Finished the book in a day! A wolfey modern day rom-com with the perfect balance of a decent plot and great spice. A great swoony escape.

The fake mate story from Lara Ferguson is a cute and steamy story for inbetween.
It takes place at a hospital. I like, that there are no gruesome operations, blood splattering emergencies or anything like that. Because of few hospital interactions or the similarity to other workplaces, I think the story could have also played in an office workplace.
I like the changing story telling from Mackenzie’s and Noah’s point of view. And that alpha needs the help, not the omega. The dialogues are heartwarming and funny. The sex sounds hot and fulfilling. It’s a good story for steamy entertainment.

I went into this book already knowing about the omegaverse through fanfiction and wanted to give this genre a try again. The first half of the book was intriguing; as the characters were built well, the story has good pace & progression, and the โfake datingโ trope was well executed. The building sexual tension in this book was excellently described and I caught myself pining over the characters finally just โdoing it.โ Once the smut scenes entered the chat, they were alright but not as great as the chemistry and sexual tension leading up to it.
After halfway through, the book got lost on me. I wasnโt as interested and the stakes and twists were cheesy & predictable. Many of the same verbiage and stories were repeated to try to add humor to this book, such as Jessica from radiology and the story of Noah making a nurse cry being โgrossly over-exaggerated.โ I did find myself laughing a few times, as there were other great parts of this book. Truly, I loved the characters and the environment built for this book but the longer I stuck with it, the less interested I was.
It feels like the last half of the book was rushed and I found myself skipping through the epilogue over how cheesy & happy the ending was. Donโt get me wrong, I love happy endings! This ending in particular just wasnโt as satisfying (other than what happens to Dennis, cause he SUCKS).
Overall, Iโm glad I gave this book a try and didnโt DNF because I wanted the satisfaction of finishing (lol), but wouldnโt read again, nor recommend because the many cringeworthy moments and unmet satisfaction I ended up having.

The Fake Mate is a standalone adult Omegaverse shifter romance following Mackenzie and Noah as they, through a series of strange events, find themselves pretending to be mates in order to save one’s career and the other from the barrage of family expectation. What they were not expecting, though, was that despite being both medical professions that drama would dog their steps as coworkers gossip, they fake date, and, oh yeah, they start to wonder what is real and what is pretend.
For context, Lana herself has said she intends this to be an introduction to the Omegaverse world for readers. In this world there are three designations, Alpha, Beta, and Omega. Alphas are known for more dominant personalities that can intimidate and they get a bad rep for that…though they had a very special attribute to their body that many people dream of. Betas are the regular humans who live and exists. Omegas are the biological opposites of Alpha and are well known for having heat cycles. The details can very across different Omegaverse but that’s the key information.
Now I am going to be clear. I ADORED this book. It is cosy, sweet, spicy, and the banter is OFF the charts. I will say there is a slight bit of miscommunication but I did not find it impeded my love of this story and characters.
Mackenzie is an easy going and darling character. All she wants to do is get her grandmother off her back about dating after having horrible date after horrible date. She is so nonchalant about things and takes things in strides. I felt her adaptability and flexibility worked so well to compliment the story.
Noah embraces the gruff and intimidating male lead…except with Mackenzie. He has spent his life trying to suppress is Alpha designation as he knows how people would treat him. I loved his reactions to Mackenzie as he was always surprised in the most delightful ways. In addition watching him struggle with his biological urges with rationality just tugged on my heart. He is a good example of a dominant but cinnamon roll kind of Alpha. He may be intimidating to others but not to his (fake) girl.
This book does contain spice. I would place it at a 4 spicy pepper out of 5 spicy pepper. It is a faster burn romance with steamy action already happening around the 40% mark but what really ups the spice is that, by nature of being Omegaverse, we get some fun tidbit to spice with knots, slick, and heats. I felt the spice worked well with these characters and the romance was so much fun because of how much the spice highlighted this was the opposite of casual.
“…when I’m with you…I don’t feel like I’m just going through the motions in life. When I’m with you…I feel like actually living.”
In terms of world building, I felt the the author did a good job introducing Omegaverse to new audiences while also setting up the world for these characters. The world isn’t very much different from our own so it is easy for people to fall into and I am a sucker for medical shows so having this set in a hospital with two doctors had me from the get-go.
The story itself is easy going and sweet. It follows a lot of the fun aspects of contemporary rom-coms set in fake dating scenarios and the comfort in that had me smiling and kicking my feet up. I loved the banter, the escalation of the lies (and question of when things changed), but there is also a bit of a twist that will shake things up. Add in the spiciness of shifters and Omegaverse and you had this blend of characters trying to make rational decisions while all the instincts are telling them to be together. The denial, the egging on by friends, and the drama the ensures was something I devoured in a single day. It ends in just the right way while also having you anticipating more to come – it is a standalone but I want more of this world.
This book is wonderful and spicy. I cannot wait to see where this author goes…but I hope she writes more Omegaverse because I am hooked!

In an effort to get her matchmaking Gran off her back, Mackenzie lies about dating a coworker. The only problem is the coworker is beyond grumpy and wouldnโt possibly help her out, right? Noah has a problem of his own and when Mackenzie brings him her fake dating proposal, he one ups her by asking her to be his fake mate. Thereโs no way they will catch feelings until thatโs exactly what these opposites doโฆ
โขMy Thoughtsโข
This was cute! I love fake dating so I was predisposed to enjoy this one, throw in wolf shifters and grumpy/shine and it was a safe bet that I would enjoy it. This was my first omegaverse book and it was fun. Iโll admit Iโve been super curious about all the things that make a book a part of the omegaverse world and some things I absolutely enjoyed (scenting, marking, mates). Some things I didnโt need but still overall an enjoyable experience. I did wish there had been more with the actual wolf shifting aspect, it was an extremely minor part of the book. I enjoyed our main characters and their bantery dynamic. Noah was a grumpy lost puppy and while I would have liked it if he was a bit more alpha-y in regular life, he was still adorable and had some swoony moments. I loved Mackenzieโs snarky sense of humor and how she loved baiting/teasing stoic Noah. I enjoyed watching both characters grow both as a couple and as individuals. I felt like plot held its own even though the spice was a big part of the storyline. Definitely a good time and Iโd even venture that itโs a great book for the omegaverse curious/beginners!
