About six months ago I bought Seagate’s first foray into the crowded SSD market due to its attractive price. This is the pro or enterprise version of the same drive which means it comes with a 5 year warranty and 10 times higher P/E cycles. Of course none of this can be seen on usage of the drive but it is reassuring when you have to operate on your computer (2012 Mac Mini) and have no desire to repeat this process with a failed drive twice over down the road.
As for performance, this drive performs like no other drives in its price range with 550 R 450 W (Blackmagic Disk Test). I’m sure it would test slightly higher on writes but I already had my OSX server back up and running and didn’t feel like shutting off services for a quick test.
In Conclusion, this SSD gives Samsung Pro level performance for almost twice the cost. If I had a need I would definitely buy this drive again.

I purchased this drive at the same time as picking up a SanDisk Extreme 256 GB SSD. I am comparing this drive to the SanDisk and also my Samsung PRO II 256 GB SSD that I purchased late last year.

The Seagate is billed as being tougher than your average SSD (hence the “pro” moniker) with a longer warranty. I can’t attest to how speedy it *really* is because I installed it in a Dell XPS 420 (circa 2008 PC) with SATA 2 on a Windows 7 system. I wasn’t expecting earth shattering speed increases due to the outdated bus, but I am trying to add a few more years’ life to an aging system.

After I installed the SSD, it’s noticeably faster to boot up and programs load faster. With the previous HDD I would hear a lot of ‘disk churning” going on when loading Windows Updates and other system housekeeping chores, but now the drive is silent (of course, it’s an SSD) and more importantly, a lot faster. It’s not Windows 8/SATA III fast, but overall the speed increase is enough that I am pleased with my purchase and I feel I have gotten value for my money.

So why 4 stars and not 5? It has to do with the cloning software. Seagate’s website is poorly organized and it wasn’t readily apparent that you needed to download TWO software packages – one called SeaTools and the other was a SSD toolkit. Neither one was clearly marked as to which one you really needed, and I had to spend half an hour going through the “support” section of their website to locate the software packages.

The SSD toolkit provided a stripped down version of Acronis True Image that did the job as far as cloning the partitions on the HDD to the SSD. It also advertised a lot to BUY THE FULL VERSION, but I’m OK with that as long as the program is actually functioning, which it did. What I had difficulty with after the installation is that it appears that the SSD toolkit somehow deleted my built in Windows drivers for SATA (they no longer appear in the device manager) and I now have a new driver that looks like it’s running the SSD that I don’t recognize. The SSD appears to function normally, but the SeaTools package tells me that it can’t find a Seagate drive on the system. That’s funny, because I have a Seagate SSD as my C: drive, and a Seagate HDD as my D: drive. I can see them just fine, thank you. While that’s not a deal killer, it would be nice to be able to check for BIOS updates, SMART status, etc. on my new SSD.

The bottom line: Good SSD, good price, a bit of an inconvenience on the cloning software, but in the end I have a functioning, stable system – that’s all anyone can ask for, right?

Got the SSD when it is on sale at 199.99 USD, which is a very good price for an entry level enterprise SSD. Both of my purchase work great on my home server and the performance and reliability is great !

Seems to be working just fine. I wanted to upgrade my 3 year old SSD (which I think used to be gamer worthy) with something with more space. After a quick clone, the drive seems to be working fine and there’s no noticeable change in speed.

These drives are really great. This is the first PC I’ve built with solid state drives and man are these things fast. They are easy to hook up and they get auto detected by my UEFI. They also make no noise, so now the only sound I hear from my PC is the processor fan. I will never go back to using a standard SATA drive.

It has been almost 2 years since I had my lenovo ideapad Y400, so I figured it is the time to replace the old mechanical hard drive w/ a ssd for a better performance.

Easy installation procedures for migrating system OS from old hdd to the new ssd if no restore dvd was provided:
    1. Place the ssd into a HDD UltraBay. Once inserted the UltraBay into the laptop, turn it on, then initialize the SSD in disk management(right click my computer->Manage->Disk Management) to GPT format.
    2. Download Paragon Partition Manager 14 Home trial version. Install and run it, then choose Hard disk migration to copy my windows 8.1 pro from old hdd to the new ssd, takes about 10 min.
    3. Then restart and press F2 to boot into bios and change ssd’s boot priority(F5 or F6) to the top, save the settings and restart.
    4. After making sure the system boots up properly, run the onekey recovery and initialize the laptop OS to factory status(get rid of trial software or anything unnecessary).
    5. The last step is to switch the physical locations of SSD and old HDD(reformat the entire HDD for storage purpose only).

The Seagate 600 pro probably has just a little bit lower performance score than samsung 840 evo, but it definitely has much better durability as well as its higher performance/price ratio, plus 5 year warranty to back it up. After the installation, my laptop’s windows experience index score went up from 5.9 to 7.2, bottlenecked by the graphic card. It was a great buy from vendor tigerdirect for just 119.99, the laptop loads guild wars 2 much faster than before, I am very satisfied! 🙂

The picture shows that the drive is assembled in USA, but the one I received is actually made in Thailand, just adding this in case if someone is expecting a product made in USA. Anyway, it wouldn’t matter in performance.
