Ok First of all, so that we are all on the same page here, this blu ray player is NOT wifi. It must be hooked up to your modem via an Ethernet cable if you wish to enjoy the streaming products available. Also, it must be hooked up to the internet via your modem to facilitate updates, including firmware unless you do not have internet. In this case, you will need to download the firmware update onto a USB stick and than uploaded to this device via the USB located on the front panel. Instructions for both scenarios are located at the manufacturers website. Information is found in the owner’s manual. That all said and understood, we move on.
I hooked mine up to the internet via an Ethernet cable to my modem. I actually connect all my audio/video components up to the internet in this manner to alleviate the excess usage on my wifi. On screen instructions showed me the firmware currently on the machine and also an updated version of firmware I can load onto my machine. Following the prompts, the download started and was finished within 20 minutes. The info on screen showed that the newest firmware was installed. Everything worked as I hoped it would. From that point on, I inserted a movie, watched it, removed the DVD and put it all to sleep. It all worked exactly as it was supposed to. And based on the price I paid for it here at Amazon, it was a pretty good bargain. I will return after a period of time for an update, but don’t expect much, the last Sony blu ray player I owned, I used for about 5 years and now it is the backup in my bedroom.

I purchased this Sony BDPS-1700 Wired Blu-Ray Disc Player primarily for its capability to display Closed Captioning (CC) on my TV’s HDMI inputs when playing my standard DVDs with same CC encoded. I have a significant (to me) collection of British TV series DVDs, some with and some without CC encoding, than I employ to assist me (and husband) in understanding “typical” British accents used by some British actors. This feature is working well for me. This “CC” feature is separate from the “subtitles” feature common to all Blu-Ray players and may be available to other brands. I believe the Sony BDPS- 3500 and 3700 Blu-Ray players have this same CC feature. [ I don’t work for Sony or anyone else and I’m not devoted to any particular brand].

Some of my other standard DVD collection have DVDs which freeze, pixelate, skip, or just won’t play/access portions. I tested a couple DVD sets which have these problems when using my standard DVD players (more than one brand) using this Blu-Ray Disc player and the DVDs played OK. I have not tested all such DVDs in my collection with these problems and don’t claim it will work every time. These DVDs played OK when I first bought them, but subsequent playing after considerable time (years) reveals faults not previously encountered.

I have not used the player for Blu-Ray discs or for streaming.

Bought this for my husband to go in our bedroom, it hooked up pretty easy and was easy to get it going however it won’t hook up to my internet and I finally just gave up after about a half hour messing with it. It’s small enough that it doesn’t take up much room on our dresser, Otherwise it works well for what we need it to do. It does have apps that you can install if you get the internet to work, Plays Blue-Rays and DVD’s nicely, picture quality is good but it also depends on the TV it’s hooked up to (we have a flat screen). It’s fairly quite for the most part, it makes some noise but it’s not that noticeable. Came packaged nicely and it wasn’t damaged when I opened it, the remote does come with 2 AAA batteries so no need to find any. The remote is small and easy to lose if you put it down and forget where it is. Overall very happy with this little DVD player and would recommend.

Edit: in order for the internet to work or the wifi you need to hard wire the internet and get it going that way, and once it’s done it’s wifi enabled. I would do that but I don’t have a cord long enough yo reach my room. It is a really good machine and it’s super quite when it’s running. Overall very pleased!

This Sony BDPS1700 player is excellent for the price. I’m using it to play both regular and Blu-Ray discs viewed on a Panasonic plasma. I have not tried streaming with it.
    Pros:
Plays all my discs with no problems.
All digital content has been rendered superbly.
Very fast start-up. Resumes stopped movies.
    Very good value.
    Con:
Remote is slightly small – but not enough to stop me from ordering a 2nd player for another room.

If you just need a basic player which performs flawlessly and produces great video, get this Sony.

I bought two of these for my house and unfortunately one of them was defective (would not open) but I was able to return that one and keep the working one. This blu0ray play is so simple to set up and the perfect size. It also allows for smart capabilities like netflix etc. Great purchase and will be getting another one for another room.

I was looking for a simple, inexpensive Blu-ray player, and a quick startup time was an important factor. This product has an optional quick-start feature that works fairly well, but it still starts up on a dashboard rather than directly to the disc, adding a step that can take time if you’re not paying attention. With the quick-start feature disabled, the player starts up on a dashboard and you have to wait for it to register that there’s a disc inserted.

I’ve been using the player for about a month. I’ve used 8 Blu-ray discs (all from a TV series) and 1 DVD. On the first Blu-ray, there was a delay (1 or 2 seconds) before the beginning of each chapter. I initially thought it was the player, but I experienced it with only that one disc. Also, the Blu-ray discs would not remember the location when the player was stopped or powered down, so I would have to go through the previews and menu every time I powered it on. The DVD, however, did remember the location.

Physically, the player is fairly small and quite lightweight. It looks simple and clean, which I like. The remote is on the small side, and it includes buttons to change the TV volume. Those buttons worked on a Sony TV but did not work on a Samsung TV, so it may only work for Sony’s.

Lastly, I had read in another review that there was a whole process for updating the firmware for the player. However, when I went through the process I found that firmware was already up to date.
