A lot of debate in the comments and a lot of negative reviews may be deceiving. Boil it down simple: this is a starter tool at an extremely affordable price. IF you are buying this expecting highest grade materials that don’t dull easily on the blade or perfectly machined surfaces you are simply exercising poor judgement. At the price point this is a great option. Is it perfect? not even close. the sides are not perpendicular to the base (one side was 90ยฐ the other was about 88.5ยฐ on the unit I received), and the sole was not flat…. But I didn’t expect that for the cost. You can absolutely use this out of the packaging and get a decent result, but if you are expecting to use it for doing quality work, expect to put some time into it first.

As soon as I opened the package I took the unit apart and started flattening the sole and truing up the side that was out of perpendicularity. then some blade sharpening and minor adjustments. All easy to do (if not time consuming), and should be EXPECTED at the price point.

coming in with those expectations its a pretty good product in my opinion.

This little guy is an excellent value. It was smaller than I expected, but gets the job done. The only disadvantage is that because of the small size, my hands start to get sore after a half hour or so. But the blade was nice and sharp right out of the box and the factory adjustment was pretty good–took a nice clean ribbon off a pine 1×6. I was pleasantly surprised when it did the same with 5/4 cherry. I’ve had a little trouble in areas where the grain isn’t clean, but that might be more a case of deficient operator skill. The blade held its edge through three weeks of moderate use, and was easy to re-sharpen (with the Scary Sharp method). I was so impressed with the re-sharpened blade that I ended up shaving all the hair off my left forearm. Had to wear long sleeves for a couple weeks. But I digress…excellent little plane, especially for the money.

When it comes to this Stanley hand plane I have no complaints I’ve had it for 2 years now and it was sharp out of the box I use it almost every day for the money for somebody on a budget starting out woodworking it is your best block plane that you can buy out of the box it’s Sharp you can work with it right off the bat and know that you won’t have to sharpen it right away good quality blades flattened right out of the box it is the best hand plane you can buy when you’re on a budget even for somebody like me that doing woodworking for 27 years now and haven’t used hand tools much but need a new block plane and it’s the best one I ever bought

The media could not be loaded.

Bought this as my second plane, next to a secondhand Stanley no 4. This one is very disappointing compared to the one I already own.
    1) the sole is not flat (hard to capture in a picture)
    2) the sole is not perpendicular to the sides
    3) the pin that’s supposed to move the blade in and out of the throat doesn’t catch on to the blade properly. Therefore, adjusting is almost impossible.

Blade itself seems to be fine after some sharpening. Buy only if you have the time and equipment to lap the sole and sides or you don’t care about sloppy / crooked planing than buy this plane.

I avoided a hand planer because they always seemed so overpriced for what they were. But this thing was way cheaper than the local options and performs fantastic! Time for me to sharpen the blade already so now I have to learn that skillโ€ฆ

Solid, simple casting of sole and lever cap. The adjustment mechanics are pressed steel which can be expected at this price point. The mouth is fixed and does not adjust. I expected that a bit of “tuning” would be needed when I received the plane so no surprise there. The sole was not flat but after using some 220 grit and then some 1000 to finish, it was made flat and square in under 30 minutes. The iron was fairly sharp but not razor sharp. Sharpening was fast but a bit too easy. The iron felt “soft” when compared to my vintage planes. I suspect that it will not hold the edge well but only time will tell. At <1/2 the cost of a Lee Valley or Nielsen, it is well worth it even if you decide to replace the iron with a vintage one or higher quality one (Veritas iron is $35) at some point. I'd recommend this plane to all but the highest end users. **One note. If you look carefully, there are 2 different plane models on Amazon's page. On has a small front knob, the other does not. You will receive the one without the front knob.

I’m a fan of Stanley wood planes; I’ve always gotten good products from them, but based on things I’ve read and other Amazon reviews there does appear to be some quality control issues at their factory(s). My advice is if you get one that is going to require hours of work to get “right” just send it back! The block plane I received was almost ready to use out of the box… it just needed to be sharpened (I don’t expect any tool to come out of the factory all that sharp). The blade is manufactured in England (see picture), I’m not sure where the rest of the plane is manufactured because I threw away the packaging. The sole was almost perfectly flat, but had some sort of clear lacquer or paint on it which I removed… probably didn’t need to, but I was worried about it gumming up. The grind on the sole and sides of the plane are a little rough looking, but that has zero impact on its function… as long as it’s flat!

Just FYI – there is no throat adjustor on this plane.

It feels like itโ€™s good quality. I just canโ€™t get it to work well. Iโ€™ve never used one and Iโ€™m learning. But so far I find myself using my wood scrapers instead.
