If you have a home studio that isn’t properly treated acoustically, it’s simple, favor dynamic microphones in your setup. I bought a Neumann microphone before properly treating my space and the initial recording session was heartbreaking because I had a $2K mic that sounded horrible.
Even in a properly treated studio, the SM7dB is a great choice, I’ve personally never heard a singer sound bad on an SM7 variation mic, the low boost and tapered high end is flattering, unlike some condenser microphones that will rip your head off with the boost in high frequencies. I struggle with sibilance on my vocals, and certain microphones will only exacerbate it. No issues on the SM7dB!
The newer SM7dB sounds great, I’ve heard people say the SM7B sounds better, there have always been variables in the testing that I’ve seen online to be conclusive. Shure themselves say the capsule and circuitry, other than the added preamp (which btw has been designed by Cloud), are the same, and that’s good enough for me. In my studio, I have quality outboard mic preamps with plenty of gain, but I still like to use the onboard preamp on the SM7dB at +28dB so I have more flexibilty with how I’m gain staging my mic pre, and if I were using a cheaper audio interface with built-in preamps, I certainly wouldn’t want to be maxing out the gain on the built-in mic pre’s.
The Shure SM7dB (and SM7B) are built to last , so although they are expensive for dynamic microphones the value is certainly there. If you can’t afford the $400-$500 purchase, start with an SM57 $100, when the funds are there make the step up to an SM7dB (or SM7B), it will be a vocal mic that you’ll always use, no matter how many mics you end up owning.

I’ve purchased many headsets, microphones, and other audio equipment over the years, potentially spending into the mid 4 figures. This is all you need for a microphone solution.
Do you record in a noisy environment? No need for noise gates, fancy software, out of the box, this microphone will perform as required, just ensure you have a nice stable stand / boom for the microphone, and it will handle the rest. The on mic air suspension functions as a massive buffer from desk bumps, movement, and other issues you’re familiar with on lesser microphones. Simply point this microphone towards the intended subject, and it will handle the rest.
Build quality… state of the art. It’s a hefty microphone, but every bit of the weight is intentional. I believe I could step on this microphone (will not be testing, lol!) and it will hurt me before its damaged. I’m convinced that this microphone is the handiwork of every comment or concern for microphones since the beginning of time, and they addressed it in this masterpiece.
Potential concerns: Not having enough power for this beast.
Please, do not forgo a sufficient power source for this microphone. I would strongly recommend getting a slightly overkill amplifier to ensure that you are getting the most you can out of this product.
Fidelity retention: You will sound like you. Perhaps a bit more amplified lows, but you will be able to recognize your voice on recordings for possibly the first time ever. It’s exciting to hear yourself and not ask “Who is this?” I don’t know how to explain experiencing this for the first time, but it is truly exciting.

i have an extensive mic locker, but i’m still a novice. this mic without going into specifics because there are better resources out there to delve into the capabilities of the microphone, but ill say if you are after a prime dynamic radio-broadcast level vocal output, this is difficult to be beat.
the difference from the og sm7b is that it features its own preamp that provides the mic w variable levels of gain so you don’t need a separate pre—whether it’s a dedicated phantom-powered in line device to provide clean gain to bring mostly dynamics w enough volume to be heard appropriately without needing to max out levels on your amplifier to try to hear yourself without introducing undue noise, or something like a cloudlifter that sits in between but both provide the same type of thing.
my point is you don’t need to worry about feeding this mic directly to your amp without a pre in between to bring up the mic-level output to listenable levels. there’s also other options to adjust the quality of your sound on the device itself as well that i haven’t explored, but i’ll update this review when i familiarize myself w further capabilities.
also it fits well on my boom (scissor) (not low-profile) even tho it’s on the heavier side, tho getting the brand-touted scissor arm might be a good option as something to bundle w this purchase.
works w my amp right out of the box (mixer) and this vocal output…let me tell you, is downright the warmest, most flattering mic for my voice (on the deeper side).
jumped in a voice chat w a friend who also has a dynamic from this brand and we were told we sounded like we were on professional radio.
take that as you will, i have never heard a mic output like this. ever. the low end is handled w care and the crispness of the vocal is unmatched. i’m in disbelief, as im in a call monitoring my voice as i compose this review and it’s completely outstanding. i’m told of this high quality.
set up is nothing more than providing your favorite xlr cable and getting it on a boom or stand, plugging it into your audio interface/amplifier, configuring in your operating system and launching your favorite chat client.
i think it’s worth it, as for now, i recommend. thanks for reading.
