South Park: The Complete Twentieth Season

All episodes run for twenty mins [approx.].

It’s not really a jumping on point, so the dvd is really for regular viewers. New ones can start with season one.

As with all seasons, it’s strictly for grown ups thanks to strong language and adult situations.

For the first eighteen years, South Park was like sitcoms of old. In that episodes were complete and self contained and everything reset at the end in time for the next episode.

But the tv landscape has changed since it began. And the show has started to reflect that. After experimenting with ongoing storylines in season eighteen, tentatively trying it in season nineteen, this year has no episodes that stand alone. And a few main plot strands that carry over the course of the run.

Some may not like that. Some may want it back the way it was.

Which is one of the points of the season. In an increasingly divided America, Mr Garrison’s run for president gathers momentum by promising to make America the way it was. The latest Star Wars movie, [which at the time this was shown on tv, in 2016 would be episode seven] is popular thanks to a back to basics approach. But is nostalgia all that it’s cracked up to be?

Meanwhile, social media explodes when the offensive messages a troll leaves for the school pupils sets boys against girls. And Cartman on a whole new path. Someone though has a perfect plan to deal with trolls forever…

As mentioned it won’t please the purists. But this is a very strong and very consistent season. The political satire might have been obvious, and since as mentioned it comes from 2016, dated, but it still manages to be strong and funny anyhow. And it does have a good go at all sides as well. It’s got some great points to make about social media. And it’s a great year for Cartman as the character is used in a whole new and interesting way.

As with the previous season though, it does reach a point – in this case episode six rather than nine like last time – where the storylines get to the point where they divert from the jokes somewhat, so that episode is merely very good rather then great. But it does rally nicely for a very entertaining three episodes that finish the run.

The nostalgia element plotline is rather left hanging at the end. And if you want storylines focusing on the main four characters as a group, you will be disappointed. Kyle and Cartman are heavily involved, but the four don’t get to interact. Stan doesn’t feature as a main player. And Kenny gets nothing to do whatsoever.

Nevertheless, it’s a season that takes risks and pretty much pays off as a result. A funny and strong run that shows the show still has a lot of life left in it.

Disc one: South Park by the numbers. A two minute long ad for a mobile game, which has some interesting stats about the show.
South Park, we’ve been there: a two minute long fun parody commercial about the show’s longevity.
South Park: the fractured but whole: a three minute long trailer for the latest South Park video game. No actual game clips in this but the cartoon parts are fun.
Deleted scenes: nine mins worth of deleted scenes from across the season. Some are unfinished. All are very good. Especially the last one, an alternative end to the season.
Season commentary: once again Trey Parker and Matt Stone don’t do individual short commentaries on each episode, just a nineteen min one for the season as a whole. But as ever they are entertaining articulate, and very interesting to listen to.

Disc two:

Comic con 2016 panel: a fifty one minute long interview with the show’s creators. A very entertaining watch.

It is so nice to go to their world and find out that there is a better reality than our reality.

South Park ist aktuell eine von mehreren Zeichentrickserien die sich verstärkt an ein erwachsenes Publikum richtet. Wobei sich South Park hier definitiv stärker an ein erwachsnes Publikum orientiert als z.B. Die Simpsons, Family Guy, American Dad oder Bob’s Burgers.

Und South Park hat es schon bis zur zwanzigsten Staffel geschafft. Eine Anzahl von Staffel die nur wenige Serien erreichen. Bis zur zwanzigsten sind diese auch auf DVD erschienen.

Die achtzehnte Staffel hier erscheint auf 2 DVDs mit insgesamt 10 Folgen (5 pro Disc). Die 2 Discs befinden sich in einem Pappschuber. Auf den beiden aussen Seiten findet man eine Übersicht über die Folgen sowie eine doch recht ausführliche (wenn auch nicht zu lange) Inhaltsangabe zu jeder Folge. Die DVD Box ist identisch mit denen der neunzehn bisherigen DVD Veröffentlichungen.

Seit der siebzehnten Staffel ist man dazu übergegangen eine komplette Geschichte innerhalb der Staffel zu erzählen. Also mehr oder weniger, oder auch immer mehr. In dieser Staffel ist das sehr gut erkennbar und nicht mehr zu übersehen. In der aktuellen zwanzigsten Staffel ein Höhepunkt. Damit grenzt sich South Park komplett von anderen Zeichentrickserien ab. Noch mehr also sowieso sonst.

Die Staffel steigt gleich voll ein. Mr. Garrison kommt irgendwann seine Erkenntnis das er die Wahl wirklich gewinnen könne, Mrs. Clinton und den Erinner Beeren sei dank. Allen Versuchen zum trotz kommt es wie es kommen muss.
Der Internet Troll Skankhunt42 trollt sich bald nicht mehr nur durch South Park und am ende scheint es so das nur die Dänen die Chance haben ihn und seine Mitstreiter zu entlarven und .. . Doch Doch welches Spiele eigentlich die Dänen.
Am ende kommt es zum großen Showdown zischen allen beteiligten.

Eine Besonderheit ist in dieser Staffel zu beobachten. Sie ist von so machen Fan, und im Nachhinein sogar von den beiden Schöpfern, kritisch kommentiert worden. Die Jungs kommen hier doch sehr kurz. Zur eigentlichen Story dieser Staffel tragen sie so weit nichts großartiges bei. Die Macher haben sich hier doch sehr deutlich vom damaligen US Präsidentschaftswahlkampf beeinflussen lassen. Und haben gleichzeitig Besserung versprochen. Ich persönlich sehe das ähnlich aber weniger kritisch. Die Staffel war oder ist sehr stark und das gerade durch die Aktualität.

Die Idee eine Folgen übergreifende Geschichte zu erzählen ist nicht neu für reale Serien, für Zeichentrickserien aber größtenteils schon. Mal einige Anime Serien ausgenommen. Und wurde von den Machern perfekt umgesetzt. Die Aktualität der Themen ist erstaunlich und die Machern nehmen viele Promis und Entwicklungen in den USA aber auch der Welt nahezu perfekt aufs Korn.

Was mich immer wieder verblüfft ist die Entwicklung der Serie allgemein. Die ersten Staffeln von South Park mochte ich früher nicht und mag sie auch heute noch nicht. South Park ist für mich erst so ab der sechsten, siebten, achten Staffel richtig interessant geworden. Und auch wenn ich Die Simpsons, Family Guy oder American Dad ebenso gerne sehe wie South Park bewegt sich diese Serie doch auf einem ganz anderen Niveau als die anderen genannten Serie. Hier hat man sich getraut komplett andere Wege zu gehen und es ist so gelungen das sich die Serie einfach abhebt von den anderen Serien. South Park ist für mich momentan die beste Zeichentrickserie ihrer Art. Und auch die mutigste.

Eine mehr als gelungene Staffel einer tollen und immer mehr überzeugenden Serie die noch nie so gut war wie heute.

Love the show! Have dvd collection from first season so glad they still make them. Show as on hulu now on max and specials on paramount plus. Now, I can now watch no matter where they put the shows or specials.
