I just bought a new roady and it came with white bar tape which looks nice but gets dirty fast and was driving me nuts. The factory tape wasn’t enough padding so I opted for this after much research. I decided to go over the original tape and am glad I did. My bars are much thicker which is more comfortable and more surface area and really absorbs the bumps. My hands are no longer fatigued after a ride and I wont have to cut my rides short anymore and spend more time with the “wife”.
I wrapped the old bar tape with black electrical tape to hold it on and cut 1/4 off the end so I could get the new tape into the hole and start the wrap. This was my first time doing this and had to redo the first bar 3 times before I was satisfied but then again I am a perfectionist. The Sram Logo on the tape itself make the perfect overlap measuring point. Take your time especially around the bends and it will come out fine. Going over the old tape I didn’t have enough product to do the figure 8 wrap around the brake hoods so I compromised and used black electrical tape to hide the white tape so I could go on thick in the drops were I primarily ride. I ordered the black tape so this totally blended perfect and hide the hideous white tape.
Search Youtube for DIY videos on how to install bar tape. There are 3 methods -using a cheater strip, going figure 8 or redneck style (me) using camouflaging black electrical tape for an optical illusion. That is what I did and used my car bike carrier as my work station. Use a bungee cord or mechanical clamp to lock your front wheel from moving around as you tape unless you enjoy torture and frustration. If you screw up -just peel it back and start over.
I couldn’t be happier and now have super comfy bars that can handle the crappy roads I ride on. The only thing I don’t like is the odd brown cork fleck you see in the tape itself as it makes your bars look dirty. It looks like tobacco is stuck on there and would have been nicer died to the same color as the tape itself. It also seems gimmicky as that little of cork isn’t going to do anything for the ride. I thought this tape was literally made of cork -instead its more like .0001 %. Oh well -just me being picky.
The bar ends do look pretty damn cool and are reflective which is a plus as more visibility is always a good thing on a bike. Definitely one of the best upgrades I have bought. When this tape wears out, I may go over it for a third layer…Ride on my bothers and sisters!

So I’m beyond happy with this purchase I had been needing to fix my handlebars for so long and this was the perfect bar tape. Good price. Very comfortable on hand. I’m no expert and have never put on bar tape but this was easy and I think I did an okay job.
Would definitely recommend buy this now don’t overthink it.
