Yet another quality music release from Daniel Rossen. This 23 minute EP does not depart radically from the sounds and styles that Rossen creates with his other acts, Grizzly Bear and Department of Eagles. This is not an exploratory electronic album or a free-form jazz odyssey. Songs like Up on High and Return to Form slowly build up from fingerpicking before dramatically opening up with layers of instrumentation and percussion. Silent Song and Golden Mile are more upbeat but still retain Rossen’s moody grandeur. Overall, the EP sounds like a continuation of Department of Eagles’ Archive, with a bit more polish and with Rossen’s electric guitar a bit more in the forefront. His distinctive vocals and melodies are as beautiful and subtle as ever. If you like this, you should also check out his recent contribution to a tribute album, Waterfalls.

One day there will be a statue in the center square of every city dedicated to Daniel Rossen, for he brought us from the darkness and into the light.

One of the most beautiful solo albums of the past decade. If you’ve listened to any Dept of Eagles or Grizzly Bear before, you already know what you’re in for.

LOVE this record! Anyone who is a fan of Grizzly Bear and/or Department of Eagles will enjoy this one. I wish it was a bit longer but can’t complain. The musical quality and ingenuity is incredible and shows that Daniel Rossen is one of the major influences in the sound and direction of both GB and DOE. Don’t miss this one!

I’m yet to listen to any music by the Department Of Eagles but i have heard Grizzly Bear and i’ve been meaning to revisit their work for some time now, Daniel Rossen’s Silent Hour/Golden Mile is as good a reason as any to speed up my reacquiantance with the Brooklyn quartet and i’ll be sure to check out D of E now too. This EP has a lush resonant quality, that really bowled me over upon first listen, Rossen’s emotive voice and distinctive guitar playing sound gorgeous when paired with cavernous drum hits and scintillating strings. All this is on display after the opening strums of Up On High which precedes to ebb and flow with beauty and grace, the strings reminscent of Nick Drake’s Bryter Layter. Silent Song and Return to Form are similarly epic yet delightfully restrained featuring pastoral guitar and a brushed cymbals. The plaintive piano chords in Saint Nothing evoke the solemn menace of a young Trent Reznor, but sound forlorn and wise with the Rossen’s soulful croon over them. The EP ends with the shuffling drums and Faheyesque Guitar of Golden Mile with Rossen singing “For a silent hour, for a golden mile, there is bliss in this mess, there is madness all around” I can’t describe this wonderful opus any better than that, except to add here’s hoping we get an hour’s worth of beauty next time round.

Incredible guitar playing, vocals, melodies, instrumentation. Rossen has yet again created a type of musical feel unique in style and form. Just buy this in vinyl and you’ll see what I mean.
