I’ve owned many different helmets over the years, half helmets, 3/4, and full face helmets. This one is by far the best out of all of them. My main two helmets before this one were an Icon Airframe Pro and a Bell Qualifier, the Shoei surpassed both in every way. Here are some categories:

Comfort – 5/5, very comfortable helmet once you put it on, no pressure points or hot spots. Only issue is putting the helmet on and taking it off, it’s super tight as it’s supposed to be but it tears the back of my ears, drawing blood. Another thing to bring up is that I always wear sunglasses under my helmet when I ride, this helmet fits glasses perfect without forcing them against your head at all.

Sizing – Fits pretty standard, I wear a large in the Icon helmet and a medium in the bell, I chose a large for the Shoei and it fits perfect.

Ventilation – The vents in the helmet work very well and I can feel the airflow particularly on the top of my head when they are open. The only complaint I have is the large vent on the forehead is awkward to operate and is hard to tell it if is open or closed when wearing gloves. The visor opening mechanism takes some getting used to but once you figure it out it works great.

Quietness – This was my main reason I purchased this helmet, I had heard great things about this being one of the quietest helmets on the market. After riding with it, it’s significantly quieter than both my icon and bell. Although it does not completely eliminate road/wind noise, it does do a good job muffling it. When you have the visor open, you can hear everything but as soon as you close the visor everything gets so much quieter.

Clarity – The helmet has great visibility and not really any blind spots. My only complaint is the visor fogs fairly quickly even with the breath guard. The pin lock should eliminate this but I haven’t tried it yet as it’s not a huge issue.

Bluetooth Compatibility – This helmet fits a Bluetooth headset well, has built in pockets for the speakers and is easy to install. Quiet enough that I can clearly hear music even up to 80+ mph.

Weight – This helmet feels a few ounces heavier than my bell, I don’t know for sure but it feels heavier when holding them. This is no problem at all as the incredible aerodynamics counter the weight when riding.

Aerodynamics – All I can say is wow. The aerodynamics of the helmet are amazing. From low speeds to higher interstate speeds, the helmet has significantly less drag than any other helmet I’ve used. I ride an aggressive club styled cruiser and even with the more laid back position when compared to the upright sport bike position, it performs very well. On the interstate I’ve noticed that when I turn my head, there is almost no difference than when you are looking forward, I say that as a good thing as there is minimal drag and wind resistance.

Quality – The helmet feels solid and well made. From the outer shell to the internals, everything feels and looks like a quality product.

Extras – The helmet comes with a clear visor, a breath guard, a chin curtain, and the pin lock insert. I can’t speak for the pin lock as I haven’t used it yet, but the other components are nice. Another factor to consider is the availability of aftermarket visors, last year I couldn’t find many at all but now there are a few companies that make great visors for the 1400 for a good price.

A quick overview of the helmet, overall an amazing, quality helmet. Although it is expensive, it is well worth the money not only for safety, but also for looks and rider comfort.

There have many reviews of this helmet so I am going to stick to what things I found. I wear a large in each of the Shoei helmets I have. This one is no exception though as my first full face, I found the fit to be really snug. Not uncomfortable mind you, but SNUG. It’s a bit of a process to get it on, again, not problematic in any way, but nonetheless a process. I find the field of vision to be no less than any of the open face Shoeis I have owned. The visor when down, cuts noise noticeably, but in warm/hot weather as in above 80 degrees, makes the helmet warmer. I generally wear a skull cap under the helmet to wick away perspiration and that helps. Ventilation is certainly adequate, but it’s not like the thing is going to be air conditioned. I tried the chin screen and found that it wanted to hang up on my nose when removing the helmet so I removed it completely. Others may have different experiences. Mounting my intercom headset presented come challenges. I have a GL 1800 and use the bike’s existing intercom system. The cutouts in the helmet seem a bit small for the speakers which came with the IMC Motocom intercom system I use. When I first mounted the speakers into the cutouts they pushed against my ears and I think this stems from the snug fit of the helmet. I skirted that issue by cutting up the round selfsticking velcro mounts for the speakers and making smaller pieces which I was able to put down into the cutouts and pressed the speakers down into the cutouts. That maneuver helped and essentially resolved the problem of the speakers pressing against my ears. The newer bluetooth communication setups may have smaller speaker which may fit into those helmet cutouts so you may not have the issue I had. A Pinlock antifog panel comes with the helmet and will eliminate any cold weather fogging. The Shoei RF-1400 is pricey, but I feel safer in a full face and the comfort, fit, and finish is there. Good buy and no regrets!
