  1. John F. Schmidt

The American culture of the past. portrayed in this book, is almost unrecognizable to a modern reader, especially one born after the nineteen sixties. Among almost everything else, the presence of the modern welfare state has morphed our world into a devil’s caricature of Dick Faulkner’s Christian charity. The impersonal monstrosity that passes for charity in today’s world – funded by taxpayers who have no control over how money is spent, or who receives it, regardless of moral responsibility, has done nothing to improve society, but rather has bred far more dysfunction than it was intended to cure. The hero’s practical Christian view of life, and especially the role that our broken human nature must play in actively helping others in need, was the underlying vision that informed Ronald Reagan’s personal philosophy.
One of the main reasons he played such a positive role in our country (not perfect, but very healing and corrective) was the vision he picked up from “that printer of Udall’s”.
The book is well worth the read, not only for the rebuke it gives to our modern welfare state, but also for the well-deserved charge it lays at the feet of modern Christianity that still bears the flaws portrayed in the book, and some new ones.
Yet, despite the flaws of the professing church, the head of the church, Jesus Christ, is as able to change anyone’s life, from an out of work printer, to a de-flowered society girl. With a touch of worldly wisdom filtered throught the genuine Gospel, the book shows an accurate result when Christ is put in the center of efforts to reform society. Write Him out of the script, as we do in modern society, and we produce industrial-strength mayhem, not the good we think we can do without regard to Him.

Ronald Reagan read this book when he was young. It inspired him to serve others rather than himself. I am inspired to try to influence those around me with the gospel, like the main characters of this story did.

Wright’s style is similar to the works of George MacDonald. Virtue and godliness weave into a fascinating story of heroic individuals made bigger than life by the magic of Wright’s vivid narrative.
If you do not want Christianity, this book is not for you. But if desire to learn about god’s work through everyday people, then you will not put it down until you read the final chapter.

Good story. I like the book. The spacing is a little peculiar. But it is readable for sure. Just seems a little less finished and some illustrations are missing. Still it was a good price and worth it. Thanks for reprinting it.

In the Ronald Reagan movie, his mother had him read this book. He said it made a powerful impact on his life. It speaks volumes to churches about the importance of “practicing what you preach”. I highly recommend this book!

I enjoyed this book so much! It starts out with a simple story line, but gradually becomes more complex. Written when character mattered, faith mattered. A book of hope, new beginnings.

Saw this book during a showing of the movie Reagan. Movie suggested Noelle Reagan got it for her son Dutch. Message is clear, a wholesome life vested in Jesus’ teachings can improve lives. Ronald Reagan modeled that behavior. Gala I read it.
