When you sincerely think of the video game landscape, 2022 saw a couple of great characters making decent changes & transform themselves into multi-dimensional in many different ways. We saw that greatly with the transformation of Kirby going 3D with the brilliant & joyous Kirby & The Forgotten Land. The game was not only charming & fun, but had a delightful challenge that appealed to everyone. That same would also be the case with Sonic The Hedgehog. While he was more known lately for being a box office giant with the 2 Sonic movies, in regards to video games, Sonic The Hedgehog has been more baron with some good titles like Sonic Colors Ultimate & Team Sonic Racing. But Sega chose to bring Sonic into a new challenge with open-world gameplay. But the question is, is it worth it? We’ll, let’s put it this way with a bunch of rings to the side.
Sonic Frontiers is a mixed bag at times. Mostly good with a little bad to the mix. For Sonic, he is entrapped on Starfall Islands & he has to run wild in order to free his friends Amy, Knuckles, Tails & even Dr. Robotnik from the digital realms he entrapped them in. Sonic has to run wild unlocking parts of the islands, collecting the chaos emeralds more than once & stopped the virtual titans that’re controlling the land. The game may seem simple at first, but gets increasingly challenging at first. While that does handle well for Sonic as a character, the game has issues that can easily lose the gamer.
In regards to the gameplay, Sonic runs mostly well and you have a lot of places to take challenges, such as fishing to earn tokens & scrolls. But there are also cyberspace levels that bring back the classic ensuring legacy of Sonic with memories of Chemical Plant Zone from Sonic 2 & Speed Highway from Sonic Adventure. In those regards, it can be simple & relaxing at times. The game does look good & has some really intimate music that brings in a lot of heart into the game. The framerate is simple at 30 FPM & matches past Sonic movements from past Switch Sonic games, but lags behind PS5 & Xbox Series X. But that isn’t a problem in the end. The problems are more not with Sonic itself, but with other things that can easily draw the hard core Sonic gamer down.
The problems with the game are more within the graphics, because there are moments where you’ll see more pop-in graphics that can easily become more of a turnoff at times, because it takes away from the gameplay. Also, controlling Sonic is a bit looser in regards to the traditional Sonic controls, unlike the better Sonic games in the past like Sonic Generations that had tighter functionality. That does become a issue, but that loses a lot as well in regards to the cyberspace levels as well. Also, the game could’ve had a bit more to play with where it tries to be more stylish & driven in regards to variety. Considered that Sonic Frontiers might try & seem to be more like The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild, instead it seems like Sonic Frontiers is trying to be more like Bowser’s Fury from Super Mario 3D World for the Switch in the end. Not a bad thing, but not overwhelming in the end.
What you really get with Sonic Frontiers in the end is mostly a good game, but not overwhelming in the scheme of things. I do like the new concepts that Sonic had made, but in the end there were some rough issues that draws the game down. While I did hope there could’ve been more to make the game more appealing, I did mostly get what I wanted with a challenging game. It is engaging & enduring, but loses some shines that can easily draw away new Sonic fans, unlike the hard core ones. If you’re new to Sonic The Hedgehog, you’re better off playing Sonic Generations or Sonic Origins first, than you should come back to this game if you would like. For hard core Sonic fans, and those that want gameplay similar to Sonic Unleashed, this one mostly does take the cake.

Sonic Team really put time and effort into the Switch version of Frontiers. While the game does run at 720p and 30 FPS, the game still looks and runs similar to the PlayStation, Xbox, and PC versions. There are issues like Pop-in and it’s not just exclusive to switch, it’s affecting every version of the game, so hopefully they can fix that situation. Overall, I’m really impressed with what they done for the Switch port, knowing the limitations of the hardware.
It’s also fast and fluent when it comes to gameplay and the mechanics. While the controls feel a bit wonky at first, you’ll get the hang of it once you continue to play the game. The new attacks and moves that Sonic can do definitely took inspiration from other games, but that isn’t a bad thing This gives the game a new formula that is fresh and unique to the franchise and to new and old players.
The story was well written, music was wonderfully crafted, and the environment of the world felt nice and relaxing while you have to keep your guard up for any enemies. There is plenty of room on what Sonic Team needs to improve on for their next title, but this is an example of them listening to feedback. Overall, Sonic Team learned from their mistakes they made from previous games and created something that I consider a masterpiece.

Grand kids love playing this and they definitely play better than I do!
What’s the Deal –
Sonic frontiers has its problems, but it is easily the best 3d sonic title since Generations back in 2011.
There are parts where its really obvious the game was being rushed for the holiday deadline, but despite that I found the game to be very enjoyable, and sonic’s open zone controls are buttery smooth. Its like the perfect mix of sonic adventure era controls and modern boost controls, plus a surprisingly decent combat system.
On switch, the game runs about as well as it possibly could. There are lots of visual downgrades but the game runs at a mostly solid 30fps, and has reasonable loading times. Sonic Team did a better switch port than most other AAA studios, which is kind of a sad reminder of the current state of the games industry.
jose –
Big Sonic fan the game is fun but hard at times and I do get entertainment out of it and it’s hard to find a way to go sometimes
RADAMANTHYS –
It was for my son. He’s happy that’s all what I can say about the game.
Luisito –
Josh –
