Actually needed just a magnet but realized the retractable wand would be great as not to lose in my tool bag. The wand sits up perfectly vertical in the screwdriver spot of my tool bag. well done!

I was in the market for some sort of magnetic pick up tool, seeing as the toolset I purchased to swap computer components were not magnetized (for the better, really). I came across this and a few other similar tools on Amazon, and decided to purchase this one because it was rated at the highest load-bearing capacity (15 lbs capable). I received it in the mail today. I was immediately blown away by the actual size of the thing. Compact, yet nothing you feel like you would break. There is plenty of surface area on the face of the magnet to pick up items both small and large, it is extremely well magnetized, and the geometric sides are magnetic as well (although less magnetized).
I went around my house just picking up every metal object I could think of. The telescopic feature is fantastic, and extends to upwards of 33″. Now that I think about it, this particular model may not perform well in extremely tight spaces, but I bought it for the prospect that it would be able to lift upward of 15 lbs. For now I’d only be using it to recover dropped screws in a computer case that aren’t located immediately around any chipset. I could use it for anything in the future really, which is why I bought this one. So far it has done the job well.
I would recommend this item to anybody in the market for buying something similar. Fair price, and I feel like what I bought will honestly last and not break, unless my intention is to break it.
The only con I can think of is the lack of more detailed description about the tool itself. I do not know whether this is the fault of the vendor or Amazon. It gives its telescopic range as well at the weight of the tool (4.8 oz.). Perhaps if I had known the diameter of the magnetic tip, I may have gone a step down from this particular model. We’ll see how it fares in real world application.

Good weight on the hands, easy to protract. Magnet is strong enough to find tiny sewing nails – good for under the couch or after construction project. Pretty inexpensive too!

Since I can’t seem to hold onto screws this tool is great. can be difficult to navigate around engine area but with perseverance comes success.

Overview
I bought one of these to pick up nails left over from having my roof reshingled. It’s a pretty great tool to have around the house whether you are a handyperson or like to sew. It makes picking up a dropped screw or needle a piece of cake.
The Good Parts
* 15 pound strength magnet
* Telescopes to 30″
* Comfortable grip
* Lightweight
Could Be Better
* Could be longer, but not a deal breaker by any means

I think every tool box, tool bag, and maybe on your person should have a tape measure, a telescoping magnet. a Sharpie, and a flashlight; but that’s just me. I’m not as young as I used to be, and you get the picture. I hate wallowing around like a beached Orca, just to get up to get something that easily could have been close by.
I got this as an add-on item, and am pleased with it. The more I use it, the more I appreciate it. I thought it would be comparable to the ones within the price range at the parts house or hardware store; but it is better. I look at those when I’m at the store and now I think they are crap. This has a better feel in the hand, and is much sturdier than those that I have seen and touched. The telescoping is a bit stiff and I expected that stiffness to loosen up with use. It hasn’t so far, and now that stiffness is one of the things I appreciate about it. You extend it X inches, and for the most part it stays extended X inches.
Do notice in the item description it has a 15 lb. PULL capacity, not lift capacity. I haven’t done any Myth Busters testing, but it will pull that brake caliper from over there to right here. It is good for passing parts or nuts and bolts when my son is working in a wheel well, and I’m supervising from over here. As far as lifting capacity, I don’t know what it would be rated at. I have picked up some heavier things and lifted in the horizontal and it stressed my wrist more than it stressed the telescoping tubing.
My son’s went missing, and I thought I’d get a couple more before mine went missing too. He needs one for his work truck and also for his garage. I almost went with the 2-fer offer (notice the “Size” radio button in the listing), but then among the recommendations was also a slim Tekton one, and there is also a bundle offer of one of this SE, and one of the slim Tekton. One of each equals more versatility. So that is the current order preference for me.
SIZE:
This is about an 1-1/3″ in diameter. It’s not in the item description, but is in the specs tab. You will notice many round items from China or Taiwan listing by circumference instead of diameter. I do not think I have met a single person who wouldn’t use diameter. It is bizarre to me, but might just be a cultural thing. (Excel spreadsheets will offer to plot a “radar chart” and the Japanese love them and think they are intuitive. I look at a radar chart and see an incomprehensible spider web.)
This is about 7″ in length when collapsed. Fits well in corner of front or hip pocket of jeans.
MATERIAL:
Like I said earlier, the grip feels good in the hand. some texture for traction, and a Goldilocks amount of cushion. The shafting is stainless, but I do not know the alloy. It has not flash rusted, so it is not 400-series. (400 has good strength, but it has enough free ferric in it that it rusts and it is still called stainless. Go figure.) The magnet is set in the knurled sheath, and it has gotten some good whacks and is still seated fine.

SE and TEKTON brands:
For the most part, I have been satisfied with these brands. If you are of a certain age, the phrases “Made in China” or “Made in Taiwan” causes some hesitation due to quality issues from the past, or if you want to buy American. Good reasons. However, you’ll be hard pressed to find this at anything near this price point that is wholly sourced from the US; and also anything short of Critical Service, like an oil refinery or gas cracking plant, or a rotary tool’s SOLOOP branded saw blade mandrel*, should be okay with Chinese or Taiwanese metals. [* see my other review about that unfortunate little purchase. It could have gone very bad. I should have read through all the reviews.]
I do have an unrelated ding against Tekton. their deep well 1/4″ drive sockets do not have a recess in the receiver end to accept the detent ball that most socket extensions have, including their own extensions. Odd omission on their part; but hey, if you use those you’ll want a telescoping magnetic retrieval tool to go find that socket!

Easy to pick up small metal things, esp with the long pull out extension. Great for dropped keys. Does not work on coins as there must not be any metal in them. Bought extras for inexpensive gift.

This is the type of tool you will need when nothing else works. Is uniquely designed for it’s function and is well constructed.

Great product, especially for the price.
I use those for picking up nails and screws that I drop around the garage or in the grass after projects. Works perfectly like a magnet should.
Only downside is that the fave of the magnet is a little bit small. It still gets the job done, picking up at least 7 to 10 small nails, but it would be nice to have a bit bigger of a surface.
But, for the price, and the fact that you get two of them, these are a no brainer.

I bought 2 of these, one for myself & another as a stocking stuffer. I tested mine out a couple times & so far it works for what I need. It has a pretty strong magnet on the end. It opened my refrigerator door when I stuck it on there :-). The magnet isnt very strong around the side; which is probably a good thing if you are trying to get at something in a highly metallic area. You may still want to wrap something around the sides of the magnet if you’re trying to get something from under the stove or any other tight spot as it may still get stuck to the metal from the sides. This has a fairly large end on it, maybe an inch or more, so keep that in mind as you won’t be able to use it if the space is more narrow than that. I haven’t tested it out in anything close to the 15lb weight limit, but my refrigerator door test suggested to me the magnet was pretty strong while the telescoped handle seemed durable. Hope this helps!

I like the length and strength of Stick. I am in a wheelchair and at times it’s difficult to pick thing of the ground like pens, key’s remote control for TV and nails etc…
