A good analysis of mental illness but for me just too many references to Yale, the Ivy League and brilliance. It just felt overdone, as though the reader wasn’t smart enough to pick up the importance to the story the first, second, third fourth times…

Jonathan Rosen has no cure for the paradox of mental illness, but he has a unique point of view. A childhood friend of Michael Laudor, who appeared to find a balance with his illness until he tragically murdered his pregnant girlfriend, Rosen has had decades to ruminate on the disaster. The result is a book that functions as both biography and treatise on the mentally ill in America. The case of Michael Laudor seems to hit every note in the debate: how to intervene with an undiagnosed/unmedicated person? How to treat those who are medicated and coming to grips with their illness? What role and accommodations are available for those in the grip of illness, where even the treatments can inhibit potential?
The primary finding here, beyond the identification of these legal and social challenges, is that even when a mentally ill person is presented with every benefit, including the best minds in our country and resources unavailable to anyone else, they can still meet a tragic end. The message is that something needs to change.

This book sorely needed a decent editor to cut it down to half the current size. It tells an important story about mental illness but that is lost in tedious detail from the author’s own story. Who cares about the author’s love life and his theories on post-structuralism? A decent editor would have left the important narrative about the tragic impact of mental illness on this brilliant man, and the cultural changes that left him so at risk – and eliminated 200 pages of unnecessary self-indulgence from the author. Most disappointing.

So many interesting threads, all of which I found compelling. I see others have called it too academic, like a doctoral thesis. Of course it’s written in a much more accessible way, and covers a broader scope than any doctoral thesis would, but the quality referred to is one thing I really enjoyed in the book.
Will be most interesting to those with an intellectual bend, interested in ideas and the way they are both shaped by, and themselves shape, the world we live in. Also those interested in mental illness and in the nature of friendship.
The less you know about the story going in, the better imo.

Much of the book explores the changing policies and attitudes towards mental illness in the US, from deinstitutionalisation to today, as they evolve alongside the author’s childhood friend’s struggle with schizophrenia. Both the history and the personal narrative are fascinating, and I found both strands quite depressing.

This is great book in so many ways. It is beautifully written – I did not find a single word or phrase that wasn’t needed. Rosen tells a compelling story that makes the book hard to put down. In addition to the drama of the story, it deals with an important issue for our time: How should we treat those with severe mental illness? Rosen doesn’t so much answer that question as intelligently and sensitively place the tragic story of his friend in the context of that issue. Clearly, our mental health system did not work in this case as in so many others. Finally, Rosen’s voice in this book is a comfort. He is a very wise and compassionate writer. I am old and an avid reader, and this is one of the best books I have ever read.

Mr. Rosen is obviously a very bright and articulate author. And his research is impeccable! I appreciated the story of Michael immensely. But too many chapters read as a doctoral thesis or dissertation, which interrupts the emotional context of Michael’s plight. Just my opinion.

I bought this book because I used to live in the little town where this murder happened. Very small town, Hastings, NY, very terrible crime. Maybe it’s just me but after reading this very well written true crime story, I wondered why all those around this sad man enabled him so. I mean, he graduated from law school only because he had such a lot of help. People must have noticed how he was treating his girlfriend/victim. They set him up in a faux law practive, for crying out loud. He was such a fragile man, so very mentally ill and they all knew it. Maybe they didn’t just sit by and let him commit this terrible murder, but they really did nothing to keep the world safe from this very sick man. Very well researched, very well written and thoughtful.
