top bar of the center frame) is very high. I cannot stand over it without my balls getting crushed. My wife said i looked silly standing by it and i subsequently hit the return button. I really wanted to like this bike so i kept messing with it just to be sure. By messing i meant standing by, hopping on, and taking it for a spin. After reading online more about bike sizing, wheel sizes, and what to look for i took it for another spin and i changed my mind and kept the bike. After practicing mounting, dismounting, and getting a better feel i have no regrets and really enjoy riding it.

If your short like me and feel deterred dont be, different mounting and dismounting techniques will help you. I mount by setting my pedal to the lowest position on the side where i plan to start. Tilting the bicycle will make it much easier to get your foot in place. The rest is push, straighten out the bicycle while standing and then while on the pedals lift yourself to the seat. Do it a few times and it will feel more natural. I set my seat to the height where while im sitting my leg is almost completely straight on the pedal near the 6o clock position and my heel is on the pedal not my toes. Pedal normally once the seat is st right height. This allowed me to cycle without feeling my legs too confined by having a lower position. You will feel pretty high off the ground and it may seem scary, i later enjoyed being higher off the ground after a few runs. Its kind of the feeling people get when the buy big trucks.

To dismount if im on a flat surface i slow down and get into standing position before tilting myself with the bike and landing on which ever foot i angled my dismounting position from it helps to dismount at the same position you started from to get on the bike. I then whip my leg over the seat and thats it. Its easier on a uphill such as drive way or even more easier if you find a ledge to stop on such as curb or garden wall.

Could you get a better gravel bike for a similar price point? Probably, but there arent very many options, the mongoose gravel around a similar price point wasnt  available for me and along with the very cheap looking kent gravel bike. amazon is great with returns. Its also a schwinn, yea maybe not the old school schwinn, but this bike looks good and feels solid compared to the bikes i saw at walmart and target. Not hating on walmart or target bikes picked up a few mountain bikes also from schwinn/huffy and they were great.

I took my chance with amazon on this specific type of bike than order from a specialty bike store because i didnt want to run the risk of screwing it up and being charged restock and shipping charges because i didnt understand sizing etc. Amazon saved the day for me with this one.

Id totally recommend for a newbie like myself.

I love the all-black paint job and the sturdy build of the bike. After considering a couple of less expensive bikes, I settled on this one which I think was the best fit for my needs.

June 1, 2021: The bike arrived with the box intact and all parts in good condition.
After reading the instructions, assembly was pretty basic, though I took my time to avoid mistakes. As another reviewer mentioned, the handlebar was mounted backwards on the stem, so I reassembled that correctly. (The tires on my bike were fine). A plus is that the seat post is metal, not vinyl like it says on the Schwinn website Sporterra page.
It would have been a bit easier if the manual had been specific to the bike rather than general for types of bikes.
The bike comes without a kickstand so I added one, but it would be better if Schwinn included one that fits exactly, allowing for cable routing.
The rear brakes rubbed, so I double checked the wheel was set correctly, then used an instruction book from the library to adjust them. As recommended by another reviewer, I took it to a nearby shop to have the brakes double-checked and the derailleurs adjusted.
The seat is okay, but gets a bit uncomfortable after about 40 minutes. I’ll see how I adapt before replacing it. It’s been 35 years since I last rode, so it’ll take some time for my muscles to adjust.

The top tube height is just right for me, but only right in front of the seat; double-check your measurement needs before you buy it.

For now, I’ll round up to 5 stars and hope my experience going forward will keep that rating.

Update March 23, 2022: The bike has served me well over the last 10 months and over 520 miles.
The seat was fine after riding for a while so I didn’t need to replace it. I haven’t had any trouble with the top tube height. I mostly use the bike for urban commuting and errands, plus riding for fun. It’s durable and easy to maintain, even when riding over some poorly maintained roads. The only problem was that a handlebar cap came loose and was lost while riding, so I bought a good quality pair that tightens with a hex wrench. The tires are still good; I check the pressure weekly and keep them at about 65psi.
I’m glad I bought this bike and hope it continues to meet my needs for a long time.
May 31, 2022: This is day 365 since I started riding the Sporterra and it’s been a pleasant year. I only drive once a week now and haven’t bought gas in over 3 months. I just replaced the pedals since one was starting to come apart, but everything else has been okay so far.
May 31, 2023: Since last year I’ve cycled another 603 miles. I’ve had to replace a front tire and tube plus bottom bracket bearings (in the frame between the pedal cranks). Everything else has been okay.
    August 15, 2024:
Aside from normal wear on replaceable parts, the bike is still fine.

I was excited to get this bike, the overall quality was not bad for the price…however, many components were missing.. I did think about going out and purchasing the missing parts, but I opted for a return. It was missing.. Seat post, axel, and brake parts
