I would highly recommend this book to all teachers. The activities are really practical and the differentiation ideas have worked really with my class including the gifted students. So far I have been accessing the ideas around developing fraction concepts (in my opinion usually rushed to get to calculating with fractions). The ideas are not new but really well structured and the thinking behind them thoughtfully explained. I have been teaching for many years and have a passion for math education but I have to say I don’t think I’ve ever taught fractions as well before.

Good book with some innovative ideas on how to give students a hands on approach to teaching math. I hate doing drills and needed some ideas on how to approach math in a way the students could work with their peers and figure out different methods of getting to the same conclusion. Students need several strategies to get to where they need to go. They don’t all take the same path.

I purchased this book last year based on customer reviews and have not been disappointed. I have taught 7th and 8th grade prealgebra for 8 years, primarily using a direct lesson format and trying to fit in “hands on” and cooperative learning activities where I could. The overall results in terms of student achievement haven’t been terrible, but not spectacular either. So many students come to my classroom with existing negative feelings about learning mathematics. I’ve tried different strategies to get these students more engaged in the math and invested in their academic success, but with poor results. I have been looking for a way to get these kids to take responsibility for their learning. Between what I have learned from this book, and some terrific problem-based learning workshops I attended this summer, I am excited about returning to my classroom with some changes in how I teach.
We are told, as teachers, that students need to construct their own knowledge in order to “own it” but this is the first book I’ve read that really provided a clear picture of what that looks like in a classroom and how to implement it. The first chapter of the book addresses the value and process of teaching student-centered math. The remaining chapters address specific topics (fractions, whole number computation, etc.) and suggest activities. I wish I could get my district to require all math teachers to read this book (appropriate to their grade levels).

It really helps teachers think about why we teach the way we do, how kids develop an understanding of Math and why we have to do things differently.
