These seem to be getting thinner with every passing year and may eventually vanish, which might not be a bad thing. Seems like the editors don’t consider anything but biology to be science. Couple of items on hard sciences but otherwise mostly handwringing about climate change.

First let me say that Amazon rejected my first review because they claimed it violated some obscure rule in that infamously vague thing call “community guidelines”. So I am unable to tell you what I really think.
As far as the book, for some reason the editor chose to put her politics above her loyal readers. We get to read about her politically biased opinions and choices instead of just good science.

Like many others, I picked up this book to learn more about the wonders of our world. Instead, I was served a heavy helping of the editor’s political viewpoints. In her foreword, Ms. Jaime Green unapologetically explains that she selected the pieces in this book on the basis of how they fit into her political worldview. This is far from the promise of the book’s title and undermines the credibility of the book and its selected writings. Ironically, Ms. Green even writes that she gets this feedback consistently — that the “it’s-too-political” crowd writes to her often and would prefer a selection that focuses on helping readers “understand the world, appreciate its beauty, deepen our connections to nonhuman life, etc. etc. etc.” That’s exactly right. If I wanted to hear Ms. Green’s political viewpoints, I’d head to a newspaper’s op-ed section, not to a book titled “The Best American Science and Nature Writings.” Needless to say, I will not be purchasing more from this series.

The subjects are excellent because of the scientific insights I learned, the stories also increase my appreciation for nature and animals. I am nearsighted, so I am delighted to learn there are contact lenses and eye drops to improve my eyesight by reading the piece about myopia. I also love the piece that investigates the causes of chronic kidney disease in El Salvador. I am surprised to learn that heat stress and dehydration are two factors that cause chronic kidney disease. Diabetes runs in my family, so I enjoyed reading this information. The piece entitled “Brain Wave” is fascinating because I didn’t know about all tasks that physically disabled people can do with brain and computer interface. Physically disabled people can play video games, create art and write email just by their thoughts by using a computer interface.
I enjoyed the piece entitled “Dislodged”. This piece is about a father and daughter road trip from Los Angeles to Seattle. I love the way the author writes about with such respect for the redwood trees and the thrush birds in Caliifornia. The author talks about the need to reconnect with the physical environment which is a sentiment that resonates with me. I also love the piece entitled “True Grit” because it highlights the intelligence of cows. A cow is an animal that I did not consider intelligent, but they are hardy animals and strong long-distance swimmers. This science and nature collection is such enjoyable reading.
